Earlier this year, BBC made a groundbreaking announcement when it revealed “Broadchurch” actress Jodie Whitaker would be the new lead on “Doctor Who,” making her the first female doctor since the series first began over 50 years ago. The news was a cause for celebration, but of course a certain section of the fandom was not too pleased the show was making a gender switch. Within hours of the announcement, the hashtags #NotMyDoctor and #NurseWho became the official slogans of the opposition. The months since have seen the BBC and previous Doctors defend Whitaker, and you can count fellow BBC favorite Benedict Cumberbatch among her most vocal supporters.

Black Mirror is a show about holding a mirror to society, and making sure we see the dark side. With a focus on technology Black Mirror: Season 3 has moments of not only being terrifying but also quite beautiful, making one of the episodes something special.
Nosedive
Nosedive stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Lacie in a world where social status is decided by your score online. Fighting to hit the bigtime she soon becomes a victim of her own need for affirmation. A good start to the season, Nosedive is more thought-provoking rather than scary. In a society that feels futuristic but all too current, the more focused we become on Social Media and acceptance of strangers it’s scary that it could be taken to the limits we see in Nosedive.

When “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones spoke with IndieWire about the show’s upcoming move to Netflix, both felt inhibited by a platform they felt would only expand the boundaries they could push the show. “It’s so different to a network…you don’t have restrictions in terms of censorship, or duration, or ad breaks,” said Brooker. The result: “you sort of can just feel the story more,” added Jones. No wonder the new stories look so damn good, as evidenced by the new Season 3 trailer, exclusively premiered by Entertainment Weekly.

“Finding Neverland” turned the creation of “Peter Pan” into an Oscar-nominated drama back in 2004, and Fox Searchlight is surely hoping that’s the case for its upcoming A.A. Milne biopic. The author created the children’s classic “Winnie the Pooh,” and he’ll be the subject of the untitled drama that will also focus on the coming-of-age of Milne’s son, Christopher Robbin. Fox Searchlight has announced production is officially underway in Oxfordshire, Surrey, East Sussex and London, and some new first look photos have debuted on USA Today to mark the occasion.

For those of you who are fans of the Black Mirror series, we’ve got titles and story details on the six new episodes being released. There are no spoilers here, just a basic plot of each episode, and it looks like we’re in for another very interesting season.
Black Mirror is a pretty messed up series, which is what makes it so fascinating. You never really know what to expect until you actually watch the episode. EW recently interviewed series creator Charlie Brooker, and he offered them plenty of information. You can find the breakdown of each episode that they offer below:
Nosedive
We love this premise: An insecure office worker (Bryce Dallas Howard) lives in a world in which everyone obsessively ranks and rates every tiny social interaction. She thinks she finally may have found a way to rank alongside her friend (Alice Eve), who’s one of society’s elites.

Fed up of big blockbusters right now? Here are some smaller movie treats to be found in August in UK cinemas...
Around this time of the year, we like to shine a spotlight on the slightly smaller films coming out after most of the box office juggernauts have been and gone. But with each annual feature, we've noticed that the year is filling up with blockbusters more and more. The year's first comic book movie was February's Deadpool, a surprise box office smash and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice got 2016's blockbuster season started much earlier than usual.
We're late enough in this elongated season that August will find the blockbuster schedule repeating itself - Ben Affleck's Batman will be back on screen for a cameo in DC Movies' Suicide Squad, Disney follows The Jungle Book with a live-action remake of Pete's Dragon, and Ricky Gervais...

What made Trainspotting so special? We take a look back at Danny Boyle's classic, as it heads towards its 20th birthday...
Trainspotting, by Irvine Welsh, was first published in 1993. The novel grew from a series of short stories into a collection of non-linear connected vignettes based around a group of heroin addicts from Leith and their acquaintances. Parts of the novel – which grew from Welsh's diaries after being inspired by the early Nineties rave scene – were published in a variety of journals and pamphlets across Scotland, including New Writing Scotland and Rebel Inc. One of these publishers passed on the work to Secker & Warburg, who published it despite not feeling it had much commercial value (though they had previously put out works by Orwell, Kafka, and Simone de Beauvoir).

