Creative Assembly has announced a survival horror successor to Alien, Ridley Scott's brooding sci-fi classic
The cleaners have started to come round the Creative Assembly offices. I walk into a stark white bathroom where a paper towel dispenser's guts hang open below the hand dryer. It looks sad. I walk towards a cubicle.
Suddenly, the hand dryer goes off by itself and my chest clutches in at me like a claw. The hand dryer switches itself on and off and on and off. Each time I remind myself there's no one there.
The cleaner pops in. 'Sorry!' she says, and potters off.
Even as I write this I still feel frightened. There's a kind of bleak dread I felt on the Sevastopol, the remote space station featured in Alien: Isolation. It's a dread that lingers. The game's environment is beautiful, enchanting even. But it is unsettling. And the…...

In response to the presently on-going Bernard Herrmann series at Film Forum in New York honoring the composer's centennial, presented here is a selection of short soundtrack music cues by the composer, with brief observations, and information regarding their availability on CD, LP or other formats.
1. “Snow Picture” from Citizen Kane (1941)
It’s amazing to think that Bernard Herrmann scored his first film for Orson Welles, and his last for Martin Scorsese, thirty five years later (he died in his sleep, the evening after finishing the recording sessions for Taxi Driver). This very short cue begins during the Thatcher Library scene, with the Inquirer reporter, Thompson (William Alland), pouring over an immense volume, as the film transitions from over-the-shoulder shot to close-up pan across Thatcher’s handwritten recollections, into a flashback punctuated by a sudden burst of light and music. This musical movement through memory is achieved in less than thirty seconds.

Originally released in 2000 Battle Royale was a mini phenomenon in its native Japan and also overseas, aided somewhat by the controversy that surrounded it. When the Japanese censorship board, Eirin, checked a rough cut of the film they pointed out particular scenes that they felt should be cut, advice that director Kinji Fukasaku ignored. The film was therefore slapped with the R-15 certification, a rarity for a mainstream Japanese film and a certificate that prevented anyone under the age of 15 from seeing it.
The content of the film and its release coming just a year after the events in Columbine in 1999 insured that American distributors steered clear and it received no official release there. UK distributor Tartan picked up the film though and their now out of print DVD (they folded in 2008) did great business in exports to the Us. Following the folding of Tartan films, Arrow Video picked up...

Arrow Video isn't content with releasing a modern genre classic with just excellent picture and sound. Nope. They're one of the few companies left standing that seek to appease the die hard collector on a consistent basis, and we absolutely love them for it. And their Battle Royale collector's edition looks like it's their most ambitious offering yet.

Back in 2000 Battle Royale caused a bit of a stir with its uncompromising take on a Lord of the Flies scenario taking place in a near future Japan. I saw it at the cinema in 2001 and was both unprepared and completely blown away. Blackly comic and surprisingly affecting, it melded Japanese pop sensibilities, Us high school bickering and operatic violence to alarming effect. Appearing at a time when extreme Asian cinema was just emerging in the UK, it was an instant cult hit.
Revisiting Kinji Fukasaku's film now, it inevitably doesn't feel quite as fresh as it once did, and at worst seems rather dated. Of course it's still a hugely distinctive movie, but its flaws are a little clearer and its shock factor considerably lower.

The Saw 3D soundtrack. The last piece of the puzzle… is you… and Chester Bennington out of Linkin Park…
Yes that’s right folks, just when you were recovering from Justin Timberlake’s decent performance in The Social Network, Mr Shut-Up-When-i’m-Talking-To-You has thrown his hat into Hollywood’s increasingly ludicrous ring by portraying a man at the mercy of the killer Jigsaw in Saw 3D. One can only imagine the production meeting: ‘we got our ass kicked by Paranormal Activity last year… if only there was someone with no acting experience and lots of tattoos who could come along and save the production… if only Fred Durst wasn’t busy…” Next month: Wes Borland and that guy from Papa Roach are… Tango and Cash Reloaded.
So aside from the surprise appearance of the lead singer from one of the most soul-crushingly awful yet commercially successful American bands of all...
