In body-swap comedies, the acting is its own kind of brazen put-on fun. Adult actors get to channel their inner innocent kid; young actors get to channel their “serious” adult. And that’s why, ever since the original “Freaky Friday” (1976) brought this genre into being, it’s been marked by instances of true Hollywood artistry, like Tom Hanks’ classic performance in “Big” (though that wasn’t technically a swap comedy) or the lyrically funny bedlam that Jennifer Garner brought off in “13 Going on 30,” one of the best movies of its year.
But even that was 20 years ago. In the decades since, dozens — hundreds — of Hollywood comedies have wallowed in a baseline joke of American middle-class behavior, repeating it again and again like a sacred trope. Today, the movies teach us, adults already are overgrown children: creatures of impulse and appetite and development arrested by their immersion in pop culture.

Plot: Jess and Bill Walker are doing their best to keep their family connected as their children grow older, more independent, and more distant. When a chance encounter with an astrological reader causes the family to wake up to a full body switch, on the morning of the most important day of each of their lives, can the Walkers unite to land a promotion, college interview, record deal and soccer tryout?
Review: In the sub-genre of body swap movies, very few films stand out as quality films. The concept itself is ridiculous and silly and tends to aim more toward family-friendly fare like Freaky Friday and 13 Going On 30. Still, even those movies benefitted from some personality and edge that helped them earn some originality, a quality sorely lacking in Netflix’s new Christmas-themed comedy Family Switch. Everything you need to know about this movie is showcased in the trailer,...

At this point, the body switch comedy genre is pretty well worn. Big, Freaky Friday (twice), 17 Again, 13 Going on 30, etc., have pretty much defined and exhausted what can be done with the concept to keep it fresh. The latter 2004 hit actually starred Jennifer Garner, who is now returning to the genre again, this time as producer and star of Netflix’s holiday comedy Family Switch.
This time around, the formula is expanded to have an entire family experience a life-altering cosmic moment and become their opposites. The parents become their kids, the kids become their parents, even the baby becomes the French Bulldog. Guess what? It works, even offering some Lol moments along the way in a movie that isn’t trying to reinvent anything here, just finding a new angle to squeeze some more life out of it.

The cast includes Emma Myers, Brady Noon, Bashir Salahuddin, Matthias Schweighöfer, and Xosha Roquemore. Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Paul Scheer, Fortune Feimster, and Rita Moreno also star.
McG directs from a screenplay by Victoria Strouse and Adam Sztykiel, based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s Bedtime For Mommy novel. McG, Jennifer Lawrence, Lawrence Grey, Ben Everard, Nicole King Solaka, and Mary Viola serve as producers, with David Hyman, Jason Rosenthal, and Victoria Strause executive producing.

McG is set to direct from a script by Adam Sztykiel (Black Adam). McG, who has a long history with Netflix that includes titles The Babysitter and Tall Girl, will also produce along with Wonderland partner Mary Viola.

It’s a day of yes for Jennifer Garner and Netflix: As part of a new deal with the streamer, Garner will develop a number of new movies for her to produce and star in — and one of them is a sequel to “Yes Day.”
The family comedy premiered on Netflix in March, and according to the company, it’s Netflix’s biggest kids and family movie to date, and was seen in 62 million households. In it, Garner and Édgar Ramírez play parents caught in a cycle of “no” with their three kids until they decide to say yes to everything (within certain limitations). The concept of “Yes Day” was based on something Garner would do with her kids from the children’s book of the same name by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.

Jennifer Garner’s family comedy Yes Day is on track to be seen by 53 million households in the first four weeks of its release, Garner said on her Instagram feed Friday. The Miguel Arteta-directed movie was released March 12 on the streaming giant and has already been No. 1 in 50 countries where it has debuted, according to Netflix.
If the projection holds, the pic co-starring Edgar Ramirez would be on track to be the streaming giant’s second-biggest Kids & Family release behind this past season’s The Christmas Chronicles: Part 2, which was seen by 61 million subs in its first month. By comparison, its kids title We Can Be Heroes was projected to be seen by 44 million in its first four weeks.
In Netflix’s metric, a view is counted as any sampling of at least two minutes of programming.
Last year, Netflix released its top 10 films list where the action thriller Extraction was No.

Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez are at the mercy of their kids in this unmemorable family comedy
Think of a yes day as The Purge for kids. For 24 hours every year, (almost) all laws don’t apply. Their parents, who usually and understandably say no to the majority of requests, are forced to say yes to everything as long as it doesn’t result in death or some sort of illegal behaviour. It’s apparently a thing that happens, inspired by the children’s book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld, and while the idea might give even those of us adults who don’t have kids a severe case of night sweats, it’s one that will drive anyone younger into a frenzy.

Twenty-five years ago, “Yes Day” would have been a dumbed-down high-concept Hollywood family comedy, and you could say it still is. The difference is that now it’s the Netflix version, which means, in this case, that it’s not so much “dumb” as post-psychological. The premise, for anyone who’s a parent, will sound rather catchy. Allison (Jennifer Garner), taken to task by her three children for being a Debbie Downer of a mom — a joyless disciplinarian who’s perpetually saying “No” — agrees to indulge her kids in a Yes Day. That is, for an entire day, she and her husband, the genial Carlos (Edgar Ramirez), will have to say yes to any request, big or small, that the kids make. “No, you can’t do that” isn’t on the table. The idea is that this will act as a kind of do-what-you-please purge for the children — a...
