Review of Awaydays

Awaydays (2009)
4/10
Boring

Having just watched this I felt it worth commenting on as it was a real waste of time.

The characters are lifeless and dull and the movie plays like a mish mash of "stuff that happened" rather than any kind of interesting story.

The guy who played Elvis did a pretty good job (despite the frankly bizarre sixties montage scenes of him in front of a starry wall) but other than that it's hard to recall anything memorable or enjoyable about this movie.

I guess it captured a certain feel in its portrayal of a specific time and place but some of the drawn out, artsy scenes "staring out to sea" and so forth really are like watching paint dry.

This film basically reminds me of being sat down and having to listen to some guy waffling out about his heyday with his mates up north. Each little mini story or unrelated anecdote being rolled out carrying little or no interest to someone who wasn't actually there. (Followed by the obligatory, "...but it was all futile and I'm glad I got out of all that, etc etc" summary.)

What a dull piece of cinema this was. I would recommend seeing "this is England" instead, which does a much better job all round.