Korean director Bong Joon-ho caught international attention with his 2006 monster movie, The Host, before making his English-language debut with the 2013 sci-fi dystopia, Snowpiercer.
The director’s next film is called Okja, and it’s a very different breed of monster flick from The Host; in it, a “country girl” strikes up a friendship a “bulky animal with a mild and kind spirit”.
“I want to depict the two characters’ bizarre journey and adventure across the tough world in an original fashion,” Bong says, according to Variety.
The trade paper also reports that Bong’s film will be co-produced by Brad Pitt’s company Plan B, while Netflix will stump up the project’s $50m budget. It’s a deal that should prove fruitful for both parties if everything pans out; the...

In 2013, Digital Spy has embraced all that UK and Us television has to offer - from the very best of comedy and drama, to the merely middling, to the absolute stinkers.
But now it's time to celebrate only the finest cuts - it's our top TV shows of the year, continuing now with 20-16.
20. New Girl
Funny and warm, New Girl has always been a show in flux - starting life as a vehicle for Zooey Deschanel, it gradually transformed into an ensemble show to make better use of its supporting cast, including season one's standout - Max Greenfield's scene-stealing Schmidt.
Heading into its second season, the show continued to change and grow and, while Schmidt still provided plenty of laughs, in 2013 New Girl was all about Jake Johnson's slobbish, simple but utterly endearing Nick Miller and - in particular - his on-off romance with Deschanel's Jess. In many ways,...

The fourth season of HBO’s mob drama “Boardwalk Empire” ends this Sunday. It’s an engrossing conclusion that brings heartbreak, tragedy and left-turn surprises you probably wouldn’t have expected. You’ll have to tune in Sunday night for more, but trust us when we say the underrated show is doing some of its best work this season and it’s must-watch TV in general, with one of the best casts on television right now (Steve Buscemi, Michael Shannon, Jeffrey Wright, Michael K. Williams, Kelly McDonald, Shea Whigham, Michael Stuhlbarg and many, many more). “Boardwalk Empire” was of course created and conceived by Terrence Winter, the former “Sopranos” writer/producer turned showrunner and writer of this first-rate mob period drama. And “Boardwalk Empire” came to Winter via Martin Scorsese, who essentially gave Winter the non-fiction book “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City” and said,...

Cable TV and its alpha-males are certainly enjoying a surge in quality, but they're still no match for the great directors of film
The testosterone comes off Brett Martin's new book, Difficult Men: Behind the Scenes of a Creative Revolution, like wafts of Brut. A short, stocky account of the rise of such shows as The Sopranos, The Wire, The Breaking Bad, Mad Men, it comes with the muscular thesis that cable TV has "become the significant American art form of the first decade of the 21st century, the equivalent of what the films of Scorsese, Altman, Coppola, and others had been to the 1970s or the novels of Updike, Roth. And Mailer had been to the 1960s." You see? Now that's what I call a thesis: beefy with name-drops, and a cultural frame of reference that could stun a herd of bison at 30 paces.

Boardwalk Empire Episode 3.09 ‘A Milkmaid’s Lot’
Written by: Rolin Jones
Directed by: Ed Bianchi
Airs Sunday 9.00pm Est on HBO
Three episodes out and we’re building for the season finale. This is always a difficult time for a series fan. The writers have to keep the big plot twists both secret, but also completely explicable in terms of what has gone before. This often leads to shows that are masterclasses in fudging and uncertainty. Sentences are started and not finished. Events are left dangling like misplaced participles. Decisions are made but in such a way that nothing has really been decided.
This, along with the slowing of the story to a snail’s crawl, can be frustrating. But I’m guessing the finale will make the wait worthwhile.
Currently, we have Nucky suffering a horrible reaction to the explosion which caused the death of his girlfriend Billie. He’s so traumatised,...

Keira Knightley is back in a period drama, this time as Russian aristocrat Anna Karenina in the 19th Century. Based on the famous book by Leo Tolstoy, Anna takes up an affair with Count Vronsky played by Kick Ass' Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and in this clip, Anna says good-bye to her lover in a scene reminiscent of Dr. Zhivago.
Keira Knightley seems to gravitate to period dramas and playing women in dangerous liaisons in films such as Pride & Prejudice, The Duchess, and A Dangerous Method. The Pirates of the Caribbean actress re-teams with Anna Karenina director Joe Wright after appearing in his previous period pieces Atonement (2007) and Pride & Prejudice (2005). The first and last thing to say about Brave, the new Disney-Pixar animation, is that it’s beautiful. For the first few minutes I was happy just to look at the lighting, the colours, and the landscapes. On a technical level it is without fault; one imagines a good proportion of the production time was dedicated to perfecting the wind, the rain, the grass and the heroine’s red, curly hair. Pixar has gone from strength to strength in this regard, and it’s almost too easily taken for granted that their visuals, from the space ballet of Wall-e to the underwater world of Finding Nemo, are incredible. The love and craft that go into these images, though, should not be overlooked, and “Brave” looks as good as any Pixar movie yet made; I do not say that lightly.

