Nearly 90 Jewish leaders in Missouri have signed an open letter to Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) urging him to drop his support for Harrison Butker, after the Kansas City Chiefs kicker spread “one of the world’s oldest and most recognizable antisemitic lies” in his controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College.
Butker’s speech at the Catholic institution generated immediate controversy for promoting retrograde conservative views, such as suggesting women in the audience should embrace their roles as a wives and mothers.

Republicans are up in arms about students demonstrating against the war in Gaza on university campuses across the nation. The epicenter for the now weekslong protest movement is Columbia University, where on Tuesday students occupied Hamilton Hall before the NYPD forcibly removed and arrested them. J.D. Vance, the Donald Trump-loving Republican senator from Ohio, on Wednesday night told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that the students who took control of the campus building should face legal consequences.

Self-avowed pro-First Amendment, anti-government repression Senators Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) are demanding President Joe Biden unleash the full force of the state’s National Guard to suppress pro-Palestinian student protests at Columbia University.
“If [New York City Mayor] Eric Adams won’t send the NYPD and [New York Governor] Kathy Hochul won’t send the National Guard, Joe Biden has a duty to take charge and break up these mobs,” Cotton wrote Monday on X, formerly Twitter, describing the protests as “nascent pogroms” against Jews — invoking the term used to describe historic massacres against Jewish communities.

Following a day in which CEO Mark Zuckerberg took a drubbing at a Senate hearing, Meta today reported strong revenue growth that beat Wall Street expectations.
The company also declared a cash dividend of $0.50 per share, its first ever.
Revenue for the three months ended December 31 climbed 25% to $40.1 billion, driven by growth in ad impressions across its platforms.
Meta shares jumped in extended trading after it reported income of $14.02 billion. Earnings per share was $5.33.
“We had a good quarter as our community and business continue to grow,” Zuckerberg said in a statement. “We’ve made a lot of progress on our vision for advancing AI and the metaverse.”
Meta also said that it expects first quarter 2024 total revenue to be in the range of $34.5 billion-$37 billion.
In an earnings call, Zuckerberg called the past 12 months as our “year of efficiency,” following the slashing of tens of thousands of jobs. The company has 67,300 employees,...

Parents of deceased and exploited children heckled Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday during a Senate hearing on the role tech companies play in online child sexual exploitation.
Parents holding photos of their deceased children, many of whom died by suicide, audibly hissed at Zuckerberg as he entered the chamber. According to NBC News, some of the family members who attended the hearing hold Meta’s subsidiary, Instagram, responsible for facilitating the abuse and suicide of their children.
As the CEO gave his opening statement to lawmakers, he acknowledged the families’ presence in the room.

Conservatives often criticize awards shows peppered with overtly political statements, but one GOP senator has written a letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors asking them to do include just those sort of messages in this year’s telecast.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-mo) wants the Academy to include the story of those who have suffered as a result of America’s nuclear testing in its celebration of the most-nominated film during this year’s Oscar ceremony.
“Public interest in J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life story has never been greater, and the ongoing significance of his legacy will undoubtedly be a major focus at the 96th Academy Awards,” wrote Hawley in reference to Oppenheimer, which garnered 13 nominations.
“As you continue preparations for the ceremony on March 10, I write to urge you to include programming that recognizes the victims of America’s nuclear testing.”

Maga firebrand Josh Hawley is no stranger to political malfeasance — he’s the election-denying Missouri senator who famously raised a fist in support of the insurrectionists assembling on the morning of Jan. 6, then was caught on camera a few hours later desperately sprinting from those same rioters as they descended on the Capitol.
But now, shockingly, Hawley is apparently stooping even lower with a dirty tricks campaign aimed at an even more sacred American institution; he appears to be meddling in the Oscar race.
Hawley released a Jan. 25 open letter to the Academy demanding that Hollywood help people exposed to radiation during the Manhattan Project by “telling their stories” — a dig, perhaps, at Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, currently the front runner for Best Picture. “The Oppenheimer film tells a compelling story of these test programs,” his letter goes on. “But it does not tell the story of the Americans left...

