Base, cruel, twisted exploitation
15 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Clearly director/writer James Wood's celluloid love child, it is one of the most base, uneven, cruel, twisted exploitation films I've seen. It's certainly not great, but it isn't boring, either, and wallows in incest, random violence, racism and rape. Wood's performance as Dr. Jekyll is completely over the top, as is his crazy script which tries to rationalize the most hideous treatment of other human beings. The scenes of people engaging in brutal, bloody kung fu bouts in Jekyll's low rent dungeon are more comical than disturbing and they're not well choreographed. The atmosphere, however, is thick with brain damaged notions and the incest angle sticks around like a fart that won't die.
