Kinnear is right on as Crane
16 November 2002
I was really glad that Paul Schrader was the one that directed this film because sex is what ruined Bob Crane and a no holes barred approach is what is needed if your going to accurately portray Crane's sordid life. This just could not have been made by the Lifetime Network and still have the impact. Greg Kinnear is perfect as the so called normal guy with the innocent smile. Kinnear has that type of persona so he's extremely well cast and what I thought was interesting was how he conveys Crane as a sex addict who absolutely does not think that what he is doing is wrong. Willem Dafoe is also excellent as his buddy John Carpenter (Not the filmmaker). Fascinating to watch Crane allow sex to totally consume him and wreck not only his career but two marriages as well. I don't think its a great film, we really don't see anything that we didn't know already and of course we don't know who murders him in the end which leaves the ending a little inconclusive. But it's very well made and I wouldn't be surprised if Kinnear and Dafoe both pick up Oscar nominations.
