Adam Devine, J.K. Simmons, Sam Richardson and Elsie Fisher will lend their voices to “Hypergalactic,” the CG animated family feature co-created by Naoto Oshima, best known for designing the original “Sonic the Hedgehog” for Sega, and Joseph Chou.
The English-language film, directed by David N. Weiss and now in post-production, marks the most ambition CG feature to date from Toei Animation. The Japanese studio was behind recent anime smash hits “The First Slam Dunk,” which grossed $279 million, and “One Piece Film: Red,” which has so far earned $246.6 million.
Charades are set to launch worldwide sales on “Hypergalatic” at Berlin’s European Film Market, alongside Iwashina Corporation founder Kevin Iwashina, who is also an advisor to Toei.

New Line’s new animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is moving from its April 12, 2024 release date to Dec. 13 next year.
The move stems from a chain-reaction of Warner Bros re-dating today, spurred by Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two going from Nov. 3 this year to March 15, 2024, which then pushed that financier and producer’s other title, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire from that date to April 12, 2024. Dune: Part Two had to move had to shift on account of the unavailability of its cast to promote during the actors strike.
War of the Rohirrim will now face off on its new December date against Sony’s reboot of The Karate Kid.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original New Line Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those Peter Jackson movies, in addition to his Hobbit trilogy,...

Guillermo del Toro's next film Pacific Rim is getting a lot of love from the fans these days, and it looks like it inspired Gale Anne Hurd and Valhalla Entertainment to finally move forward on their own giant robot vs. monster movie, a live-action adaptation of Toei Animation's Japanese anime Gaiking. Hurd is currently a producer on The Walking Dead series, and has worked on other films such as Terminator, Aliens, and The Incredible Hulk.
The story follows "a young man who is recruited to serve as the lead pilot for the Super Robot Gaiking. When Earth is threatened by an alien race intent on taking over the planet, he emerges as the only one who can pilot the massive robot. Together with his fellow co-pilots he must fight off the alien force in order to save mankind."

Gale Anne Hurd is one impressive lady. Not only is her company Valhalla Entertainment behind The Walking Dead, but she produced The Terminator, Terminator 2 and 3 and Aliens.
She's going back to her robot roots, working with Japan’s largest animation house Toei Animation and All Nippon Entertainment Works to develop Gaiking into a feature.
There’s no writer attached yet, but Hurd will produce along Toei’s Yoshi Ikezawa and Joseph Chou.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Gaiking was a short-lived Japanese animated series that ran in the mid-1970s. It became part of the toyline Shogun Warriors, popular in America in the late 1970s, and repurposed as cartoon series Force Five in the early 1980s.
The story tells of an alien invasion and how Earth creates giant piloted robots, known as mechas, to defend itself. The main character is a former baseball star who is recruited to pilot the biggest of the mechas.

During this past weekend at Wondercon 2012, Sony has premiere the first teaser trailer for the CG animated film Starship Troopers: Invasion and now its available online via IGN. It basically plays like a suit-up scene that shows off the cool hi-tech equipment. The visuals looks amazing. Director Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed: Ex Machina) brings his great sense for production designs and action direction into the fourth film installment of the military sci-fi franchise. Anthologies can often be either one of the best ways to explore a concept if executed properly. The idea explored here is Halo and the mythology surrounding it. For the first time, one work tries to take from all other source material like the Halo games, novels and comics in an effort to fully explain the world of Halo. In the process, it also helps actually add new substantial concepts to this much applauded franchise that show that the fight isn’t really over for Master Chief and the Spartans.
As seen before with Batman: Gotham Knight and The Animatrix, Halo Legends is an anthology of seven distinct and separate stories about the characters and ideas of Halo as seen through the eyes of various anime heavyweights. With writers and directors who had worked on everything from Cowboy Bebop to Bubblegum Crisis and Mask to Dragon Ball Z, the spectrum...

Do you remember, at the height of the "Matrix" craze, a spin-off DVD was released called "The Animatrix." It wasn't a movie; rather, "The Animatrix" served up a collection of nine animated short films, each telling a short story set within the "Matrix" universe from different writers/directors. It was a solid idea with, as you might expect, a bit of an uneven presentation. Some shorts are excellent, some are forgettable and some would have been better left out completely.
I'm referencing this 2003 release because "Halo Legends," released yesterday on Blu-ray and DVD, is much the same thing. "Halo" is of course one of the biggest video game franchises on the planet. "Legends" is a similar sort of short film collection, but with a few notable differences: the contributors all hail from the anime world and none of the stories fit comfortably within the "Halo" canon established by the games and the books.

Leading this week’s eclectic pack is a disc I never really expected to see, but here it is nonetheless. Halo Legends is a collection of animated vignettes culled from the universe of the popular X-box game and brought to life by Japanese animators. The result is something very similar to The Animatrix or the Batman: Gotham Knight anthologies from a few years back. The animation and storytelling styles vary, but with Frank O’Connor overseeing most of what goes on here, true Halo fans have little to worry about. The Flood, the Elite,...

A cheer to the folks at io9 who caught Anime News Network's recent update about the long-awaited live-action adaptation of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. In an interview with the producer of Halo Legends, Joseph Chou, Ann found out that not only is the project still alive but Chou is currently working with a producer and studio who understand the full scope of the project. According to Ann, "Chou mentioned that there is a lot of paperwork to clear, but 'once that's resolved, I think it would be on the fast track, so we're hoping that it'll start moving even next year.'" In the interview, Chou also explains why the project dropped off of people's radar to begin with and how difficult it's been marketing it to Hollywood studios. It's been more than six years since it was first announced that a live-action adaptation of the incredibly successful Japanese anime and manga property Neon Genesis Evangelion would be making its way to the silver screen, but according to producer Joseph Chou (Appleseed: Ex Machina) the project is still "very active" and could go into production as early as next year.
The Evangelion franchise is a collection of media properties owned by anime studio Gainax that has generated more than $16 billion since debuting in 1995. The central story revolves around the Nerv paramilitary organization's use of gigantic humanoid tanks or "mechas" to repel an invasion of monstrous creatures ("Angels") that threatens to bring about a worldwide apocalypse.
In comments to Ann, Chou blamed excessive legal red tape and the anime market crash for the project's delay, but also said the complexity of the story made Evangelion difficult to sell to Hollywood studios.

Brace yourself for the next cinematic masterpiece of massacre. Movieset has release an on-set video for the live-action adaptation of the video game franchise King of Fighters which reveal some of the actors in the cast talking about their respective role. There is also a little introduction to the popular fighting game and an interview with Fist of Legend director Gordan Chan and producer Joseph Chou where they discuss the process of translating the property into a “good movie” rather than just a “video game movie.” Ha, this should be interesting. Here’s the synopsis:
A stylish, high-octane, live action feature based on the highly successful video game franchise, in which the last surviving descendants of three legendary clans are continuously transported to other dimensions to test their martial arts skills against an evil force that seeks to invade and infect the real world.
The film is currently in post-production.
