Best Picture favorite “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” were the drama and comedy editing winners at the 74th Ace Eddie Awards, March 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. “Oppenheimer” editor Jennifer Lame is now a step closer to winning the Oscar for deftly balancing Christopher Nolan’s interlocking, subjective POVs of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy) in color and adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white.
The other Oscar nominees are “The Holdovers” (edited by Ace president Kevin Tent), Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Anatomy of Fall,” and “Poor Things.”
“Spider-Man: Across the Universe” won the animation award, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” earned theatrical documentary honors, and “Escaping Twin Flames” took the non-theatrical prize.

“That’s like a billion dollars in Indiana.” That quip from Bobby Axelrod is one of the memorable lines in the series finale of “Billions,” the Showtime drama series that wrapped its seven-season run Oct. 27 with the crowd-pleasing episode “Admirals Fund.”
Axelrod, played by Damian Lewis, delivers that line as he takes a victory lap after demolishing his latest foil, rival hedge fund manager Mike Prince (Corey Stoll). It’s a reference to that fact that Prince, after an elaborate sting pulled off by Axelrod and the core “Billions” ensemble, is left wiped out but for $100 million he invested with Black-owned banks a few years ago. Axe’s comment and Prince’s broad smile suggest that the latter is headed to the Midwest to nurse his wounds and rise anew.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “Admirals Fund,” the series finale of “Billions,” now streaming on Paramount+.
“Billions” ends where it began. At the close of “Admirals Fund,” the series finale of the Showtime drama series, Bobby Axelrod is scheming once again to make a new fortune with his merry band of alpha-male traders, who are revved up by his leadership to kill in the name of capitalism.
The closing segment of “Billions” was unabashedly designed to appeal to fans of the sudsy drama, which turns on the crazier-than-fiction tales of hedge fund managers and traders. Axelrod, played with gusto until the final frame by Damian Lewis, winds up on top. His most recent foil, rival trader/investor Michael Prince (Corey Stoll), has been defeated, publicly humiliated — although he is destined to rise again. “As it has ever been for men like you over the centuries,” Prince’s loyal...

Showtime’s Billions season seven episode seven’s promo shows Mike Prince’s people hosting a black-tie gambling event. The promo also offers a snippet of Prince being turned down, something that doesn’t happen often enough. Episode six brought Bobby Axelrod back into the thick of things when he struck a deal with Chuck Rhoades to help out Grigor Andolov (John Malkovich), which meant that Axe now owes Chuck a favor. That has to come into play soon, given that we’re in the final stretch of the final season. However, there’s no sign of Axe in the promo or the episode’s photos.

Taylor will star as Dr. Eleanor Mayer, a highly acclaimed psychiatrist known for her modern-Freudian approach, in a recurring role. In this clip, she confronts Maggie Siff’s own highly motivated psychiatrist/performance coach character, Wendy.
“It is no secret that you are extraordinary, Wendy. But I think you can be even better,” Dr. Mayer says in the clip. “I would like to help you with that.”
“Thank you, but I’m not in the market for a performance coach,” Wendy fires back.
“I was suggesting therapy. Isn’t that why you’re here?” Dr. Mayer asks.

“I like how our characters are evolving over the seasons,” reveals “A Black Lady Sketch Show” editor Stephanie Filo. For our recent webchat she continues, “In a lot of sketch shows there’s a one-note version of a character.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The half hour sketch show, which spoofs a wide range of genres, stars creator and co-producer Robin Thede alongside Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend. The fourth season premiered on HBO in April.

Robin Thede ain’t here for any more Emmy snubs for the hilarious Black women from “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”
“We’re showing you the characters behind the characters,” she recently told Variety at a Q&a panel. “I love it. You see the full range of actors on the show. But I want to note that none of the show’s actors have ever been nominated for an Emmy, and they deserve it.”
Four seasons into the groundbreaking HBO series, the creative minds and strategists hope to change that.

