Almost Famous (2000)
Restored my faith in coming of age films
23 March 2002
I avoided seeing Almost Famous for almost a year. I didn't see it until this past January when I perused the video offerings and found that there were only a few titles that I still wanted to see and had not.

This was a wonderful film, highlighting the endearing relationship between a young boy and his overprotective mother. And rather than bashing the mom for her need to be involved with her son's life and ensuring that he doesn't do drugs or lose his virginity, the film is an awkward praise of moms who are not afraid of being good parents.

Kate Hudson was a complete surprise. She was so natural--in a Laura Linney sort of way--that you forget that this is a role. She is one of the band aids who falls in love with the lead man of Stillwater. When her guitar-playing lover rejects her and gambles her away in a poker game, we see her in her worst state of vulnerability. She tries to overdose and is rescued by William who finally realizes that the band's line of morality is shakey at best.

I cannot say enough good things about this film.
