The new show from creator Nahnatchka Khan titled "Don't Trust the B**** in Apt. 23″ is one of the more pleasant sitcoms to hit this season. Very reminiscent of FOX's hit show "New Girl" and CBS' "2 Broke Girls," this comedy tells the story of Chloe (Krysten Ritter), a New York City party girl with an interesting view and zest for life, who continues to make trouble and misery for her naive, small town roommate June (Dreama Walker). Exemplifying a unique approach to the twenty-something-girl-comedy, the show continues to show some promise as we trek through the first episodes. June, though obviously inexperienced, is showing signs of acute, cleverness as she finds the balance in her newly found single life and job at a coffee shop. Walker's natural demeanor is effortless as she delivers some of the show's biggest chuckles. However, June can be at times abrasive and ear screeching as she follows the events set by the writing team. When it comes to Chloe, a definite borderline sociopath, Ritter portrays her demon-like demeanor with finesse and sensitivity. Ritter is hilarious, tender, and incredibly talented. Her interpretation of Chloe could easily be a throw away however, Ritter finds the epicenter of comicality and showcases some great moments throughout the 22 minute program. A foreseen future concern is the talented writing team have left little wiggle room to go in terms of a dynamic and creative story arch. In these first few episodes, we see June being tormented constantly by Chloe like proving her boyfriend is a cheater and co-adopting a teenager without her permission. It's hard to believe a real life situation like this, going on forever. While the two leads are talented, supporting players James Van Der Beer, who plays himself, and Liza Lapira, as the obsessed and neurotic neighbor Robin, pull together some incredibly funny moments. Van Der Beek is quite successful in comedy and as we naturally have his character from his hit show, "Dawson's Creek" coming up a bit, Van Der Beek, the character actor, is a terrific role for him to sink his teeth into. He's probably the best thing about this ABC comedy. Lapira is a whole other bunch of bananas. Lapira, who has been seen in films like "21," "Crazy, Stupid, Love," and "Cloverfield" is the most jocular and hysterical performer on the show. In her brief moments, Lapira manages to outwit and completely steal camera time from her co-stars. With more authentic and available character interpretations, Lapira can be one of the best things on small and big screen. Creator Nahnatchka Khan has had her hand in some successful programs over the years. She was nominated as a producer for "American Dad" by the Emmy Awards in 2009 and with her hand in writing and producing, Khan will likely see this baby to the finish line or cancellation. The former is feasible with more attention to character and witty detail. I believe "Don't Trust the B**** in Apt. 23″ to be a solid, successful sitcom, capable of of artistic greatness.