According to recent reports, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi received a 65% return on her investments in 2023, exceeding the overall market performance by a wide margin. That is over double the S&P 500’s overall 24% gain.
Her portfolio dropped to 19.8% in 2022 after she announced a sale of 25,000 shares of Nvidia.
The New York Post reported in December that Pelosi bought back approximately 50 call options worth $2 million in the company towards the end of 2023, according to securities filings.
There is no suggestion that Pelosi did anything illegal with her trades.
She profited from Nvidia’s valuation surpassing $1 trillion and owns millions of dollars worth of Microsoft and Apple stock, which have risen around 55% this year.
Her gains in Nvidia are due to the success of artificial intelligence.
Following these reports, her fellow Democrats have called for a ban on stock trades by members of Congress. The ban has bipartisan support on Capitol Hill.

More than a decade ago, the normalization of tech companies carrying content created by news organizations without directly paying them — cannibalizing readership and ad revenue — precipitated the decline of the media industry. With the rise of generative artificial intelligence, those same firms threaten to further tilt the balance of power between Big Tech and news.
On Wednesday, lawmakers in the Senate Judiciary Committee referenced their failure to adopt legislation that would’ve barred the exploitation of content by Big Tech in backing proposals that would require AI companies to strike licensing deals with news organizations.
Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut and chair of the committee, joined several other senators in supporting calls for a licensing regime and to establish a framework clarifying that intellectual property laws don’t protect AI companies using copyrighted material to build their chatbots.

Republicans know their draconic stance on abortion rights is a losing issue with voters, so much so that it looks like they’re exploring a full PR rebrand of their anti-abortion vocabulary. According to a report from NBC News, GOP strategists and lawmakers have found that the term “pro-life” is generally associated with the hard-line restrictions on abortion access they’ve pushed for decades. So they’re brainstorming new terms to help soften the public’s perception of their efforts to criminalize reproductive freedom.

“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough was outraged on Friday morning, this time by the response from some Republicans to Donald Trump’s second indictment. According to the MSNBC host, those responses are nothing but “sleazy” sentiments that demonstrate an “absolute contempt for the United States of America.”
The second indictment officially came down on Thursday, as part of Jack Smith’s ongoing investigation into the mishandling of classified documents that were eventually seized from Mar-a-Lago. It’s unknown exactly what charges Trump faces next, but Scarborough noted on Friday morning that he believes Trump will have to plea out to avoid jail time.
Of course, some prominent Republicans — from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to Steve Scalise to Elise Stefanik — have thrown their support behind the twice-impeached former president once again, instead attacking Biden and saying that he has “weaponized” his Department of Justice to attack his own political opponents.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden reportedly reached bipartisan agreement on a new debt ceiling bill this week, but Republicans apparently aren’t too pleased with it – something the “Morning Joe” hosts called out as “hypocrisy squared” on Wednesday morning.
The new bill, which is set to face a vote on Wednesday, needs to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate before the June 5 deadline set by the Treasury Department, or the country risks default. On Tuesday though, the Freedom Caucus minced no words about their feelings on the bill, saying “we will do everything in our power to stop it and end it now.”
In discussing that opposition on Wednesday morning, host Joe Scarborough was just kind of flabbergasted, considering how Republicans handled the debt crisis while Trump was in office.

Award-winning actor Jon Hamm voiced a new campaign ad for Democrat Lucas Kunce, who is competing with Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) in Missouri’s 2024 Senate race.

TikTok is reportedly revamping its creator fund in an effort to pay out more to each creator.
As we’ve previously covered, the 1 billion fund has some fatal flaws, namely that it’s a set, stagnant amount of money being divvied up among an ever-growing number of creators going viral.
With the fund in its current state, TikTok pays out about 550,000 per day to creators based in the U.S.–so, as more creators make content that generates high view counts, there’s less money to go around for everyone getting a slice of the fund.
But according to a report from The Information, TikTok’s trying to change that. The proposed revamp limits fund eligibility to creators with at least 100,000 followers, and adjusting the way it pays out to creators who make longer videos.
TikTok hasn’t confirmed if or when this revamp is coming to the U.S.

Donald Trump had a message for Republicans about his 2024 presidential announcement: Endorse me now, or pay later.
In the days running up to the election, Trump made a series of phone calls to GOP lawmakers and other elected officials, demanding that they endorse him before he announced he’s running — or at least right after, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversations. The president said he was tracking who endorsed him early, adding that “those who waited too long” were “not gonna like” what happens when he wins.

