Roll Bounce (2005)
7/10
harmless fun
31 December 2005
Another period piece set in the 70's, with Bow Wow taking his coordinated skating posse to the Northside Sweet Lands skating rink when the ghetto rink closes. There they butt heads with the powers that be, and you know it'll only be solved with a skate-off. But this isn't lazy standard Hollywood fare. Lee is a smooth director and I was often noticing little things he did to shoot a standard genre scene in a new way. Sure, there are several drawn-out Bow-Wow-reaching-as-an-actor bits that I might fast-forward through on subsequent viewings, but the wife was moved by them, so to their own. Soundtrack is fabulous and deserves to be heard loud. Supporting cast is fine, with me asking why Epps and Murphy aren't given more work, as they steal most every scene they have.
