Warning: Spoilers
. . . "break a leg" really works. When "Johnny Allison" is a civilian medical intern, his continual sexual harassment of nurse "Paula Ryan" gets him nowhere, forcing Johnny to make crude passes at all the other nurses working at his training hospital. Before Johnny can get to even first base with Paula, WWII breaks out. As luck would have it, Johnny is sent to San Antonio's Fort Sam Houston for training as a battlefield medic. The now-Lt. Ryan already is stationed there, opening her up for Johnny's renewed onslaught of unwanted attentions, no matter how court-martial worthy they are. Inexplicably given the plum task of chauffeuring a colonel around, Johnny commandeers the Army staff car, kidnaps Paula, and drives her over to the Alamo. Finding no Lovers' Lane there, Johnny returns to base in the high dungeon of C-Block. Rubbing salt in his wounds, Johnny endures hours of potato peeling on K.P. duty. However, given a break from the kitchen, this habitual screw-up breaks a leg in a spectacular tumble down a hillside. An officer has a bedside chat with the hospitalized Ne'Er-Do-Well, who promises to turn over a new leaflet. The story immediately cuts to graduation day at Fort Sam. Johnny is shown with a crutch under one arm and an overjoyed Paula under his other.
