“Ouch,” said one UK independent producer.
UK producers have applauded the focus on transparency and clarity from the revamped British Film Institute (Bf) Filmmaking Fund unveiled earlier this week, but are increasingly concerned about the fall in funding for indie features and an apparent reduction in the number that will be supported through the National Lottery Funding.
“I appreciate their effort to have more transparency and formalise the application processes a bit more in terms of response time for instance,” said Hélène Sifre, producer at Kleio Films, who produced Bifa-winning Blue Jean, the debut feature from Georgia Oakley, which received...

For much of this year’s awards conversation, The Banshees Of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once have dominated in the major categories – but at the 2023 BAFTAs_ that cleaned up. Edward Berger’s film bagged seven awards on the night including Best Film – building up momentum throughout the show as it won multiple technical categories and major gongs over the course of the ceremony.
“For a German-language film, we’ve been blessed with so many nominations, and winning this is just incredible,” said producer Malte Grunert on stage while picking up Best Film. The film’s big wins also came freighted with the relevancy of its World War I story. Upon winning Adapted Screenplay, writer-director Berger noted that in five days time it will be a year since war began in Ukraine, and stated that: “There are no heroes in any war.”

The BAFTA Awards were presented on February 19 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). So who prevailed? Scroll down for the complete 2023 BAFTA Awards winners list in all categories.
BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs could well give us a preview of what the Oscars might do in three weeks time on March 12. And since voting for Oscars starts on March 2, just 11 days after the BAFTAs, these awards could be doubly influential.
However, the BAFTAs amended their nominations voting as of last year. After the initial longlists were decided, the nominees for acting and directing were chosen by small juries, leveling the playing field between the highest-profile awards contenders and worthy underdogs.

Georgia Oakley, director of the BAFTA-nominated British film “Blue Jean,” says she “wrestles” with awards season and those it chooses to celebrate, when filmmaking is such a collaborative effort.
“I wrestled with this idea in my head,” says Oakley while speaking to Variety about her feature debut “Blue Jean” scoring a BAFTA nomination for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer.
“I’ve become very conscious in the last few months that the film industry seems to run on lists and awards and things that are pitting creatives against each other in a way that does in some ways feel quite unnatural when you’re making something that is so collaborative. So there’s definitely a conflict in my mind around this stuff.”
She continues by highlighting recent positive steps within the industry: “But on the other side of my brain, I think that in the same six months,...

Editor’s note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films factoring in this year’s movie awards races.
For her debut feature, filmmaker Georgia Oakley returns to 1980s Britain as Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government has introduced Section 28, a clause of the Local Government Act that seeks to prohibit “the promotion of homosexuality” by local authorities across the United Kingdom.
At the time, protests were rife, but many gay women and men felt compelled to keep their sexuality a secret.
Blue Jean, written and directed by Oakley, follows Jean, a school gym teacher who keeps her sexuality a secret from her colleagues. The threat is immediate and real: if exposed, her love life could cost her her job. However, Jean finds little sympathy from her girlfriend, Viv. Out and proud, Viv is part of a cooperative of similarly assertive lesbian women. Viv regards...

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

World War One drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” leads this year’s BAFTA nominations with 14 nods, tying with “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the most-nominated non-English language film in the awards’ history.

“Gandhi” is the most nominated film at the BAFTAs with 16 nods and “All Quiet” ties with “Atonement,” which also had 14.

“The Alienist’s” Rosy McEwen has boarded Georgia Oakley’s upcoming feature “Blue Jean” in the lead role.
McEwen, who was named one of Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch 2020, will play the eponymous Jean, a teacher who finds herself grappling with her identity during the tail-end of the 1980s.
Oakley, whose debut short film “Little Bird” was nominated for best narrative short film at Tribeca Film Festival, is directing the film from her original screenplay.
“Jean is a woman forced to wear multiple masks in the different areas of her life, and as such she has this sort of taut, cloistered energy that Rosy has absolutely mastered,” Oakley said in a statement. “I think it takes an actor such as Rosy, with such intelligence and poise to communicate these kinds of complex emotions; I can’t wait to work with her to bring Jean to life.”
