Being the first does not mean being great
26 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is French animator Émile Cohl's first film from 2008 and only runs for slightly over a minute. And even if he was already 50 when this was made, he did more than 200 films afterward. And what's even more impressive is that he made these in roughly 10 years only. You can add him to the list of famous French filmmakers of the early days that includes Georges Méliès, Segundo de Chomón and others. His work here, however, is not that memorable really. It's incredibly fast so you have to be well-aware and concentrated and you will still miss some parts I guess. The humour here is based on giant hats, elephants and horses. It is in black-and-white obviously and widely considered the first animated film ever made. In any case, being first does not mean being great. This is a fairly underwhelming short film, not really funny although it is obviously the comedy genre. Recommended only for huge film buffs of the very old days.
