Alicia Silverstone's TV pilot, "Hr," will be directed by "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star, the cable network, Lifetime, announced on Saturday (July 13).
"Hr" is the working title of Silverstone's and Starr's pilot. The story focuses on a character named Ellen Bell, to be played by Silverstone. Shortly after Bell suffers a head injury, she begins to experience professional and personal changes in her life as the formerly uptight director of Human Resources at a multinational corporation.
Star will also serve as an executive producer on the Lifetime pilot, along with Aaron Kaplan. Glenn Porter and Michael Lohmann will be co-executive producers. There is no expected airdate for the project.
This is far from the first TV project for Silverstone, best known for her role in the film, "Clueless." In 2003, the actress starred in the single-season series, "Miss Match." Silverstone also had roles in unaired pilots, "Queen B" and "Pink Collar.

Okay, Silverstone fans, cross your fingers, because you all are very close to getting a wish come true. Alicia Silverstone is very close to starring in a new Lifetime series. She’ll lead the pilot, but the waters are murky. There’s no telling whether this one will make it to a full series order or not. The new drama pilot is called Hr.
I just saw Silverstone in 2012′s Butter. It took me a moment to recognize her, but that voice of her and twisted mouth is very recognizable. Not only is it good to read about her landing a starring role, but it seems like Hr has a solid chance at becoming a Lifetime series and I’ll tell you why.

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping,...

Chicago – Mark Pellington’s “I Melt with You” is one of the worst movies of 2011, but has the benefit of also being among the weirdest. Students of rotten cinema will surely flock to this disaster simply to watch it in morbid, mouth-gaping awe. Yet without a scenery chewing wild card like Nicolas Cage in the ensemble, this mournful mess is far from an enjoyable guilty pleasure.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
While Diablo Cody points a scathingly satirical eye at women who refuse to grow up in her new comedy, “Young Adult,” “Melt” assembles a group of overgrown adolescents and expects us to not only take them seriously but empathize with their suffering. These guys are such self-absorbed losers that they make the cast of “Man Up” look mature and refined in comparison. The picture is an interminable slog toward an inevitable conclusion that just might inspire viewers to rip the hair out of their skulls.

Look, it’s tough to be a middle-aged, middle-class white man in today’s society. Sure, maybe it’s just as tough (or, y’know, tougher… just sayin’) to be female, a minority, or poor. But that doesn’t automatically invalidate a filmmaker attempting to tell a story about four reasonably well-to-do guys sharing their respective midlife crises over one drug-fueled week. We are who we are, we feel what we feel, and our art needs to reflect that, or we’re lying to ourselves. So good for director Mark Pellington and screenwriter Glenn Porter for having the guts to ...

In spite of the fact that the 2011 Sundance Film Festival press screening of director Mark Pellington's (Henry Poole is Here) new movie, I Melt With You, resulted in what New York Magazine (Nym) described as a "moviegoer exodus," speculatively attributed to the "movie's constant drug-taking, which is so immense that the characters may have more lines of coke than lines of dialogue," Magnolia Pictures picked up the distribution rights to the movie and will be releasing it On Demand on Nov. 4, before its limited theatrical run on Dec. 9.

In 'I Melt with You,' a quartet of 44-year-old men who were friends in college reunite for their annual weekend of debauchery and hedonism. Sounds fun, right? Not this time! This time, one of the four is being a real Debbie Downer, reminding everyone of how they've failed to live up to any of their youthful ideals, and how they're all terrible human beings. They start to wonder if life is even worth living. Having sat the ludicrous tedium of 'I Melt with You,' I know how they feel.
Seldom has a film that longed to be so insightful wound up being so superficial. Directed by Mark Pellington ('The Mothman Prophecies,' 'Henry Poole Is Here') and written by Glenn Porter from a story the two conceived together, 'I Melt with You' attempts to turn...

