Nice. Not revolutionary, but nice.

I really expected a whole lot of "movie magic" when seeing this film. I was looking forward to it ever since I heard Sophie Marceau, Calista Flockhart and Kevin Kline were playing. But after the movie, i was not exactly disappointed but not blown away as well. Why was this?

Well, I thought the "magic" part about Shakepeares Midsummer Nights Dream was not emphasized enough. I thought the focus was on the loving couples in the forest, and so I felt that characters like Puck or even Michelle Pfeiffers Titania somehow lost weight. Though Stanley Tucci did well in his performance, his Puck somehow did not seem "Puck" enough, which might be because of all the other Hollywood Superstars running around.

The transfer of the setting into 19th century Italy was certainly no big innovation. Except for bicycles and records, we did get no new ideas from Mister Hoffmann.

But the movie was still entertaining (due to the fantastic original version) and hilarious. Calista Flockhart did great mimic work, and Kline was wonderful especially in the final sequence. A nice movie to watch, but missing the one final "kick".
