Rose Dugdale has the kind of life story where, if she didn’t happen to be a Marxist, it would feel tailor-made for a Hollywood film. The heiress of a millionaire English family, Dugdale was born into an easy life: finishing school, debutante balls, and a place in the rarefied halls of Oxford. But Dugdale rejected the wealth handed to her and, after an incident in which she attempted to steal 82,000 pounds worth of silverware and paintings from her parents’ estate, left England to become a member and leader in the Irish Republican Army, fighting to end British rule of Northern Ireland.
“Baltimore,” a new feature film starring Imogen Poots as Dugdale, occasionally jumps somewhat awkwardly through this woman’s path to radicalization, but the film, from writer, director, and editor duo Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, largely anchors itself on the nine-day sliver of time she’s most notorious for.

Pesci and Liotta in Goodfellas Goodfellas, 10pm, BBC2, Monday, May 29
Martin Scorsese's passion for filmmaking shows little sign of dwindling, with the 80-year-old's latest, Killers Of The Flower Moon, premiering in Cannes last week to critical acclaim. This classic from his back catalogue is adapted from the non-fiction work by Nicholas Pileggi and charts the rise and fall of two-bit wiseguy Henry Hill. It was Joe Pesci who took home the Oscar for his portrayal of Hill's loose cannon friend Tommy DeVito but this is ensemble work at its finest, with Ray Liotta perfectly cast as Hill alongside Robert De Niro as Jimmy Conway. Beyond the acting, the film thunders along at pace and features a soundtrack that's tough to beat.

Disney is taking over May with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5) and The Little Mermaid (May 26) taking over screens across the country. Right when the first trails off, the second takes its place. So, the smaller titles need all the help they can get to compete. As always, a memorable poster can pave the way.

The most recognizable image you can use to sell a film about Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer is The Girl with a Pearl Earring. Whether the Scarlett Johansson film or the countless memes (Pearl with a Girl Earring is a personal favorite), you don’t need to be well-versed in Renaissance art to know this masterpiece. The trick is therefore presenting it in a unique way.
For Close to Vermeer, the designers choose to simply take the title at its word. Wielding a magnifying glass, they bring us closer to this painting that we all know.

The Exhibition On Screen series has become known for its studies of individual artists’ work which situate key pieces of art in biographical context. Little is known, however, about the life of Johannes Vermeer, the son of an art dealer, who led a quiet existence in Delft in the mid 17th Century, and died penniless at the age of 43. Without letters, diaries or documents, this film takes a rather different approach, endeavouring to find out about the man through the medium of his paintings. It also explains, for newcomers to the subject, just why his work – though little-known during his lifetime or the following two centuries – is so important in the history of art.
It centres on an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam – the largest in history, featuring 28 of the artist’s 35 known works. The curators share their expertise in interviews which have been cut...

Director Jimmy Olsson is a Dn alum who has consistently impressed us with his shorts tackling a wide series of topics and his latest, Last Weekend with Jenny and John (Sista helgen med Jenny och John), sees him broaching the delicate bond between a father and his teenaged daughter. Olsson drew from his own experiences of fatherhood and, through an intuitive method of writing, managed to pull the whole script together in a day. Last Weekend with Jenny and John gently explores the ever changing relationship parents face as their children grow older with a subtle colour palette and a 4:3 ratio which draws us into the film’s more sensitive explorative scenes. Grounded in an everyday reality the story feels authentic and genuine, free from the over-saccharine or bitter tones which are often employed in such explorations of parenting. With Last Weekend with Jenny and John still on its festival run,...

When first we glimpse Magalie (Emilie Bierre) she's sitting on the bed with her back to us, a sheet drawn up across her chest, her face half turned. The ochre hues of the room tell us that it's not her own. Viewers old enough to remember the Seventies may note a resemblance to that decade's sleazy art photography. Something about the light, however, recalls the work of Johannes Vermeer, and she has the same enigmatic gaze as many of his young female subjects. Read one way, she is sullen, withdrawn; read another, she is on the brink of spitting fire.
Magalie lives in the sort of quiet little Quebecois town where nothing much ever happens, or if it does, everyone is careful to forget about it. One thing the townspeople are currently struggling to forget is the accident at the factory which claimed the life of her father. It's now up.

Another intriguing entry into Netflix's true-crime library, the docuseries This Is a Robbery takes a deep dive into one of the most baffling art heists in history. In 1990, two men disguised as Boston police officers broke into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole 13 pieces of art worth hundreds of millions of dollars. 30 years later, we have leads about the robbers, but we don't know very much about the art's whereabouts. Suffice to say, the stolen works have not been returned.
The missing pieces include some of the most valuable works in art history: Govaert Flinck's "Landscape with Obelisk," Rembrandt van Rijn's "Christ in the Storm on the Lake of Galilee," Édouard Manet's "Chez Tortoni," and Johannes Vermeer's "The Concert." Oddly, the robbers left behind expensive Titian and Michaelangelo works while going for more obscure and less valuable pieces such as a Shang dynasty vase and bronze-plated eagle.

