Tiger Warsaw (1988)

Avoid if into Horror, fighting genres etc - WATCH - if you have a sensitive side, and want to enjoy a refreshing story/film, with a brilliant performance by Swayze...

Warning: Spoilers
I kept seeing this film in my local video shop and was never sure what to make of it. So, i never bothered until the other day (Feb 2005) I went down to my local video shop 'Global Videos' (A National video shop-UK)and found myself a copy on DVD (They only had 4 copies left) I like Patrick Swayze - and feel hes under-rated as an actor. I bought the DVD mainly out of curiosity and the fact it was only £3 (Pounds sterling) (Just under 6 American Dollars i think!) ANYWAY!THE FILM! Patrick Swayze (who appears to of done 1-2 films, every year (til 1997 when he took some time out) straight from doing the Hit film 'Dirty Dancing' and a classic for me - 'Steel Dawn' in 1987 comes his first film of '88 'Tiger Warsaw' Some say this was a complete change of the typical role Swayze normally portrays-but i have to disagree. Just like the two films mentioned above-Swayze takes on a character that appears to be hard on the outside - but sensitive, and caring on the inside. (Johnny in Dirty D was this cool, rough around the edges dancer-until Baby reveals the 'real' Johnny - same with 'Steel Dawn' Nomad was a warrior a soldier, hardened by the war. Lost everything he cared about and loved - a fighter. Until he makes it his mission to play peace keeper and protect the farm)

In 'Tiger' the hardened, 'bad boy' side to swayze's character happens mainly 15 years prior to the present day in the film. 'Chuck 'Tiger' Warsaw' was a 'bad boy' (a bad seed as he is called in the film) and everybody knows it. He was into drink and drugs - and stealing. Without revealing the plot too much- 'Tiger' does something bad involving his own family and leaves town. During the first few years he dives into drugs and booze even worse than before until finally he goes into Rehab. During the 15 years since he left town, his family have tried hard to forget him and get on with their lives. Even tried to convince themselves 'Tiger' was dead. Fresh out of re-hab-'Tiger' returns to the town he ran away from 15 years ago. In the vein attempt to get his life back and sort it out with not only his friends but his family. Drug free - and t-total. However 15 years is a long time. Can he ever be forgiven for what he did before skipping town? After all- everyone he loved would rather him be dead. This film is outdated- i admit. But the emotions are still there. Even 17 years on - there will still be people that can still relate to this film. It might not have quite the same impact as it could of back then (as we live in a hardened world) But this doesn't stop us from feeling for the characters (Especially 'Tiger') who long for love, forgiveness and to take everything back to before the events of 15 years ago. Swayze does really well in the portrayal of 'Tiger', and proves to us how deep his acting skills really are. This film wont win any 'Best film of the century awards' but if you enjoy all FILMS (not just pacific genres eg.Horror, fighting, action etc.) you will appreciate this. Its refreshing, NOT a chick flick, just a film about real events that happen in the real world-emotions, family, love, pain, anger even lads with a sensitive side can enjoy this film.

NOT for the action/horror etc lover - but for those with a sensitive side, and enjoy a refreshing true-to-life story. It can tug at your heart strings if you let it - especially if you've experienced similar things in your own life. (Family break-ups etc)

AVOID if you don't understand the appeal of sensitive storys and films. GIVE IT A GO- If you want a refreshing story/film in comparison to modern films, and if you enjoy sincere performances by Patrick Swayze.

Its cheap enough to get a copy on DVD -why don't you give it a try. Make your own mind-just as i did. I personally enjoyed it-and feel an updated-modern approach/remake to the same story- would do well. (Keep Patrick in it though!)
