Baroness Von Sketch Show (2016–2021)
2/10
Commits the biggest sin in comedy - not being actually funny. 1 single spoiler ahead
24 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the whole first season while doing some home repairs. My eyes were not always on the screen, but I did not miss a single joke. Six episodes of 21 minutes. There must've been 5 minutes of top quality jokes, but the rest is a barrel of water lightly flavored with half a cube of "joke" stock.

The jokes were not good. Not that they were bad. It's just not good enough to write a show around them. These jokes are filler jokes used in great comedies that don't want to have a scene without a joke. Light puns, little misunderstandings, etc.

Spoiler: For example, there's a bit about a lesbian couple taking their cat to a vet. When the vet asks if there's any problems the vet needs to know about. The owner says "intimacy, communication, trust, the usual." Then the other owner says "She meant the cat, not us." Funny? Like it or not, it'll be the same joke for the whole scene. "She's withdrawn" "I am an introvert!" "I meant the cat! " - this time, they owners switch roles, one talking about the cat, the other confused.

The vet asks if there's any changes to the diet and this time both partners assume the vet is talking about them, not the cat, and answer "we're gluten free." "I was asking about the cat." "Well, the cat too."

"Any drinking problems?" And one of the owners talks about her own drinking problems. This "misunderstanding" continues with every question, as the show tries to feed an entire village with this one bit of joke.

This scene closes with the owners asking "doc, what's next? (for the cat)" and the vet confuses the question to "what's next in your life?" as the vet starts talking about her life goals, career change, settling down, "plant some roots... see if we can make a baby." "Study French? Go to the moon" The vet's "what's next" speech lasts 20 seconds. The whole thing lasts 1 minute 46 seconds and there's just one single joke in there - who is the subject of the question - repeated over and over and over and stretched to fill the minutes.

It feels like filler material, unused scenes from films that are in the extra section of a DVD, not the main thing.

Every scene is like that - with one joke made into a scene, rather than a scene consisting of multiple jokes. Good comedy shows cut jokes out, bad ones stretch them and repeat them.

What doesn't help the show is the fact that it's a sketch show rather than a sit-com. So there's no personalities, no bigger arcs, no build up, set up and pay off. It goes for quick one-liners, puns and chuckles rather than hilarity.

2/10 for the effort.