Family films triumphed at the box-office with "Brave" and "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" taking in the No. 1 and 2 spots respectively. "Brave," Disney/Pixar's first female heroine defied gravity and landed at the top spot with $66.7 million continuing Pixar's record of opening films at No. 1. Two big films are opening this weekend, we have .Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. for action fans and .Brave. for the entire family. .Abraham Lincoln. is based on Seth Grahame-Smith.s book (he also wrote the screenplay) and Benjamin Walker stars as our beloved 16th President who moonlights as a vampire slayer. From .Wanted.s. Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Tim Burton, .Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. has a head-scratching premise that you have to believe in order to enjoy the film.
.Brave. features the first ever female heroine in the Disney/Pixar cannon. And I say, it.s about darn time! Kelly McDonald voiced the lead role of Merida, a reluctant princess who wants to choose her own path in life. Emma Thompson voiced the Queen Mother, and for the first time, Disney/Pixar focuses on a mother-daughter relationship instead of the usual father/son drama.

Plot: Merida (Kelly McDonald) is a fiercely independent Scottish princess, forced by her inflexible mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) to choose a suitor from the three clans that help her father, King Fergus (Billy Connolly) rule the land. Desperate, she seeks out a witch for help, but soon regrets her decision. Review: Those of you who were bitterly disappointed by the surprisingly manic Cars 2 will be happy to know that Brave is indeed a return to form by Pixar; a studio whose...

If you're only going to shoot a couple of movies in one year, making them with Ridley Scott and Pedro Almodovar is not a bad way to go, and that seems to be the game plan for Penelope Cruz.
First up, after rumors of her casting first cropped up this spring, Deadline reports that Cruz has made it official, signing on to star in Ridley Scott's "The Counselor." Penned by Cormac McCarthy, and featuring an insanely stacked cast including Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Cruz's husband Javier Bardem, the story centers on the titular character who tries to make some quick money through a drug deal, with things going terribly wrong in the process. No word yet on her role, but by process of elmination, it seems she's taken the smaller part of Laura, the counselor's fiancé. Size wise, it's about the equivalent of Kelly McDonald's...

A prominent politician’s researcher falls in front of a subway car. A black youth is killed in a suspected drug-related shooting. It will later be revealed that they shared a brief cell phone conversation the morning of their demises. When Stephen Collins, the politician in question, is notified of the tragedy that has befallen his aide the grief-ridden response he produces sets off alarm bells amongst the press, one of whom is The Herald journalist Cal McCaffery, Mr. Collin’s former campaign manager. Cal soon discovers that the connection between the deceased involves a dubious silver briefcase, which is when instinct tells him that there is more than just a story here. And boy will he be proven right.

Honestly, if I was forced to judge Summer 2012 at first glance, I would say it was pretty weak. Compared to 2011 and 2010, there's just not as many movies to look forward to. While it seems easy to write off this Summer as a dud, I have three reasons why it might actually be awesome; The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, and Prometheus. Honestly, that's all Summer 2012 needs in order to be one for the history books. Even then, there's still more than enough films to warrant your attention this summer. To help you sort through them all, we've once again compiled all the most interesting films of the season into four easy to read, informative guides. For the next four days, we'll take you on a journey through the best cinema has to offer in Summer 2012. Welcome to our Summer 2012 Movie Guide! Today, we will focus on June 2012, one of the biggest months of the year.

Disney Pixar’s upcoming animated adventure, Brave, will dare “impetuous” princess and skilled archer, Merida, to change her fate. Is she up to the challenge? We’ll find out come June 22nd. Until then you can enjoy the latest official poster art. As if Pixar’s first female hero wasn’t exciting enough, the art in this one continues to dazzle.
The secrets and mystery of the forest lay all around Merida in this poster, illustrated in a deep, misty blue-green. Her amazing, wild red tresses only stand out all the more for it. You can also clearly see her big green eyes and her trusty bow and arrow.
Kelly McDonald of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part two, and Boardwalk Empire will voice the feisty princess. The film will be available in 3D. Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, and Julie Walters also lend...