Although it wasn't quite as universally panned as Dito Montiel's Son of No One, and no one lost it and shouted at the filmmakers in a post-screening rant, Mark Pellington's dark bromantic thriller I Melt with You was the most controversially-received film at this year's Sundance Film Festival to land a distribution deal. (Read Movieline's assessment of the film and its disastrous first screening.) Hours after it was announced that Magnolia Pictures would release the polarizing film, Movieline caught up with Pellington and screenwriter Glenn Porter to discuss how they've been processing the negative reviews, how the deal with Magnolia went down, and what kind of tweaks will be made to the film before its theatrical release.

Park City, Ut – January 26, 2011 – The Wagner/Cuban Company's Magnolia Pictures announced today they have acquired Us theatrical rights to Mark Pellington’s I Melt With You, a kinetic and visceral ensemble film starring Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven, Christian McKay, Carla Gugino and Sasha Grey. Jane, Lowe, Piven and McKay give bravura, unhinged performances as four friends on a drug and rock n’ roll fueled trip together in Big Sur. Pellington explores themes of masculinity and friendship with a groundbreaking visual style and dizzying post-punk soundtrack. Written by Glenn Porter, the film was produced by Pellington, Norm Reiss and Rob Cowan, and executive produced by Aaron Gilbert, Heidi Levitt and Neil Labute. “Mark Pellington has made a maverick, stylish and powerful film that resonates for days after viewing,” said Magnolia Svp Tom Quinn. “Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven and Christian McKay give some of the best performances of...

There’s a lot of drinking, snorting, sucking and crying throughout Mark Pellington’s I Melt With You, a two-hour rock-n-roll meditation on the middle-aged white man sadly burdened by plot just at the moment pure abstraction is the only road to take.
Opening with a slew of general declarations thrown at the screen in white text over black, (‘I hate myself,’ ‘I’m not a good lover,’ etc.) it’s clear how singular the movie will be. Pellington’s venting here, and he’s not ashamed about it one bit. The film stars Rob Lowe, Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven and Christian McKay as four 44-year olds disappointed they never became what they thought they would be.
Sound familiar? Of course it does. Thankfully, it doesn’t look familiar. The four old friends retire to the coast for a week-long birthday celebration for Tim (McKay), who’s bent up about...

After announcing the 58 films in four categories that would be eligible for awards at Sundance, the film fest has now announced the next 57 movies to be screened this coming January. These 57 films are of course out of competition and will be included in Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. Most are big name projects from already established filmmakers and some have already made their way around film festival in 2010. The list includes Kevin Smith’s Red State, Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Submarine, I Saw the Devil (which had plenty of buzz at Tiff) and my most anticipated film of 2011, Hobo With a Shotgun.

Tons of high-profile film items for sale with star casts are, as I predicted, making the cut this year in the Premieres section. If I'm not mistaken, Fox Searchlight will use the fest to not only go shopping, but they'll be using Park City to launch Cedar Rapids and Win Win. With yesterday's Comp titles announcement, there appears to be a breakout commentary of an anti-church and anti-religion statement. We have Higher Ground, Martha Marcy May Marlene and we could add George Ratliff's Salvation Boulevard and Kevin Smith's Red State (see pic above) to the same discourse. Cedar Rapids /U.S.A. (Director: Miguel Arteta; Screenwriter: Phil Johnston) A wholesome and naive small-town Wisconsin man travels to big city Cedar Rapids, Iowa to represent his company at a regional insurance conference. Cast: Ed Helms, Sigourney Weaver, Alia Shawkat, John C. Reilly, Rob Corddry, Anne Heche. The Convincer /U.

Following yesterday's announcement of the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions, the Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the second part of their lineup, which includes the more starry-eyed Premieres section, the best-of-fests Spotlight section, the sure-to-be-culty Park City at Midnight section, the low-budget Next section, and the more experimental New Frontier section (an extension of New Frontier Program, the collection of video art installations which has already been noted here for playing James Franco's dramatic multimedia examination of "Three's Company.")
In addition to the return of filmmakers like "Chuck & Buck"'s Miguel Arteta, "Clockwatchers" director Jill Sprecher, Kevin Smith and "The Station Agent"'s Thomas McCarthy to Park City, the festival will also welcome less frequent or first-time Sundance attendees such as Hollywood types Al Pacino ("Son of No One") and Tobey Maguire ("The Details") and mumblecore alums Joe Swanberg ("Uncle Kent," which announced it's been...

