One twist thriller
15 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This has an interesting premise, but in busying itself with the heroine's past the story dishes up a cast of unconvincing characters.

I won't go into much detail, but I think the time periods involved were poorly judged. Ten years since the attack, four since the divorce - it just made me wonder how the mystery could be concealed for so long, which led to practical questions that threw doubt on the credibility of the action.

Firth is excellent at doing angry, but I have no idea why such a man would care for this woman for so long. The obvious answer is possessiveness, but that's not satisfying.

Halfway through I thought they must introduce some criminal element, maybe even espionage - but it really is just a straight story about an abusive relationship between two people. With one twist.

The friend Claire was a weak red herring/exposition machine, which is what I'd expect in a cheesy horror. But then we did get cheesy horror in the final conflict - he pins her to the ground, the heroine reaches desperately for anything, any weapon ... and whacks him over the head with a handy iron. Zzzzz.

The final scene was for the birds. No further comment.
