I have to agree with those who have posted negative reviews of this flick (notice that the most recent reviews are all positive, while the older ones are by and large negative. I think the studio may have got some hacks to post here in anticipation of a U.S. release). This movie was a complete mess! Don't get sucked in my the eerie opening. Like someone else here, I found this movie while trying to download Elf. The opening really grabbed me, but from there on in the movie was a complete let down. The dialogue was awful, the passing morbid (no pun intended), the acting (especially of the dad) was less than thrilling.
This movie borrows HEAVILY from so many better movies. You'll see pieces of The Others, The Shining, Amityville etc. etc.
The gaping holes in the plot has been adequately pointed out by others so let me talk about some that no one else seemed to have ouch on. One of the things that troubled me the most about this movie was the ending!! Not only does it seem to end without and ending, but it also breaks the rules the movie first establishes, namely, that these ghost only appear in darkness. SPOILER: How then does the double of Reg's boyfriend pick her and her brother up? Secondly, how does this ghost (or whatever demon he's suppose to be) find a VW Beetle, identical to her boyfriend's??? Do these creatures have the power to manipulate time and space? Or did it create a duplicate VW?? [note the product placement with all the VWs and Audis as well] What was with Reggie's swimming in the earlier part of the movie? Was that just a gratuitous attempt to keep the men interested?! (Ok, that kinda worked) ;)
Why the HELL didn't the grown son say to someone: Listen there are these freaking monsters that are kicking my ass every night and that's how I'm getting these bruises!! I HATE it when characters behave in a way purely to serve the plot, but is totally inconsistent with how actual people would really behave!!!
In sum... stay away from this movie!! 3/10