Yesterday, when the 2011 Sundance Film Festival announced its full in competition line-up, a few eyebrows were raised about the somewhat surprising lack of star power in the year’s crop of films. Well, today, the festival announced its full out of competition slate, and a cavalcade of bold-faced tumbled forth. For one thing, from Jan. 20 through 30, 2011, Elizabeth Banks is going to be quite busy in Park City, Utah. Some highlights:
Ed Helms, Sigourney Weaver, and John C. Reilly in Cedar Rapids, about a small-town Wisconsin insurance salesman overwhelmed by the big city life at a regional insurance conference in Cedar Rapids,...

The Sundance Film Festival announced the in competition film line-up for the film festival running January 20th through January 30th 2011 in Park City, Utah.
Today the festival has announced the line-up for the non-competition films and there is one hell of a line-up! There are a ton of great films that will be premiering at the festival, and if you're going you have a lot of great films to choose from!
Each film has an incredible cast and a great story. These films include Cedar Rapids, about a man traveling to an insurance conference, featuring Ed Helms, John C. Reilly and Sigourney Weaver; Kevin Smith's Red State, about a group of misfits encounter extreme fundamentalism in Middle America; The Details, about domestic tensions spawned by raccoons with Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Banks, Laura Linney, Ray Liotta, Dennis Haysbert; I Melt With You, starring Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Rob Lowe, Christian McKay,...

Well, yesterday, we saw the full list of films in-competition; today, we get to see those titles that have been selected for Sundance 2011′s out-of-competition lineup.
And as I said with yesterday’s post, I’ll be going over the complete list, highlighting titles that need to be, taking into consideration this blog’s specific interests. The only title that immediately stands out is Brit John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses, which MsWOO positively reviewed, after seeing it at the London Film Festival in October. Read her review Here.
But look for future posts profiling any other titles I deem worthy. I’ve applied for press credentials to attend next year’s festival. I won’t know until the 23rd of this month, whether I’ve been granted press access or not. If I am, I will attend the festival; and if I’m not, well, I probably won’t.

Well, if the Competition titles at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival don't generate any early year Oscar buzz, I think it's safe to say the Out of Competition titles will. Several films that have already been seen and positively reviewed can be found in the fest's Spotlight Line-Up along with a batch of anticipated hopefuls in the Premiere Section.
Beginning with the festival's premieres, Miguel Arteta (Youth in Revolt) is bringing Cedar Rapids to Park City where it will debut before it hits theaters only a couple weeks later on February 11. "Big Love" co-producers, Jill and Karen Sprecher are bringing an impressive cast for their crime drama The Convincer. Jacob Aaron Estes's The Details, which was shot only a few miles from my house in the Queen Anne district of Seattle, arrives with Elizabeth Banks, Laura Linney and Tobey Maguire in tow.

Wednesday, the 2011 Sundance Film Festival announced the 58 films in four categories [1] that would be eligible for awards. Today, they've announced the next slice of their line up - 57 out of competition films in the Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. This is generally where you get many of the bigger name projects and this year is no exception. We already knew [2] that Kevin Smith's Red State would be on the list, but there's also Tom McCarthy's new film Win Win, Morgan Spurlock's documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, the highly buzzed-about Submarine, Fantastic Fest darling I Saw the Devil as well as Hobo With a Shotgun and a whole bunch more including films with Al Pacino, Tobey Maguire, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Paul Rudd and others. As we said yesterday, the announcement of the movies playing the 2011 Sundance Film Festival is like looking into our film futures.

