Fockers who? Meet “The Zweiflers” instead: Brand new winners of Canneseries.
Created and showrun by David Hadda, the show picked up multiple awards at the French TV fest on Wednesday, including best series and music. Selected as a Variety Hot Pick earlier this month, “it’s destined to be billed as a Jewish ‘Succession’ set in contemporary Germany, with all the baggage that can bring to the table, Variety wrote.
That being said, its creator had another dysfunctional family on his mind.
“My biggest influence was ‘The Sopranos’ and I always said I wanted to do a Jewish ‘Sopranos’! The idea was to change the narrative from the victims’ perspective in Germany to a Jewish patriarch and Holocaust survivor who had lost everything – and everyone, and then came back to rebuild his life. That was empowering for me,” said Hadda.

The Killing star Sofie Gråbøl has reflected on how her Danish breakout series redefined “national and linguistic borders” when it came to TV viewing.
Gråbøl spoke with Deadline in the midst of her time leading the Canneseries jury, for which she is judging shows from the likes of China, Brazil and Sweden.
The Killing, which was a smash hit both locally in Denmark and around the world, airing for three seasons between 2007 and 2012 and spawning a U.S. remake, “was a defining moment and a visceral way of showing how TV series can be accessible for all of us,” she said.
“It was something we couldn’t imagine [at the time],” added Gråbøl. “That something so local from this small country could have such interest across the border. We had been so used to importing culture from other countries but suddenly those national and linguistic borders weren’t defined anymore.”

Yaya (played by Camryn Jones) just wants to walk to school with her boyfriend. Living on the South Side of Chicago in a house overflowing with family members, the only thing that gets the exhausted teen out of bed every morning is knowing Dre (Travis Wolfe Jr.) will be waiting on her stoop. The only issue: her protective brother, Mouse (Victor Musoni), doesn’t approve. He thinks her friends aren’t a good influence — they show up late to school too often, eat too much junk food, and don’t pay enough attention to their surroundings. Mouse, clearly, just wants his little sister to be safe, get good grades, and live a better life, but by intimidating Dre, he’s unwittingly snuffing out her one spark of joy — joy that manifests itself via her favorite hobby: dance.

Turning on real-life 1990s trans icon Cristina Ortiz, “Veneno” established Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo as leading LGBTQ directors in Spain.
In “La Mesías,” they bring their hallmark visceral sense of diversity to each and every scene and episode, which lends them their large distinction.
“We’re not very conscious of it, but you can see diversity in how each character reacts differently to trauma, as well as the genre mix and diversity of settings. It’s a bit like how we are; we like a lot of things and modes,” says Calvo.
In the series, protagonist Enric (Roger Casamajor) is eviscerated emotionally by his childhood trauma which involves his fanatically religious mother. In contrast Sister Irene (Macarena García) tries to make a new life. Enric escapes but is triggered into action when he sees his siblings on TV performing as a Christian music group.

★★★★☆ The Brothers Grimm's pitch black fairytale Snow White is transformed by the Flamenco rhythms of 1920s Spain in director Pablo Berger's sumptuous and beguiling Blancanieves (2012), out now on Collector's Edition DVD. An unabashed homage to the silent cinema of twenties Europe, Berger's film is a delightfully mischievous reinvention of this age-old fairytale. Last year saw two larger-than-life adaptations of the Snow White story - Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror and Rupert Sanders' angsty Snow White and the Huntsman - yet Berger's direction is far more outlandish and indirect than both aforementioned renditions.
Setting his version in Seville, Berger presents his audience with a silent, black and white tale of the daughter of famous bullfighter Carmenita (played as a child by Sofía Oria, and later by Macarena García), raised by an evil stepmother after her father is paralysed during a performance. Instead of seven dwarfs, we have six miniature bullfighters,...

Snow White is recast as a talented bullfighter in this wonderfully eerie and erotic silent film treat
Audiences are entitled to be suspicious of critics who start raving about another new silent film in black-and-white, so soon after the Oscar-winning success of Michel Hazanavicius's The Artist. Fad? Cinephile affectation? Maybe, but during the fuss over The Artist, the haute cinephile thing to say was that it was all nonsense compared to Aki Kaurismäki's 1999 silent film Juha. All I can say is that there's a flash of pure inspiration, unfakeable and unmistakable, in this extraordinarily enjoyable film, a silent-movie melodrama version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves set in southern Spain in 1910. It feels saturated with pleasure: it is extremely pleasurable to watch, and shows every sign of having been extremely pleasurable to make.

Chicago – The silent film, which was revived by the 2011 Best Picture Oscar winner “The Artist,” is honored again in the new film “Blancanieves.” This artful re-imagining of the Snow White story – set in Spanish bullfighting rings – cherishes the feel of silent film, and features clever composition.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The story in “Blancanieves” is not as strong as “The Artist,” and the Snow White reworking is heavy handed, but director Pablo Berger adds his own outrageous camera work and point-of-view, imbibing the film with both a smart aleck “wink” at the camera and an example of silent film if Orson Welles had been directing back in those days. “Blancanieves” is a passionate night at the movies, unfolding in the clean lines of old time aspect ratio (square rather than rectangular) and mood music that approximates emotions in a varied and expressive way. This is a must see for admirers of the silent film era,...

Not only is this great film Blancanieves, written and directed by Pablo Berger (Torremolinos), international sales agent 6 Sales' Marina Fuentes♀, opening theatrically in the U.S. on March 29 thanks to Cohen Media, it is the film we the jury at the 2013 Palm Springs International Film Festival awarded the Cine Latino Award And it has swept the Goyas (the Academy Award equivalent) in Spain. This film which I previously blogged about, is the film which took so long to make that The Artist, took its place in our own Academy Awards last year. Had this one only come first ... this is the real winner. It is a fairytale and much more; it depicts Spain and Seville in the time of fascism and leaves a tear upon the place.
**Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2012 San Sebastian Film Festival**
**Winner of Best Actress in a Narrative Feature at the 2012 San Sebastian Film Festival**

**Official Selection of the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival**
**Official Selection of the 2012 Warsaw International Film Festival**
Blancanieves, a re-working of the Brothers Grimm classic fairy tale "Snow White," is a breathtakingly beautiful film and a uniquely spirited homage to the black-and-white Golden Age of Europe's silent cinema. Set in a romanticized 1920s Seville, Berger's Snow White is Carmen (Macarena García), the daughter of a famous bull fighter, who lives under the tyrannical rule of her monstrous, evil stepmother, Encarna (Maribel Verdú). She escapes and joins a troupe of bullfighting dwarves, where her beauty and natural talent in the ring attract notices from the press. But soon the news reaches Encarna, who at last she knows where to find Carmen, and she prepares for the final showdown.

The film inspires a strong sense of cinematic nostalgia and has been rumored to be a tribute to 1920’s European silent films, liberally mixing humor and melodrama.

I know I've seen something atonishing, and I know I'm not ready to review it. "Cloud Atlas," by the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer, is a film of limitless imagination, breathtaking visuals and fearless scope. I have no idea what it's about. It interweaves six principal stories spanning centuries--three for sure, maybe four. It uses the same actors in most of those stories. The end credits,...
