Review of Holy Motors

Holy Motors (2012)

Does the Mona Lisa have a plot?
19 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
There is something about this film I don't understand: why does it elicit sheer hatred from a large part of the population?

I mean, what do you expect from a Leos Carax movie? A-Z plotting? Dialogue worthy of the Epstein brothers?

Where is it written that a work of art must have a coherent narrative? What is the plot of the Mona Lisa? Or of Warhol's soup cans, or Pollock's drip paintings? For that matter, what is the plot of Mr. Hulot's Holiday? Or Playtime?

Let me suggest a plot if you need one. Holy Motors is about a man having a dream about an Everyman. That wasn't so hard, was it? Just took a bit of thought.

Look, I don't fall for every art film I see. I despised Antichrist. I love Carl Dreyer, but Bresson bores me to tears. And I hated Carax's Boy Meets Girl.

But I like this movie. There are great visuals, a set of great performances by Denis Lavant, and the glorious opportunity to think about a film when it's finished. Rare these days, very rare. (That's from Rules of the Game, by the way.)

Just don't ask me to sit through Boy Meets Girl again.
