Deep Throat (1972)
4/10
Any good deep reasons to continue to watch the movie, Deep Throat: not really! It's not even that sexy. This movie hasn't aged well.

Warning: Spoilers
Compare to modern day, porn, this movie is pretty much a time capsule of what 1970's thought what was sexy. For somebody who lived the 1970's, this movie might serve as a nostalgia erotica, but for me, the movie is just outdated gross looking. How deep is Deep Throat? Not that deep. It doesn't really have much of a story arch. It's just stupid point A to point B plot of having a good reason to show people having intercourse with each other. The only reason why it has a plot is because porno filmmakers had to provide a story to frame the depiction of sexual activity so as not to run afoul against the United States Supreme Court decision on showing pornographic at theaters at the time. Having narrative elements help the movie from not getting banned, nationwide. Now, these days, sexuality is more in the open, so there isn't so many laws against it, as it was during those days. Since porno flicks is a computer click away, most of these modern pornos will have little to no story. This movie plot is really dumb down, to the simple minded question; how far does the girl have to go to untangle her tingle? Directed by Gerard Damiano AKA Jerry Gerard, the movie is about a sexually frustrated woman, Linda Susan Boreman AKA Lovelace, credit as herself in the film whom looking for advice on how to achieve a great orgasm. After a sex party with her friend Helen (Dolly Sharp) provide no help, Helen recommends that Linda visit a doctor (Harry Reems) whom discovers that Linda has a special talent for giving oral sex. The rest of the movie is her taking a job as his therapist looking for the right man for the job to service her. While the plot is pretty stupid, but I give credit where credit due, because Deep Throat is one of the first pornographic films to feature a plot, character development and relatively high production standards that help usher the era known as 'Porno Chic'. Filmmakers were pushing the envelope of what is publicly acceptable. Porno did help the sexual revolution with its libertarian themes. This movie did push buttons on sexual fetishism arousal by having scenes of pubic hair shaving and drinking female discharges with cola coca. I didn't find those scenes attractive, one bit. I was kinda turn off by Linda Lovelace. It wasn't that, she wasn't attractive looking; she was just alright in the looks department. I found Carol Connors, the best looking from the cast. It's the fact that I know, she was probably forced to do the stuff in the film against her will. She was probably raped, threat and beat by her then boyfriend Chuck Traynor. It seem like it did happen, and that would explain a lot of the bruising on her body in the film. Just the idea of watching forced prostitution is a turn off by me. Then there is the idea that Linda Lovelace was a mess up person, who never took responsibility of her own actions, blaming her problems on porn until her death in 2002. She doesn't seem trustworthy, because she was such a hypocrisy person. She serve in her later years as a reform anti-pornographic activism, but despite that. She did a number of raunchy photo shoots. Just watching it in the 21th century seem mess up. It's like watching your parents or grandparents have sex. There are better modern pornos to get your kicks off. Most of its actors performing sex in this movie, are now dead. It's disturbing watching two once alive, dead people having sex. It seems to be a bit taboo as necrophilia. Deep Throat was a subject of obscenity trials around the country, with stars like Reems being convicted of violating federal obscenity charges dealing with transporting pornographic material across state lines. It was overturned. The movie also cause protest from Christian, and feminism groups asking for a ban of the flick. Although it was banned in 23 states, Deep Throat made a lot of money, but most of it, went to the Colombo mob that financed the production. A lot of criminal money launderings went through back then. Another reason why I hate the film. While this movie really became mainstream in the 1970s. From an artistic point of view, it's one of the worst movies ever made. Acting and dialogue are silly and terrible. The story is supposed to be a comedy, so it was much more tongue in cheek, so to speak, but the jokes were pretty unfunny. The music playing the background was as a drug trip, as you can hear the bong smoking every minute. It's kinda annoying. The film opens with an instrumental track that echoes the hook of the 1968 easy listening hit, "Do You Know the Way to San Jose". Despite the movie settling is mostly just Miami & NYC. There is a number of sequels, documentaries and remakes over the years that are pretty awful. The movie influence will forever be more famous due to the name given to the source in the "Washington Post" investigation of the Watergate scandal that brought down a president. In the end, I think that Deep Throat should be more famous than this turd. This movie isn't good, then and it isn't good now.
