Dark and atmospheric, it's a chilling tale of one mans descent into madness that is not to be missed!

'The Assassination of Richard Nixon' is a story about ones mans descent into madness, as he tries to right societies wrongs and ultimately be remembered. It is a story that is very similar to that of Martin Scorsese's 'Taxi Driver', even the main character has a strong resemblance to 'Taxi Drivers' Travis Bickle, however it is still a very different film that doesn't fail to distinguish itself from its influence. The way Sam breaks down is very bold and visible throughout, and where as Bickle seemed to be a very psychotic character, Sam just seems to be depressed. He blames the government for everything that has happened to him, losing his family, his job, not getting his loan, and finally being disowned by his brother. He blames the government and Nixon, and decides to take matters into his own hands. The thing that really makes the film is the awkward and uneasy dialogue of Sean Penn's character, which is nothing short of pure brilliance. The pace at which the film breaks down is another great achievement, you have a perfect understanding of what's going on in his head and it isn't long before you start to become concerned for him and finally scared of him. Niels Mueller couldn't have done a better job directing, it's incredibly atmospheric, which makes this one of the greatest debuts in all of cinema history. The acting is stunning throughout and the soundtrack is one of the best in recent years. Its isn't as powerful or engrossing as 'Taxi Driver' and I doubt it will have as big an impact, but what it has done is launched Niels Mueller's career and introduced the world to one hell of a talented director. It may not be to everyone's tastes, as its rating will suggest, but if you're a fan of 'Taxi Driver' and have been looking for something with a similar plot and style then this is defiantly for you.
