Real-time thriller “Nightsleeper” has been acquired by French network TF1.
Starring Alexandra Roach (“The Light in the Hall”) and Joe Cole (“Gangs of London”), the six-episode thriller unfolds in real-time as a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London is hacked and events rapidly escalate on board, causing a government agency to frantically intervene.
“Can two people who’ve never met, one on the train and one not, work together to save the lives of its disparate group of passengers as the Heart of Britain overnight service hurtles towards what might quite literally be its final destination?” reads the logline.
The series, which is produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, was written by “Murdered For Being Different” scribe Nick Leather with Laura Grace writing episodes 4 and 5. It’s directed by Jamie Magnus Stone (“Doctor Who”) and John Hayes (“Dublin Murders”).
It will air in the U.

I first reviewed Green Room back in 2017 for my blog Wight Blood and gave it a score of 9/10. I don’t think I have watched it since so with this Second Sight 4k/Blu-ray release, I had the opportunity to see if it was just as good on second viewing.
The movie follows a punk band as they attempt to tour and book a last-minute gig at a neo-nazi bar with the promise of some decent money. They play the gig and attempt to leave as quickly as possible but after they witness something they shouldn’t have, things turn nasty and they get stuck in the green room with nowhere to go.

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier talks to us about the making of the 2015 survival thriller Green Room, which is getting a new disc release this month.
In October 2014, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier had a bit of a problem. Green Room, the follow-up to his micro-budget thriller, Blue Ruin, was nearing the start of shooting, but he still hadn’t managed to cast the role of Darcy – a club owner and leader of a group of rural Neo-Nazis. Most worryingly, as sets for the film were being built, Green Room’s financiers had threatened to withdraw funding if Saulnier couldn’t find a ‘name’ actor.
Fortunately for Saulnier, the script had been sent out to the legendary Patrick Stewart, and despite – or perhaps because of – the less-than-appealing nature of the Darcy character, he agreed to star at the last minute. “He kind of saved the movie,” Saulnier tells us almost a decade on.

“Peaky Blinders” breakout Joe Cole enjoyed “little moments of levity” in his upcoming show “Nightsleeper.”
“I play a lot of serious, moody characters. But I read this role and went: ‘This is close to me as a person.’ I could be free and use my life experience, everything I have been through. I try to have fun in life and bring it to the parts I play. I haven’t always been able to do it, because I am usually killing people or stabbing them,” he tells Variety.
These days, Cole wants to be “stimulated and challenged” as an actor.
“I am working on a film now, these are Russian filmmakers and they tell dark stories, but they do it with levity. They don’t relentlessly bang you on the head. The story itself is grim enough, so find the humor!,” he notes, also mentioning a recent turn in “A Small Light” about Miep Gies,...

Enough with the winter gloom: Feel-good shows are about to take over TV market London Screenings, as distributors echo Russell Crowe’s Maximus iconic words: “Are you not entertained?”
“Most platforms are looking for entertaining shows. Escapism is a big thing,” says Fremantle International CEO Jens Richter.

Beta Group’s chief distribution officer Oliver Bachert agrees – in a world challenged by many conflicts, watching something “accessible and easy” feels more appealing than ever.

Exclusive: Fremantle is taking a Love is Blind-esque Danish format to the London TV Screenings in which singletons try to find love using just sight and sound.
Fremantle label Strong has produced Sense of Attraction and the show will be shopped to potential buyers in the capital in a fortnight’s time.
In Sense of Attraction, singletons try to find true love using only two senses. But they can’t use the two senses at the same time, so when they see each other they can’t speak and when they speak they can’t see one another.
The show has shades of Netflix hit Love is Blind, in which single men and women become engaged before they have even seen each other. That smash format has aired for six seasons on Netflix and been remade in a number of territories.

Variety has a first look at “The Damned,” the upcoming psychological horror starring Odessa Young and Joe Cole.
From director Thordur Palsson (“The Valhalla Murders”) and writer Jamie Hannigan, the film, which shot in Iceland last year, follows Eva (Young), a 19th-century widow who is tasked with making an impossible choice when a ship sinks off the coast of her isolated fishing outpost in the middle of an especially cruel winter. According to the synopsis, “Eva and her crew must choose between rescuing the shipwrecked and prioritising their own survival. Facing the consequences of their choice and tormented by their guilt, the inhabitants wrestle with a mounting sense of dread and begin to believe they are all being punished for their choices.”
Alongside Young and Cole, the cast also includes Siobhan Finneran (“Happy Valley,” “The Stranger”), Rory McCann (“Game of Thrones,” “Slow West”), Turlough Convery (“Killing Eve,” “Belfast”), Lewis Gribben (“Somewhere Boy,...