Members of the crafts community gave generally favorable marks to this year’s Oscars presentation, following the outrage surrounding the 2022 Academy Awards in which eight categories were sidelined.
“I’d call it a win for the Academy,” one Oscar recipient from a prior year tells The Hollywood Reporter.
A year ago, eight categories — editing, makeup and hairstyling, production design, score, sound, animated short, documentary short and live action short — were presented an hour before the live telecast, with clumsily-edited excerpts played during the broadcast, a move that was widely-criticized for disrespectful treatment of these branches of filmmaking.
“Last night I was proud to be an Academy member,” sats one of last season’s nominees, whose category was relegated to the non-live portion of that presentation. This year, all categories were presented live, with the telecast including a Qr code audience members at home could scan on their phones to learn more about the crafts categories.

From the opening montage of the 2023 Oscars, the Academy signaled an effort to place attention on the crafts, following last year’s widely criticized decision to present eight categories prior to the live telecast and instead including clumsily-edited excerpts from those presentations in the live broadcast.

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.
Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.
“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.
Other winners included awards season faves “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Fire of Love,” and “The Bear.” See the complete list of winners, marked in bold, below.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” took yet another top film prize at yet another awards show on Sunday. At the American Cinema Editors (Ace) Eddie Awards, the maximalist movie directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won Best Edited Feature Film for Paul Rogers’ work that stitched together all those multiverses. On the drama side of theatrical film releases, “Top Gun: Maverick,” edited by Eddie Hamilton, took top honors.
Surprises were few among the film winners, with “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” edited by Ken Schretzmann and Holly Klein, triumphing yet again. And “Fire of Love,” edited by Erin Casper and Jocelyne Chaput, followed up its recent DGA win with another victory in the documentary category.

Top Gun: Maverick took the marquee Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor and Everything Everywhere All At Once landed the top Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) award at the 73rd Ace Eddie Awards Sunday. Hosted by Ashley Nicole Black, the winners were announced live in a ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Eddie Hamilton, Ace, edited Maverick, a film that earned Tom Cruise the Producer’s Guild’s David O. Selznick award at last week’s PGA Awards. The honor puts Hamilton and Top Gun: Maverick in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, for which both Maverick and Everything Everywhere are nominated.
Since the turn of the 21st century, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has gone on to score the Academy Award for Best Editing 13 of 22 times — but none of the past three years. In 2022, King Richard took that Ace trophy, but Dune went home with the Oscar.

“A Narrative That Exposes the Horror of Losing One’s Autonomy”: Editor Taylor Mason on birth/rebirth
Director Laura Moss’s feature debut birth/rebirth is laden with horror references, which was a principal reason for editor Taylor Mason vying for the gig. The film is essentially a modern retelling of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, with an overtly femme twist. It follows Celie (Judy Reyes), a maternity nurse who experiences a sudden tragedy, and Rose (Marin Ireland), a brilliant (if somewhat anti-social) pathologist, form an unlikely bond over the latter’s experimental reanimation process. As their friendship develops, they both reassess their respective moral compasses—shocking each other, and themselves, in the process. Mason spoke with Filmmaker about the film’s myriad horror […]

Emma Corrin, the English actor who embodied Diana Frances Spencer, Princess of Wales in Season 4 of Netflix’s “The Crown,” called for genderless categories at major entertainment awards shows in an interview with BBC News. In particular, Corrin, who identifies as non-binary as uses they/them pronouns, noted that nominations for best actor and best actress should be merged into one, gender-neutral category.
Corrin has earned praise for their supporting performance in Michael Grandage’s new period drama “My Policeman,” but the actor shares that they feel discomfort at the prospect of campaigning in a gendered category.
“It’s difficult for me at the moment trying to justify in my head being non-binary and being nominated in female categories,” Corrin told BBC News. “When it comes to categories, do we need to make it specific as to whether you’re being nominated for a female role or a male role?...

