As the old adage goes, a hero is only as good as their villain. In Batman's case, he's one of the greatest superheroes of all time, thanks in no small part to his arch-nemesis, the Joker. There aren't many classic Batman tales where the Clown Prince of Crime doesn't factor in some way. He's an astonishing character, depicted in various forms on the big and small screen. Who can forget Jack Nicholson's portrayal in 1989's "Batman," directed by Tim Burton? Or Cesar Romano's campy take in the classic "Batman" TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward? Heck, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix won Academy Awards for donning white makeup and the iconic purple suit in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and Todd Phillips' "Joker." There's no end to Joker's madness, and seeing the different iterations is always fascinating.
Perhaps the most memorable depiction of Joker comes from Mark Hamill,...

The Tonight Show‘s Donald Trump got an assist from Selina Meyer’s bagman on Wednesday.
Tony Hale reprised his role as Veep‘s Gary Walsh during an impeachment-themed cold open. In the sketch, Jimmy Fallon‘s Trump served as host of Impeachment After Dark Live!, “the only show that recaps the very mean, very nasty things Democrats said about me at today’s impeachment hearings,” he said. “Before we go any further, yes, I got this aftershow idea from Andy Cohen — or, as I call him, ‘Opposite Mike Pence.’

After taking a year off, HBO’s three-time Best Comedy Series champ “Veep” returned to the Emmy race for a chance at snagging a fourth victory for its farewell season. Gold Derby recently spoke with several of the show’s contenders, including stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Hale and Peter MacNichol, showrunner David Mandel and art directors Kimberly Wannop and David Smith, as well as actors Reid Scott and Timothy Simons. Scroll down and click on any name below to be taken to their full interview.
The role of Selina Meyer, a calculating politician who claws her way into the presidency, has helped Louis-Dreyfus break several Emmy records. Not only do her six consecutive Best Comedy Actress victories make Meyer the most rewarded character of all time, but combined with her wins for “Seinfeld” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” they tie Louis-Dreyfus with Cloris Leachman for the most awarded...

Tony Hale is on his sixth Best Comedy Supporting Actor Emmy nomination for playing Gary Walsh on “Veep,” the loyal bag man to Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Hale hopes to win his third Emmy for the role, and this year has submitted the series finale, aptly called “Veep.”
The episode largely takes place at the Democratic National Convention, where Selina is trying to garner enough delegates to become her party’s presidential nominee. The beginning of the episode sees a lot of meetings and negotiations. For most of those scenes, Gary is in the background, reacting to the developments and offering snarky remarks; he says Amy (Anna Chlumsky) reminds him “more of a childless aunt” to Selina.
In a low moment, Gary offers to help Selina, who screams at him, and he comically collapses to the floor. When Ben (Kevin Dunn) has a heart attack, Gary rushes to help.

Tony Hale is Emmy nominated one last time for playing Gary Walsh in “Veep,” a role that won him two in the past. He has been nominated for every single season of “Veep” since the second, racking up six bids in total.
Hale recently spoke with Gold Derby contributing editor Matt Noble about his lasting memories from “Veep,” the final outcome of his character and what remains in Gary’s bag. Watch the exclusive video interview above and read the complete transcript below.
SEEJulia Louis-Dreyfus Interview: ‘Veep’
Gold Derby: What’s your fondest memory of your work from “Veep”?
Tony Hale: That’s hard. It’s been a very nostalgic kind of year because I love those people so, so much. I really, really miss them. It’s funny ‘cause when I think back to the show, it’s not really scenes or anything that we did on the show.

HBO’s Hollywood satire Barry clearly has some Emmy voters in its audience: Half of this year’s six nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series hail from the sophomore series.
That includes TV icon Henry Winkler, who took home his first career Emmy last year in this category for his work as pompous acting coach Gene Cousineau. He’s joined this time around by two of his Barry co-stars: veteran actor Stephen Root, who finally nabbed his first-ever Emmy nod as Barry’s hitman handler Fuches; and relative newcomer Anthony Carrigan, who’s nominated for his scene-stealing...

“The last episode and last day we just needed to help each other keep it together,” reflects Tony Hale about wrapping “Veep.” In our exclusive webchat (watch the video above), he adds, “We were such a family. The last scene for each character, everyone would gather around the monitor to hug, laugh and cry. It was one big emotional roller-coaster.”
For seven seasons “Veep” covered the political misadventures of Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The biting satire was able to shine a light on a Washington D.C. run by cynical political ambition and zealous incompetence. The show has won three Emmys for Best Comedy Series. Hale played Gary Walsh, the devoted bag man to Selina, who was unhealthily obsessed with the President he served.

Sorry, Jimmy Kimmel — Julia Louis-Dreyfus saved the blooper reel from her favorite-ever “Veep” scene for the other Jimmy, Fallon. Or probably it just worked out that way.
On Thursday, the “Seinfeld” alum brought “The Tonight Show” outtakes from a classic and intimate Season 6 moment her character Selina Meyer shared with co-star Tony Hale’s Gary Walsh.
“I brought it as a gift,” Louis-Dreyfus told her latest late-night host. “Merry Christmas.”