Netflix's This Is a Robbery, a four-part true-crime documentary, follows the largest and most confounding art heist in history: the theft of 13 pieces at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Over St. Patrick's Day weekend in 1990, two men posed as Boston police officers and robbed the museum, taking $500 million worth of artwork. While many leads have come up over the years, none of them ever panned out in the museum's favor. The paintings' status remains a mystery, and recent theories have even tied the puzzling heist to the Boston Mafia. Let's break down the most crucial details of the case to paint a picture of what happened that night.
In the early hours of March 18, 1990, Richard Abath was working the night shift as a guard at the Gardner Museum. He saw two police officers on the security camera and buzzed them in against protocol. The men told him...

Body-swap horror comedy “Freaky” repeated as the winner of a seriously subdued U.S. box office with $1.2 million at 2,057 locations in North America during the Friday-Sunday weekend.
The Universal and Blumhouse Productions’ movie stars Vince Vaughn as a serial killer and Kathryn Newton as a low-profile high schooler who inadvertently switch bodies on Friday the 13th. “Freaky” has taken in $5.6 million in its first 10 days amid the reluctance of many moviegoers to return to multiplexes until a Covid-19 vaccine is available.
Universal noted Sunday that the theatrical box office continues to be impaired due to a notable reduction in the number of theaters in North America, as the domestic theatrical footprint has shrunk to roughly 2,800 open locations from 3,400 last weekend.
The performance of “Freaky” contrasts sharply with the same weekend a year ago when Disney launched “Frozen II” with $130 million and overall North American business totaled $206 million, according to Comscore.

If last week was a big one for Netflix (what with “Mank” and “Hillbilly Elegy” out in theaters), then this one belongs to Amazon, who have a pair of big projects launching via their Prime Video subscription service. The first is “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen’s anthology “Small Axe,” an epic and altogether unconventional series that doesn’t fit neatly into the “film” or “TV” categories: McQueen has made five features, all set in London’s immigrant West Indian community, dealing with aspects of cultural identify, racism and community. Of the three entries I’ve seen, this week’s entry, “Mangrove,” is the strongest — and a great way to kick off the cycle, with a courtroom drama for those who felt Netflix’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” didn’t give adequate time to Bobby Seale.

In MemoriamEver since the late eighties French filmmaker Jean-Claude Rousseau has been a name commonly attached to the most adventurous and difficult type of filmmaking. Far from the American, well-established niches of experimental film, he has been working sparsely in Europe (and Japan) for over thirty years becoming a sort of mythological, solitary figure for this continent’s avant-garde. His oeuvre, roughly divided into two periods—the Super 8mm period going from 1983 to 1995; and the video work, still ongoing since 2003—deals constantly with the most primary elements of cinema: composition, movement, trace, and light, as if in every single shot of his films he wanted to make us reconsider what we normally take for granted about these concepts. Nevertheless, much more interested in cinema’s ends than in its mediums, Rousseau’s extremely rigorous but romantic approach to art reminds us less of structuralist filmmakers such as Ernie Gehr or...

What will the moviegoing public make of a film called “Lyrebird”? Oblique but apt, that title refers to an ostentatious Australian bird capable of mimicking the calls of countless other species — the relevance of which may not be immediately apparent to those intrigued by the true, post-World War II story of a notorious Dutch art dealer accused of selling a priceless cultural treasure to Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Göring.
After being arrested and tried for collaborating with the enemy, Han van Meegeren mounted a most unconventional defense: He claimed that the artwork in question, “The Supper at Emmaus,” was not in fact a Johannes Vermeer masterpiece but a masterful forgery, painted by none other than himself. While the truth is considerably more complicated, van Meegeren’s story reduces neatly to the kind of handsome, upscale night-out offering that still draws sophisticated older audiences to art houses — catnip for those who...

Fortitude International will introduce international buyers in Cannes to The Medusa starring Jesse Eisenberg, Pierce Brosnan and Vanessa Redgrave.
Peter Webber will direct his second film based on a renowned work of art after 2003’s Girl With A Pearl Earring, named after the painting by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.
The Medusa stars Eisenberg as Theodore Gericault, the early 19th century pioneer of the French Romantic movement whose masterpiece The Raft Of The Medusa was inspired by the sinking of a French frigate.
Survivors of the wreck spoke of incompetence and cannibalism and the painting stirred anti-royalist sentiment at the time of King Louis Xviii’s rule.
Brosnan will portray Gericault’s uncle Caruel, the artist’s nemesis who is hell-bent on ruining him, while Redgrave plays the painter’s anti-royalist innkeeper.
Sophia Al-Maria adapted the screenplay from Jonathan Miles’s book The Wreck Of The Medusa.