Prepare for more Black lady hilarity as Robin Thede’s Emmy-winning HBO comedy series “A Black Lady Sketch Show” has started production on its fourth season.
Created by and starring Thede, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” was renewed in June following a strong third season that netted two Emmys — one for outstanding picture editing for variety programming and outstanding directing for a variety series (Bridget Stokes). The first three seasons of the sketch series have garnered 13 Emmy nominations and three wins.
Variety has exclusively learned that production is now underway in Los Angeles, with returning core cast members Thede, Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend teasing a new sketch (directed by Stokes) set at “Brothaby’s” in this first-look image. Season 4 also boasts three new featured players — DaMya Gurley, Tamara Jade and Angel Laketa Moore — who join in the fun as the sketch series continues to feature “Black women living relatable...

Saturday Night Live has won the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series for the last five years and ten times since 2010.

The win could be a sign of things to come as A Black Lady Sketch Show is up against regular winner SNL in the main variety category at the Primetime Emmys next week. Could an upset be on the cards?
A Black Lady Sketch Show also beat out Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the category.

“A Black Lady Sketch Show,” created by Robin Thede with fellow actors Gabrielle Dennis, Ashley Nicole Black and Skye Townsend is certainly an improvisational, production-heavy, comic masterpiece. But who knew that it was in the business of making history?
Last year for Season 2, editor Stephanie Filo made history as part of the first-ever, all women-of-color editing team to win an Emmy. Now, in 2022, for its third season, the editing team of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” — Filo, Taylor Mason, Bradinn French, Robyn Wilson — are the first all-Black editing team to be nominated for an Emmy.
Of this achievement, each editor is proud.
“For all of us, what’s important is representation,” says Filo. “’Black Lady Sketch Show’ proves what it means when you prioritize inclusion. Robin is efficient at finding diverse teams behind, and before, the camera.”
French, who worked with Filo in the editing room for Lifetime’s “Surviving R Kelly,...

“The world of post-production; it’s not a very diverse space,” states “A Black Lady Sketch Show” editor Stephanie Filo. For our recent webchat, the Emmy winner adds, “It meant a lot to be representation in that way. But I think we shouldn’t have been the first all women of color team winning in 2021. Robin Thede (creator) always says we’re ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show,’ not ‘The Black Lady Sketch Show.’ People can come after us and do it. We’re the first, but that’s in the hopes that there can be many more.” Watch our exclusive video interview with the editing team above.
The sketch show also stars Thede and has received its third straight Emmy nomination for Best Variety Sketch Series. It’s been renewed by HBO for a fourth season and is the first sketch show to have featured an all-Black women writer’s room and all-Black female cast.

“Billions” could conceivably go on forever. As long as there are people pulling down huge profits on asset manipulation, hostile corporate takeovers, and land grabs, there will be an opposite reaction, however equal. It’s the dynamic set up in the show’s early going, when Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) fancied himself a crusader against the excess and greed of the billionaire class. Back then, he had one particular wealth management operator in his sights, leading to a drawn-out psychological battle with Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) marked by uneasy alliances and scorched-earth tactics.
However primal that feud between money and the law might seem, though, the Chuck/Axe rivalry had reached a breaking point leading up to Season 6. The show had double-crossed and head-faked enough times that, even while still retaining its particular over-the-top joys, the well was beginning to run dry. So rather than try to retool the same dynamic yet again,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not seen “No Direction Home,” the Season 5 finale of “Billions.”
“Billions” will get a big reset in its upcoming sixth season as the durable Showtime drama shift its prism on the world of billionaires, vulture capitalists and global high finance.
“Billions” co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien confirm that Damian Lewis has bowed out after five seasons as the show’s central figure, the meglomaniac hedge fund billionaire Bobby Axelrod. Lewis may come back in the future — you can never say never — but Season 6 will move forward with a new king of what was once Axe’s castle, Mike Prince as played by Corey Stoll. In the narrative of “Billions,” “Herr Axelrod,” as Lewis was greeted in his final scene, will cool his heels in Switzerland for a while. Season 6 will bow Jan. 23, Showtime confirmed Sunday.

In this week’s episode of Hollywood Remixed, The Hollywood Reporter‘s podcast about inclusion and representation in entertainment, Billions‘ Asia Kate Dillon joins the show to talk about how non-binary representation changes lives – starting with their own.
