Strange Relations (2001 TV Movie)
Mixed feelings... (Possible Spoilers)
26 January 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This film's video title STRANGE RELATIONS just kind of screams out the theme "dysfunctional family comedy", but sadly this film is not what I was hoping for. It is eerily similar to the theatrically released MARVIN'S ROOM as both involve the disease leukeamia. The acting is decent enough, but the plot doesn't know what to do with itself.

I wanted a nice comedy/drama about a family and all of the many mishaps that happen to them. Well, that is only half of STRANGE RELATIONS. The film is more about 'mother finds long-lost son'. This was okay. I could still handle it, but it was still a little agitating to me.

The film has a good 'feel-good' sense to it, but that only lasts for a short while. A lot of things made sense, but they were not the things I was hoping for. The film dragged out towards the end and I was just hoping for the thing to end. I like good family satires like THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS and PASSED AWAY which were both good (and also the deftly familiar MARVIN'S ROOM). The film has a plot that is left-over from MARVIN'S ROOM but is actually handled a little bit better. I didn't like the whole romance story that was somehow fitted into the bulk of the script and this caused me to lose interest at some parts. I didn't want a romance movie nor did I want just a stupid "mother reunites with son" movie but a feel-good happy comedy/drama about the true meaning of family. But, again, that is only part of the film that makes up STRANGE RELATIONS. Still, not bad for a television movie.

STRANGE RELATIONS gets 3/5.
