Review of Somboon

The documentary is simply mind blowing, and this is coming from somebody who watches documentaries every week. The fact that this is a love story about an elderly couple going through the most challenging adversities in health and sickness, together with environmental issues, really spells out the real nature of true love and the sacrifices a spouse makes without even thinking of it as a sacrifice. The simple, grounded and surreal moments in the film progressively become less and less surreal and ultimately more real as the events unfold until the epiphany when the viewer's expectations are finally realised, but the unsettling and heart tugging final 30 minute climax of this film is a thrill, but only because as a viewer you do not want the inevitable to occur. The film is pure genius romance and quite possibly the best documentary I've seen this year. 8/10
