Casanova (2005)
7/10
A delightful romp!
14 February 2006
A glorious and entertaining romp in the manner of a Shakespearean comedy or Mozart light opera, full of mistaken identity, lovable characters, gorgeous scenes of Venice and a delightful baroque soundtrack. Casanova focuses on a specific conquest, that of a beautiful woman whose intelligence surpasses that of most men in the government, has fencing skills to outmatch the best, and turns out to be the one that Casanova has to submit to, heart and soul. This film is awash with the most gorgeous colour, matches wit with action in a finely balanced and sparkling script that never seems to flag, and courageous performances whose reach is within their grasp. There is no deep meaning to Casanova, just excellent entertainment.