Let It Be known that Michael Fanone does not in any way, shape, or form want to visit the U.S. Capitol. “It’s so fucking lame,” he tells me on the phone one August night as we’re discussing what we should do over the next few days together. What he absolutely does not want to do is this: He does not want to roam the so-called hallowed halls of democracy or gaze pensively upon the portraits of dead white men or retrace the steps he took on Jan.

Washington, Sep 15 (Ians) The US Senate Homeland Security Committee grilled executives from Meta, TikTok, YouTube and Twitter over privacy and moderation failures on their respective platforms in recent years, saying that they “keep avoiding sharing really very important information with us”.
TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas, Twitter General Manager of Consumer and Revenue, Jay Sullivan, Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox and YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan testified before the panel late on Wednesday.
“I’ll be honest, I’m frustrated that all of you (who) have a prominent seat at the table when these business decisions are made were not more prepared to speak to specifics about your product development process, even when you are specifically asked if you would bring specific numbers to us today,” lamented committee Chair Senator Gary Peters.

Based on their mostly unfortunate track record, with a few commendable exceptions, it seems almost justifiably instinctual to decry any company’s intent to pursue English-language remakes of celebrated titles in other tongues and from other geographical settings.
But when the opposite phenomenon occurs, and a filmmaker abroad takes on a new version of a Hollywood property, the resulting effort can turn out just as disappointing.
Enter “Laal Singh Chaddha,” the Indian reimagining of Robert Zemeckis’ “Forrest Gump,” a financially successful and Oscar-winning drama that has lost its luster in the years since it was released in 1994, the more its blatantly questionable tropes are reexamined.

In a recent ad spot from John Fetterman, the Pennsylvania lieutenant governor running for an open U.S. Senate seat, he attacked his rival, Mehmet Oz, as “not one of us” and part of the wealthy entertainment elite.
“Hey, Doc Hollywood, save your money, Pennsylvania is not for sale,” Fetterman said in the spot, as video ran of Oz, the longtime syndicated daytime TV host, kissing his star on the Walk of Fame.
It’s certainly not a novel for a campaign to try to tar a rival for Hollywood ties, but this time it’s a Democrat, Fetterman, trying to tar a Republican, Oz, for his showbiz embrace. It’s a bit of a twist on a common campaign tactic used by the right against their leftward opponents, who have for generations enjoyed dominance in Hollywood fundraising and endorsements.

James Franco’s casting as Fidel Castro in “Alina of Cuba” has been met with swift backlash on social media.
As confirmed Thursday by TheWrap, the actor will portray the Cuban revolutionary in the upcoming indie film about his daughter Alina Fernandez.
Actor John Leguizamo, a vocal advocate for greater Latino representation in Hollywood, led the charge on Instagram.
“How is this still going on?” he wrote in a Friday post. “How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well? No more appropriation Hollywood and streamers! Boycott! This F’d up!”
Adding that it would be “seriously difficult” to represent Castro “without aggrandizement,” the “Encanto” star said: “I don’t got a prob with Franco but he ain’t Latino!”

Mehmet Oz may not have been the direct target of any of John Oliver’s segments on Sunday night’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” but that doesn’t mean the late night host didn’t sneak at least one shot in. And of course, that shot was fired at Oz’s medical advice — and how similar Oliver says it is to advice from the 1950s.
The main topic of “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday was mental health care, a topic which, as Oliver noted, “historically, humans haven’t handled particularly well.” To kick off the segment, he pulled up a video of an ad from 1959, showing a group of “pretty nurses” being sent to a salon as part of their training. The logic at the time — delivered by a typical Mid-Atlantic male voice — was that “If you can persuade a mentally ill woman to take interest and pride in her appearance,...

Colbert on Manchin’s Reconciliation Support: He ‘Was Visited By the Ghost of Climate Future’ (Video)
“The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert, like many Americans, was surprised when West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin changed course and came out in support of a reconciliation deal with Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer that would help fight climate change. So, during Thursday night’s monologue, Colbert imagined how Manchin finally came around — and it involved a classic Charles Dickens plot twist.
“This bill is a marked departure from Manchin’s positions only days earlier. So what happened?” Colbert asked. “Turns out Manchin was visited by the Ghost of Climate Future.'”
He then played a clip from “A Christmas Carol,” replacing the dialog and casting Manchin as Scrooge.