In the clip, Meyer is uncharacteristically caring for Walsh after his heart attack, which followed her own heart attack earlier in the episode. In a rare moment of affection, Meyer makes a meal for Walsh, who is recovering in her basement. Unfortunately, the food — much like Gary and Selina earlier — has taken a turn for the worst.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is giving viewers a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of her all-time favorite Veep scenes with onscreen bagman Tony Hale — a moment that had her howling so hard, the pair struggled to get through the scene.
The moment came in an episode of the last season of the HBO political comedy when Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus) let Gary Walsh (Hale) stay in her home after the duo suffered near-simultaneous heart attacks.
In the season-six scene, Selina (who never cooks a meal) brings Gary a dinner she cobbled together from old leftovers and sits next to him in a twin bed....

Kara Hayward, Liana Liberato, Malin Akerman, Shea Whigham and Tony Hale are starring in the independent coming-of-age story “To the Stars.”
Producers announced Wednesday that production has wrapped in Oklahoma for “To The Stars,” with “Land Ho!” director Martha Stephens helming from a script by Shannon Bradley-Colleary. The story, set in the 1960s, centers on the powerful friendship forged between a shy farmer’s daughter (played by Hayward) and Liberato’s reckless new girl.
Lucas Zumann (“20th Century Women”), Jordana Spiro (“Ozark”), and Adelaide Clemens (“Rectify”) round out the cast.
“Land Ho!” premiered at Sundance, was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics, and won the John Cassavetes Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
“To the Stars” is produced by Kristin Mann (“Midnight Special”) and Laura D. Smith (“It Follows”) in partnership with Erik Rommesmo of Northern Lights Films, Carlos Cuscó and Emerson Machtus of Foton Pictures and Kerri Elder and Blake Elder of Rockhill Media.

Tony Hale won’t win a third Best Comedy Supporting Actor Emmy for “Veep” this year, since the series is sitting out the season, but he could take home a third career statuette for his other Emmy-winning comedy, “Arrested Development.” If Hale does manage to pull it off, he’d join Art Carney as the only multiple winners of the category for two different shows.
While the early years of the Emmys didn’t have genre-specific acting categories, Carney won the first three supporting actor awards: two for “The Jackie Gleason Show” and one for “The Honeymooners.” Since the latter sitcom was based on the popular recurring sketch of the same name on “The Jackie Gleason Show” and Carney played Gleason’s sidekick Ed Norton on both, along with other sketch characters on the variety show, Hale would be the first multiple winner for playing two different characters on two different,...

From playing Buster Bluth on Arrested Development to starring as Gary Walsh on Veep, Tony Hale has experienced a lot of success throughout his career. On Sunday, the Emmy-winning actor shined the spotlight on the woman who helped make it all possible by bringing his drama teacher Tina to the 2018 SAG Awards. Tina and Tony go way back. In fact, she mentored the TV star throughout both middle school and high school. "He was always very talented," Tina told E! News' Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet. "So, we knew that he would be somewhere like this, for sure." However, Tony remembered his early acting days a little bit differently. "I was...

It’s so, so very difficult to determine how long to stick with a series. Some shows get off to a bad start and later find their voice. Others start bad and get worse. Still others are sporadic in quality, for whatever creative reason.
But the list below is meant to help. Whether you’re looking for a new binge and want to know when a season will hit its peak, or you want to sample shows by seeing the best episode first, check out IndieWire’s ranking of the best TV episodes of 2017.
We don’t necessarily endorse starting with the best episodes — especially if it happens to be the season finale — but in a world of “too much TV,” there’s no wrong way to find the next great show. Ranked by episodic quality, these are the 25 best individual half-hours and hour-long entries of the 2017 season.

A version of this story on Tony Hale first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine. This year on “Veep,” we learned several things about Tony Hale‘s character, Gary Walsh, the unreasonably devoted aide to Julia Louis- Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer. We learned that Gary used to be a candy striper with a full head of hair, and that his father is an emotionally abusive boor who also happens to be deeply closeted, and that his mother likes to whisper in people’s ears, just as Gary does to Selina. Tony Hale learned those things,...

“Arrested Development” may have played with literal humor, but one of the show’s stars had experience with more innuendo-based comedy prior to the series. Before Tony Hale’s turn as the beloved Buster Bluth and the one-liner slinging Gary Walsh in “Veep,” he was acting in a commercial with a message that was hard to miss. Seen in the clip below as the partner of a woman who has found something that can satisfy her a bit better, Hale’s comedic timing still finds a way to shine. Check out Hale being taken aback (just like us) by a woman’s love for her shampoo in this old Herbal Essences commercial. Check out Backstage’s commercial audition listings!

Listen, there’s no way I was going to put this in the headline because the implication would raise people’s hopes too high, but I’ve got to say it, just once, for my own sanity: Selina and Gary slept together! They did! They really did!
Ok, no, not that way. The most intimate sexless couple on TV still haven’t done “it,” but they did fall asleep next to each other because of another special shared milestone: Selina had a heart attack, and Gary had his third!
Yeah, that’s less exciting. But it’s damn funny TV. Considering last week Selina made Gary check her food for poison by eating it himself, I didn’t expect their relationship to delve even deeper so soon. Episode 4 saw Selina discover that she’d had a heart attack, which caused Gary to have one, which led to Gary sleeping at the Meyer brownstone,...

