964 Pinocchio (1991)

Visually Interesting But Often Tedious Cyber-Punk Film...

Warning: Spoilers
Cyber-punk films aren't one of my strong suits when it comes to films. I've only seen a handful and most of them I've enjoyed to some degree on another, but I typically need to be in a certain mind-frame to view them, which is rare - so that's why I can only comment on the few that I've seen. 964 PINOCCHIO is probably my least favorite of the several that I've seen, as although there are some decent visuals on-hand, the film itself is just overly bizarre and pointless - even by cyber-punk film standards.

Pinocchio is a sex-cyborg that is thrown out on the street by his unsatisfied owner. He is befriended by a homeless girl named Himiko who takes him in to live with her in her squatter's digs. Things go extremely downhill when Pinocchio's creators find out about his irresponsible discarding and decide to hunt him down. On top of this, Himiko goes through a strange transformation of her own, and begins to treat Pinocchio like a slave. Pinocchio eventually escapes from both his creator's and Himiko's clutches, but returns to th factory that he was made to elicit the help of those that originally made him...or something like that...

Honestly, the storyline above sounds pretty straight-forward, and in some instances it is - but the last few minutes of the film REALLY go into bizarro territory and pretty much make everything that you've watched prior to those last scenes pointless. Personally, of the cyber-punk films I've seen, I prefer TETSUO (the "grandfather" of the cyber-punk movement), MEATBALL MACHINE, and the Russian film NAILS - I feel that those films are superior to 964 PINOCCHIO in pretty much every way. If you're a big cyber-punk fan, you'll probably dig this one - if not, I wouldn't really recommend it...6/10