Stephen Colbert called out the Justice Department’s decision to finally announce an investigation into former president Donald Trump on Thursday’s “The Late Show,” likening the legal body to that coworker who is only just now discovering “Game of Thrones.”
“There’s bad news for former president Kermit the Fraud,” Colbert said, opening the theme during his monologue, and giving Trump another new nickname. “Turns out the Justice Department is investigating the former president’s actions in their January 6 criminal probe.”
Colbert had to take a moment for his audience to stop cheering over the news, but when he did, he called the Justice Department out.
“It is about damn time,” he said. “At this point the investigators are like the last person at the office to catch onto a popular TV show. ‘So get this, guys – there are dragons. But they hardly ever show them. There’s lots of nudity.

As the congressional committee’s investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riots continues to unfurl across publicly broadcast hearings, more and more shocking information has come to light. Among the major revelations is that the text messages sent by Secret Service agents on and before the insurrection were missing due to a pre-planned “system migration.”
That explanation doesn’t appear to have convinced Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Congressman who sits on the House committee investigating the events of Jan. 6.
“I don’t really buy that for one minute,” Raskin said Monday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” “For one thing, isn’t it a little odd that all of the texts would vanish for Jan. 6 and Jan. 5? Of all the days, what an odd coincide that is. There was a pre-planned migration of the phone that just happened to be on the same day as the first violent insurrection in American history?...

On Monday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert had some fun roasting Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, who he referred to as “Fascist Gump” – you know, because of the video showing Hawley running away from the Jan. 6 mob he egged on just hours earlier.
This time, Colbert was prompted to lob some insults at Hawley because of a defiant speech he gave over the weekend at a Republican event in Florida, just days after the humiliating video was released during the primetime Jan. 6 hearings last Thursday.

The hosts of “The View” had nothing but disdain for Matt Gaetz on Monday morning, after the congressman claimed that “the women with the least likelihood of getting pregnant are the ones most worried about having abortions.” For the panel, his remarks were more than a little ironic, given current investigations into his own sexual encounters with women.
During his appearance the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, Gaetz went off about abortion rights activists, saying “nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb!” During “The View,” the hosts played a bit more of his speech, in which he continued on the appearance of women fighting to protect abortion rights.
“You got ankles weaker than the legal reasoning behind Roe v Wade,” he said. “A few of them need to get up and march! They need to get up and march for like an hour a day.

John Oliver returned from vacation on Sunday night for a new episode of “Last Week Tonight,” and to start the show, he admitted there was no way he could possibly cover everything he missed this month. That said, the late night host couldn’t resist piling onto the mockery of Senator Josh Hawley for fleeing rioters on January 6.

So naturally, Oliver got a few shots in before getting into his main story.

The January 6th Committee’s primetime hearing drew an estimated 17.7 million viewers, an 11 dropoff from the 20 million who watched the committee’s last nighttime event in June.
The figures from Nielsen are across 10 networks. The committee’s June 9 hearing, kicking off its series, drew about 20 million on 11 networks.
Nielsen said that each of the eight hearings averaged 13.1 million, while the two primetime hearings averaged 18.9 million. The daytime hearings averaged 11.2 million.
Those are solid albeit not blockbuster numbers. The committee’s hearings, though, have commanded news cycles, and moments have gone viral on social media. That happened on Thursday, when the committee played a clip of Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo) running from the Senate floor as the mob approached on January 6. “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert went live once again following the conclusion of Thursday’s primetime hearings from the Jan. 6 committee, and no politician was spared.
The funnyman mostly stuck to one-liner-style reactions to points made by the committee as the members recounted how former president Donald Trump watched Fox News and ignored calls to speak out to condemn the mob violence escalating at the capitol. Senator Josh Hawley, though, who famously pumped his fist in the air as he entered the capitol on the day the 2020 election was eventually certified, got the comedy sound effects treatment.
Around the 9:19 mark in the video above, Colbert ripped the politico for how quickly he left the capitol after his famous gesture to Trump supporters on the way in.
