This film TRIES very hard to be a screwball comedy,...but it doesn't quite make it

Warning: Spoilers
There are some things to like about this middling effort starring George Brent and Ann Sheridan. At times, the dialog is crisp and witty and the stars are pretty likable people in their films, so I would have expected a little more from this film. Unfortunately, I think the biggest shortcoming was the writing. While at times it showed some brilliance, at other times it just seemed uninspired and the characters behaved bizarrely to say the least.

Brent plays a successful author on a book tour. The women seem to like him A LOT, but at the same time he appears ready to marry Sheridan and settle down,...that is until a woman who briefly dated him years ago returns. Then, rather inexplicably, Brent behaves oddly and never gets around to telling this old flame to get lost--leaving Sheridan out in the cold. To me, all this just didn't make sense, as Sheridan was prettier, nicer and not a bubble-headed idiot like the other lady. Again and again, Brent could just say goodbye, but doesn't--and it seems the only reason he doesn't is to pad out this film.

Apart from the poor plot, there are some wonderful moments as well. The restaurant scene, though perhaps overdone, is still quite funny. I also LOVED the lawyers towards the end of the film!! Their chasing after him to offer their services was terribly funny and was a great commentary about the profession--but these two scenes just weren't enough to elevate this film above mediocrity. I usually enjoy Brent and Sheridan, but this film just didn't seem very inspired or interesting.
