Dark but fascinating
8 May 2006
I found Of Human Bondage a very memorable, fascinating but dark (perhaps due to the horrible quality of the DVD - this problem MUST be fixed. The DVD I bought was terrible quality and I urge Criterion to weave its magic on it!) movie. Of Human Bondage may seem dated to some, but the concept of being head over heels with someone (who, more often than not, does not love you back) will always be relevant as it is human nature.

Bette Davis is in her element as the worthless tea waitress who Leslie Howard's character falls for (who knows why? But he is infatuated with her). She makes very attempt to put him down, to shove him away and yet he still loves her and does anything for her. Personally I found this quite frustrating but I can understand it because the acting was very good - especially by Davis who is as always wonderful as ever. Her accent was pretty good but I felt she was pushing it a little bit too much at times.

A little dated in some ways but Bette Davis in top form. Good film - recommended to everyone.
