Soul Surfer (2011)
4/10
Sure it's inspirational, but is it watchable?

Warning: Spoilers
I honestly couldn't even finish the movie because by the more than halfway mark I didn't care anymore. And I usually always finish my movies.

I'm not heartless, I have a heart enough for the REAL Bethany Hamilton. It is an inspirational story, sure. There were however, many things about this movie bothered me, and I think maybe it was because I'm too old for it. It's no surprise that Sean McNamara, the producer of the film, did nothing but Disney Channel TV shows prior, and it certainly shows. For a movie being in Hawaii, and watching it with someone who spent his entire childhood in Hawaii, the lack of Asians and the way the family was portrayed in the movie, took us out of it. The family was just a little too jolly for the first part of the movie. And please, movie makers, when the dark haired girl is the protagonist, I have to roll my eyes. Aren't we past this?! And they catch the shark that took her arm, REALLY? What is that going to prove?!

As far as the actors go, the best ones had to be the parents, Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid. Both great actors. Ann Sophia Robb, wasn't great, and borderline bad at time. Though I think the worst actor had to be Carrie Underwood...just. ugh.

It's a children's movie. And I can enjoy my share of children's movies! I was just so disappointed in this movie...it's not at all what the hype surrounding it makes it out to be.