Hey look, it’s an edition of This Week in Blu-ray. We’d bet you didn’t see that coming, did you? Anyway, it’s back to the grind with plenty of great new Blu-ray releases to talk about. Everything from one of the best shows on television to Brad Pitt revolutionizing the game of baseball to a few releases from previous weeks that we’re sad to have missed. This includes, of course, a release from last week that has us developing a severe case of mysophobia. Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season It has taken HBO something like forever to get their premiere drama out on Blu-ray and DVD, but the story of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) and his power struggles at the top of 1920s Atlantic City is more than worth the wait. From an all-star cast led by Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Michael Shannon and Kelly McDonald (alongside Paz de la Huerta’s...

Boardwalk Empire – the star-studded prohibition era drama from HBO – returned to our television screens with a bang this past weekend. The show seems to have found its footing right out of the gate, and is at its well-acted, violent, multi-faceted best in this season’s opening episode – titled “21” for the year portrayed (1921).
When last season closed, Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) had just won the re-election for his party and superficially seemed to have consolidated his hold on booze distribution and political power in Atlantic City. However, a re-invigorated former boss – the Commodore (Dabney Coleman) – had enlisted Nucky’s brother Eli (Shea Whigham) and his protege Jimmy (Michael Pitt) in a conspiracy to overthrow Nucky. In this season’s first episode, the Commodore and his cronies make their first moves to attack Nucky’s lucrative position of power.

Why the brothers Coen, that's who. In their almost thirty year career, Joel and Ethan Coen have shown impeccable taste when casting their leading ladies. I haven't come here to bury Michael Bay's ladies. What is apparent, however, is that Bay is looking to cast pure eye candy. He's got a thing for luscious lips and talent seems to be a bit of an afterthought. Sometimes he lucks out, I have no beef with Gabrielle Union, Liv Tyler has a wealth of Empire Records cred and Kate Beckinsale can be good even if she was wooden and alarmingly orange in Pearl Harbor. I get it, Bay is casting for a different type of movie. As Shia LeBeouf recently said, "Mike films women in a way that appeals to a 16-year-old sexuality. It's summer. It's Michael's style." And, hey, I'm not going to call it sexist, per se. It's not like LeBeouf or Josh Duhamel,...

This year's Supporting Drama Actress race will include at least two new names as Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men") moves up to lead and Rose Byrne, a two-time nominee for "Damages," didn't appear in any new episodes during the Emmy eligibility period. Last year, Archie Panjabi was the surprise winner for her role as Kalinda Sharma on "The Good Wife" over Emmy favorites like co-star Christine Baranski and Sharon Gless ("Burn Notice"). She could well repeat as she has a strong pool of episodes from which to choose her Emmy tape. Baranski, Gless and Christina Hendricks ("Mad Men") are likely to contend again as well. Newcomers to this race could include: Kelly McDonald ("Boardwalk Empire"), a stand-out among that stellar cast, TV vet Michelle Forbes ("The Killing") who might finally have a role that resonates with Emmy voters, and two-time Oscar nominee Debra Winger ("In Treatment"). ...

"Every 30 seconds, a Latino turns 18 years old." Marketers, take note.
Univision, the Spanish-language network, outperformed NBC in primetime last week, which makes twice in four weeks that it achieved the feat against the so-called "Big Four"--ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS. Univision is also claiming that on half of the nights in Q1 of this year, it garnered more viewers in the choice 18-49 demographic than NBC, reports the Los Angeles Times. (NBC, for its part, owns Telemundo, a Univision Competitor.)
Who should be paying particular attention here? Advertisers, of course. We reached out to Kelly McDonald, author of How to Market to People Not Like You: Know It or Blow It Rules for Reaching Diverse Customers, for some insights.
What are some statistics brands and advertisers should be aware of?
The 2010 census shows that there are now more than 50 million Hispanics in the U.S. Every 30 seconds, a Latino turns 18 years old.

