An enjoyable French series that delivers action and laughs

Vincent Libérati is a terminally ill secret service agent who has returned to Marseilles to be near his teenaged daughter. Here he is offered a radical treatment that could extend his life; there is of course a catch… if he wants to be treated he will have to work for Hydra; an ultra-secret government agency that operates outside the law. Things are made more complicated as he tries to keep this work secret from his family, especially he sister, Juliette, who is a senior police officer and inevitable ends up investigating the same cases from the other side of the law. If this wasn't enough his daughter, Lola, starts living with him and sometimes gets caught up in events. Over the course of the three seasons a number of cases are undertaken; some lasting a couple of episodes, others lasting somewhat longer; the second season is devoted to the investigation of one villain.

This series was a lot of fun; each episode contained a decent amount of action and a good number of laughs. These laughs aren't a distraction as they are provided by the situation and characters rather than unnecessary goofiness. The cast does a fine job; Vincent Elbaz is great as Vincent Libérati, he can do the action, the family scenes and the more humorous moments equally well. Anne Girouard is just as good as his sister; making her character just as important as Vincent. The rest of the cast are good too; most notably Damien Jouillerot, who plays Tony a small time crook saved by Vincent who ends up working for him and providing plenty of laughs, and Sarah Brannens who plays his daughter who somehow manages to get caught up in the trouble fairly often while also having the usual teenage concerns. The action is impressive and varied. The ending is a bit downbeat as it was clearly intended to be a bit of a cliff hanger prior to the sadly cancelled fourth season. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to anybody who enjoys a blend of action and amusement and doesn't mind the unlikely coincidences.

These comments are based on watching the series in French with English subtitles.
