Review of The Five

The Five (2016)
6/10
Frustrating and not worth watching

So the idea behind the story is a good one, a young boy, Jesse, has gone missing and 20 years later his DNA is found at a crime scene. My original review after watching 8 episodes was pretty scathing. There are still some massive plot holes and just ridiculous notions. The only episodes I enjoyed were 1, 9 and 10. The characters have gone on the most ridiculous escapades in the other episodes which have very little to do with the end result - finding Jesse. The copper Danny would NEVER be allowed to lead the case since he was a childhood friend when Jesse disappeared. Even after he tells everyone everything about the investigation he isn't pulled off the case and sacked for gross misconduct. Slade gets things done but his whole side story it completely irrelevant. Mark, the brother, wants to be the hero in every situation but doesn't ever seem to get much done. The female lead Pru is the most irritating of all, somehow being the worst mother and wife and yet everyone pawns over her.

*Since watching the completion* So, we do actually find out what happened to Jesse and it actually was a pretty good twist. I didn't see it coming and I enjoyed it. All in all this had the potential to be a really really good show, it could have been great as 2 or 3 episodes. A lot of what the characters get up to is absolutely pointless to the over arcing story. *SPOILERS AHEAD* They get involved in a scam ring, kidnapping, get away with murder (which everyone seems to have brushed off), lie to the police, break in to many homes and it's all pretty pointless. Unfortunately you have to watch all 10 episodes for everything to make complete sense but I think the ending is quite good. (Although everyone gets over 20 years of heartache within about 5 minutes). Originally rated 2 stars but probably give it a 6 now.