Last week, two videos appeared online. In their own right, they’re short, funny insights into how “Veep” is made and what makes it capital-g Great! But after watching Episode 3, the videos also serve as an appetizer for the main course; a prologue to the main event; or, to use a painfully modern analogy, the teaser to the teaser trailer. HBO has finally answered the question that has been on the minds of “Veep” fans since the very beginning: What if Tony Hale and Julia-Louis Dreyfus swapped roles? Okay, it’s probably never come up, but it is still fun to imagine, what if?
Of course, it’d be difficult to imagine anybody in the role of Selina Meyer other than Louis-Dreyfus. After all, she’s received critical acclaim, a number of awards as the focal point of a successful six-season run on “Veep.”
The same could be said for Tony Hale whose portrayal as Selina’s incredibly loyal personal aide, Gary Walsh, has led to two Emmys. But as the video below shows, the two show a surprising ability to inhabit each others’ roles as they reenact a classic scene from Season 4 of the show.

The one-two punch of Ben telling Selina “It’s over” and Selina getting on a passenger plane with the common folk provided a summary of what Episode 1, “Omaha,” accomplished: We won’t see Selina in power again anytime soon (if ever), but we will get to watch her writhe in agony while adjusting to a “regular” life.
Between complaining over her five-figure weekly allowance and comparing her election defeat to “a frat house gang rape, except I didn’t even get a candlelight vigil,” the premiere focused on an ex-president still in recovery. Characters alluded to a mental breakdown — one we probably previewed in the waning moments of Season 5 — and Selina’s only joy came when she was planning her secret comeback.

Tony Hale is best known for playing Gary Walsh, Selina Meyer's inoffensive, bag-handling yes-man on HBO's Veep – but in real life, the comic actor isn't afraid to speak up about what grinds his gears. Rolling Stone asked Hale to vent about three things that piss him off in the latest installment of our ongoing video series.
First up on his list is "mean people," and the explanation is simple: "That sounds kind of contradictory, like I'm not liking mean people. But I don't understand mean people. Just be nice!" Hale...

HBO’s Veep has for five seasons mined the most excruciating, infuriating and heartbreaking aspects of politics for bitter laughs, which pretty much perfectly describes the state of the nation four days out from the blessed end of one of the most contentious elections in modern history. So it is that the Veep team has recorded a pretty funny video featuring star Julia Louis-Dreyfus in character as former President Selena Meyer, alongside Tony Hale as Gary Walsh, addressing…...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus already urged millennials to vote this week in a new video for NextGen Climate. Now days ahead of Election Day, “Veep’s” Selina Meyer has some solid advice for voters in a new 30-second clip.
“Hi, former President Selina Meyer here with a message for millennial voters,” says Louis-Dreyfus in character. “Apparently the reason I lost the election was that young people didn’t turn out to vote.”
She’s then interrupted by Tony Hale as his character Gary Walsh who reminds her that it was “old people” who didn’t come out to vote because “it was cold on Election Day.”

Tony Hale, aka Veep’s sycophantic Washington body man Gary Walsh, hovered behind Democratic VP candidate Tim Kaine tonight as the candidate met Late Show host Stephen Colbert in the green room, whispering helpful information. After two segments with Kaine, Colbert brought out Hale to ask him if Clinton and Kaine should watch HBO’s Veep for pointers. “Don’t watch it,” Hale advised. “There’s not good models of politics on my show….I think it’s more about office politics…...

A version of this story about Tony Hale also appears in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine. Tony Hale showed up in the No. 21 spot on TheWrap’s 2016 Emmys Hot List, but he would like us to say that his appearance on the list is a mistake, that we’re confused and really intended to single out a different actor named Tony Hayle or something. That’s what happened to his character, Gary Walsh, on an episode of the HBO series “Veep” this year: Gary stirred up jealousy and befuddlement among his fellow White House staffers when he.

The insults and one-liners on “Veep” come fast and furious, with every episode of HBO’s political satire packed with some of the funniest and most creative put-downs on television. No character is ever spared, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ titular lead. But Tony Hale, who plays her personal assistant, Gary Walsh, has a soft spot for the insults directed at one of his cast mates: Timothy Simons, whose perpetually upward-failing Jonah Ryan rarely goes a scene without getting a barb about his height or a nickname comparing him to a testicle. Hale told TheWrap that a line comparing Jonah to “the Washington monument,...

"We figured you'd guessed already — I know it's so obvious," said Catherine Meyer while coming out to her mother on Veep. "Didn't guess, didn't guess ... ah-amazing," stumbled Gary Walsh as Catherine's mother, President Selina Meyer, found herself, for once, at a total loss for words. That interaction perfectly sums up the first daughter, according to Sarah Sutherland, the actress who has played Catherine for five seasons on the Emmy-winning HBO series. Perpetually neglected, slighted and demeaned by her mother, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, it makes perfect sense that as the biggest moment in Catherine's young

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.
