Review of Bart Simpson: Do the Bartman

This animated one hit wonder was born of the (thankfully)brief period when Bart was in his "underachiever and proud of it" obnoxious cool brat persona, and was generally considered to be the main character of the show - before everyone came to their senses and realised that the true star was not Bart, but rather Homer! It may have long overstayed its welcome, but whether you now hate or like what the Simpsons has become, I think or I hope, that one thing that all fans can agree on is that Homer is the one thing about it that never stopped being great. The animation is fairly well done. I remember it as having that ugly and slightly disturbing look that most of the first and second seasons had. There's a surprising variety of characters on display. It was kind of amusing trying to spot them all. It has end credits, just like a real episode. If, for whatever reason, anyone really likes this, there's a director's cut on the season 2 DVD. Nancy Cartwright's "rapping" is actually pretty good! Michael Jackson is mentioned once. I can't believe this was number one in my country for three whole weeks! I mean it's kind of catchy & all, but come on! It's not so much the singing that I find corny, so much the dancing! Ew!!! This type of thing is such an embarrassing little chapter in the show's history. I'm so glad it soon moved away from this kind of childish nonsense. It's just horrible, and only ever really intended for the little kiddies, something I don't believe the show ever completely was. In a sweet moment of hilarity in an otherwise dreck episode made seven years later, the show itself poked fun at this ridiculous musical moment of the past. Bart, on the school bus and desperate for attention, sings a bit of the song. Ralph Wiggum, uncharacteristically normal for once, comments:"that is so 1991". Amen, Ralphie.. See ya!