This post contains spoilers for "Peaky Blinders."
Most of us are aware that the Peaky Blinders were a real gang that operated in the late 1800s in Birmingham, England, but Steven Knight's "Peaky Blinders" takes this real-life aspect and imbues it with extraordinarily intriguing drama, sprinkled with exaggerated historical events. As a result, the series makes for unforgettable television, especially due to the intricate, colorful characters that inhabit a world on the verge of change, forever plunged into chaos. While Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) is well-loved for his complex characterization and general badassery, there is another member of the Shelby family who is as conflicted and has proven to be a compelling deuteragonist in the BBC series. Arthur Shelby, played by Paul Anderson, might not be anyone's favorite Shelby, but he sure is a force to be reckoned with.
Aggressive and impulsive to the point of stupidity, Arthur wrestles with his incandescent rage,...

"It's not just about football... It's more than just kickin' a ball." The story of footballer Jermain Defoe is being told in a new documentary feature, coming to UK cinemas in February.
The latest sporting figure to be the subject of a feature documentary? That’s Jermain Defoe, the former football star who played for clubs such as West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Rangers and Portsmouth in a career that spanned nearly 25 years.
Defoe was awarded an OBE in 2018, for his work with the Jermain Defoe foundation, that supports vulnerable and homeless children.
The documentary feature has been directed by James Ross and produced by Naomi Notice. Defoe contributes to it as well, alongside names such as Sandra Defoe, Gemma Lowery (the mother of the late and inspirational youngster Bradley Lowery), Harry Redknapp, Joe Cole and Peter Crouch.
Kaleidoscope is distributing the film, which will be in UK cinemas on February 29th 2024. If it follows the usual pattern of these things,...

The British Independent Film Awards celebrated plenty of incredible films on Sunday, December 3 over here in London with “All of Us Strangers” winning seven awards including Best Picture.
The Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal film wasn’t the only picture to be highly lauded, however, as plenty of other movies were also nominated for and awarded with several gongs. “How to Have Sex” won Best Supporting Performance for Shaun Thomas (along with Mescal) and Best Lead Performance for Mia McKenna-Bruce while Molly Manning Walker was nominated for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Debut Director, and Best Debut Screenplay. She was also nominated for her work as the director of photography on Charlotte Regan’s “Scrapper.” I got caught up with several winners and nominees on the red carpet at the Bifas as well as the winners’ room.
First up, I spoke to Thomas, who was nominated for his supporting turn alongside co-star Samuel Bottomley.

Violent crime drama Gangs of London is back for a third series, the cast has been confirmed.
After revitalising action cinema with the two astonishing martial arts films in The Raid franchise, Gareth Evans turned to television, co-creating Gangs of London with Matt Flannery in 2019.
A sprawling crime saga, the show follows the Wallace family as they grapple to keep control of their criminal empire. And we’ve had two series of it so far, with plenty of memorable moments to talk about.
The show became known for its notoriously violent action scenes, which are as visceral and gory as anything seen in a big screen slasher. Unsurprisingly, given Evans’ involvement, the work that went into those scenes was really quite something. And now, with season three confirmed and on its way, we wait to see

Forget the fear of flying. In the upcoming six-episode thriller “Nightsleeper,” the real danger awaits on a train travelling from Glasgow to London.
“When we were developing the show, we got all these experts in one room and asked: ‘How do you hack a train?’ An hour later, they said: ‘This is scary. We could easily do it now, between ourselves’,” says writer Nick Leather.
“We will do for trains what ‘Jaws’ did for sharks.”
Produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films and set to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early 2024, “Nightsleeper” is directed by Jamie Magnus Stone and John Hayes.
While Abby Aysgarth (Alexandra Roach) at the U..K’s National Cyber Security Centre is trying her best to stop the train, some remaining passengers also join forces – including off-duty cop Joe Roag (“Peaky Blinders” actor Joe Cole). But they only have six hours and one satellite phone.

Bel Powley Says She Was ‘Blown Away by How Contemporary’ Making Holocaust Drama ‘A Small Light’ Felt
This story about Bel Powley and “A Small Light” first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

So playing Gies in the National Geographic limited series “A Small Light” was a daunting experience — but also a deeply rewarding one. “It’s so rare...
