The sad thing is that the story behind this film would make a better film

The State of Things was a satisfying experience and way better than the other Wim Wenders movie I have seen (The Scarlet Letter). It made me feel a lot like when I watched Fellini's 8 1/2: both are films about directors unable to make their movies and both movies end up, in my opinion, losing points for having too much fat (read: irrelevance scenes).

But while Fellini's movie has the excuse of lingering because the director's mind itself wanders, W. Wenders' film finally starts to pick up at its last third. This is when the director goes to L.A. and we never see what happened to the film crew again. Thus, there is no pay-off after making all the scenes about their philosophical thoughts. It's like spending one entire day baking a cake and the throwing it in the toilet.

But other than that, the film is quite good. It works on many levels of irony and you can clearly see Wenders was fully aware of them all: the biggest one being the apparent lack of story in the film. I loved the music too.

In short, while the movie itself didn't really appealed to me, I became very interested in its director and I plan to watch more of his work.