Yesterday we revealed the in-competition line-up for this years Sundance Film Festival. Today the programmers have announced the second wave, the out-of-competition line-up. It includes six categories and you can check them all out below. We already knew Kevin Smith‘s Red State would be screening, as he announced on his podcast last night. The rest of this out-of-competition line-up is pretty unbelievable.
We get Cedar Rapids (from Youth In Revolt‘s Miguel Arteta), Mark Pellington‘s I Melt With You, My Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd, Tom McCarthy‘s Win Win, as well as Dito Montiel‘s third feature The Son of No One. We also have new documentaries by Morgan Spurlock and Eugene Jarecki. Some of my favorite Tiff films are also making an appearance, including Submarine (pictured above) and Meek’s Cutoff. Check it out below.

#55. I Melt With You - Mark Pellington The last time Mark Pellington was at Sundance, he showcased not one, but a pair of pics in the world preem of Henry Poole Is Here and he got to show the Cannes preemed U23D. This year, the filmmaker might be poised to bring his highly personal, "micro" budget film, I Melt With You which will definitely not play in the Next section, but should find a place in the U.S. Dramatic Comp. Starring an eclectic cast comprised of Carla Gugino, Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Arielle Kebbel, Sasha Grey, Rob Lowe and Christian McKay, written by Glenn Porter, this follows four college friends now in their forties who find themselves immersed in various stages and types of mid-life crises. * Producers: Rob Cowan and Norman Reiss(Ioncinema.com Preview Page // IMDb Link) ...

Almost a year ago today, I spoke to actor Thomas Jane about his directorial debut, "Dark Country" — a noir-fueled thriller with a scary, Hitchcock-style twist that was filmed entirely in digital 3-D. Starring Jane, Lauren German ("Hostel: Part II"), and Ron Perlman ("Hellboy"), "Dark Country" will receive not just one but two 3-D screenings attended by its director and lead actor at Long Beach Comic Con this Halloween weekend.
The veteran actor is currently enjoying the success of his HBO television series "Hung" (set to premiere its third season in 2011), but he took time out to chat with me about this weekend's "Dark Country" screenings, and remind the world that the film is not only his passion project, but also the very first fully digital, live-action 3-D movie.
MTV News: Tom, here we are again, talking about "Dark Country" right before Halloween. Last time around, the film had just been released on DVD.

At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features about a half dozen projects that are moments away from lensing and that we feel are worth signaling out. This August, we've got a good grouping of titles that are positioning themselves for a Cannes release next May. On the indie front, any hopes of seeing Lee Daniels' Selma go into production appear to be dashed, financing woes might pull the plug on the production despite this being a perfect opportunity, especially in today's climate, to re-introduce a film which has racism in the forefront. We are awaiting confirmation on a filmmaker from our American New Wave 25 profiles to confirm a start date this month, but three established veteran indie filmmakers will be commencing production shortly: Rodrigo García is looking to direct Glenn Close's Albert Nobbs project, Mark Pellington's low budget I Melt With You will...

It's a bit of a rarity that an adult film actress would successfully start to make herself legit in the some what cleaner mainstream movie world. Luckily that's the case for Sasha Grey. She's made that rough transition into the mainstream, starring last year in Steven Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience". Now she could be continuing her streak with a role in the Mark Pellington drama "I Melt With You"."Melt With You", written by newcomer Glenn Porter, revolves around three college friends who meet up at their summer reunion. The three of them then resurrect a pact that they promised to live, die and kill by. Grey will be taking on the role of the free-spirited girl named Raven who convinces the men that they'll only be happy through death.Principal photography commences next month in Northern California. However, Grey isn't the only new addition to the cast of...

Earlier we wrote about the upcoming Mark Pellington’s thriller I Melt With You, so you already know that Jeremy Piven and Thomas Jane have signed on to star in it.
Today, we’re here to announce that Rob Lowe will also be the part of the project that will follow “middle-aged guys dealing with their problems.”
I Melt With You is a project based on a Glenn Porter script that is (again) based on a story by Porter and Pellington which follows “the interconnecting lives of four men and focuses on the pain of the modern male psyche, deals with mortality, aging and friendship.”
At this moment not much is known about the whole project, but we learned that Lowe will play a doctor “struggling with deep personal loss and a growing drug addiction.”
Lowe is the third of a reported four central roles in the film, so we...