This Disney princess isn't waiting around for Prince Charming. That's the sense we're getting from new concept art for Pixar's upcoming June 2012 release Brave, set in the magical and mysterious realm in the Scottish Highlands. In the unbeatable company's 13th film, young Merida, the daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor, is an ace archer and so determined to do her own thing that she gets herself and the kingdom in a heap of trouble. Besides reminding us that 2012 will be the year of the young woman with a bow and arrow (see: The Hunger Games), Brave looks to be hoot with the voice talents of Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Kevin McKidd and Craig Ferguson, as well as Kelly McDonald as...

Pixar should feel pretty comfortable doing what they'd like from atop their movie studio throne -- over 15 years they've pocketed 26 Academy Awards and critic raves across the board -- but even they like a challenge. For their next project, the animation masterminds have taken a page from Papa Disney's playbook, tackling their very first fairy tale, "Brave."
Entertainment Weekly has a first look at production art for Pixar's 13th film, which is set in the Scottish Highlands and tells the tale of a princess, Merida, who defies her parents' sacred rituals and sends the kingdom into a shambles.
The details of Merida's adventure are scarce, but we do know that she's a skilled archer and will run into a host of characters. Included are a Wise Woman, who will grant her a important wish, and a couple of funny Lords who live in the kingdom. When it was first announced...

Scottish actress Kelly McDonald has replaced Reese Witherspoon as the lead character in Pixar’s animated feature, Brave, due out in the summer of 2012. The current Us release date is pegged for June.
The film has also got a new co-director, Mark Andrews, who’ll be joining Brenda Chapman in bringing this to our screens. Along with this salient casting news three art stills show off the conceptual ideas and rough style of the visuals. Mark Andrews gave a bit of detail about the Pixar flick:
“Brave’ is an epic adventure chock-full of action, humor and heart. There’s no more perfect setting for this powerful tale than the dark and rugged Scottish Highlands. Imagine: magic, mystery and danger—all set within a haunting and beautiful landscape. It’s like nothing you’ve seen before from Pixar.”
Might be an interesting sort of film and darker than their usual fare.

It has been 15 years since Danny Boyle’s seminal movie Trainspotting, based on Irvine Welsh’s book, was released and last week I attended a special screening of the film in Edinburgh put together by Vw’s ‘See Film Differently’ project. In the past few months they have also arranged screenings of An American Werewolf in London in London Zoo and Get Carter in a Newcastle Racecourse, both locations memorably featured in their individual films.
The Trainspotting screening was held at the Royal Scottish Academy, a gallery in the city centre that can be spotted in the background of one shot in the movie.
There was something slightly perverse about watching a movie like Trainspotting in an art gallery, it being the type of place that would turn away some or all of the characters from the movie at the door. Furthermore while the famous opening scene was filmed on...

Boy, did he hit the nail on the head! It's impossible to watch a TV show about mobsters in the Jazz age and beyond without making comparisons to the established iconography of the genre. It was clear from the opening scene in "Boardwalk Empire" that Martin Scorsese was well aware of this and chose to insert some mini-homages along the way rather than risk looking too derivative. Some of them worked: the opening scene with the mist and the tension on the captain's face evoked the same cold strained feel of the famous woods scene in Miller's Crossing. However, he took it a little too far in the penultimate sequence that moved back and forth between New Jersey and Chicago, with operatic crescendos and a bit too much in-your-face Godfatherness.
As with most premieres, the opening episode of "Boardwalk Empire" spent much of its time introducing us to the key characters and establishing our baseline understanding of the relationships among them.

Ewan McGregor has revealed that he fought with his wife over his famous sex scene in Trainspotting. The actor told Parade that his partner Eve is usually fine with him shooting explicit love scenes but admitted that they fell out over his on-screen clinch with Kelly McDonald in Danny Boyle's 1996 movie. McGregor said: "I have done quite a few sex scenes in my career. But my wife has always been okay with them except when she was pregnant with our first daughter, Clara, and I went off to do the sex scene in Trainspotting. "Hormonally, she was all over the place. We had a massive fight about it. But that's the only time it's ever been an issue. "Look, it's a weird situation to be seeing (more)...

You know what I want to see? A TV show starring Steve Buscemi based on a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese. Guess what we'll all get to see very soon: a 1920's period show set in Atlantic City, starring Buscemi, based on a Scorsese pilot. Everybody wins, or at least everyone with HBO. Variety reports that HBO has picked up eleven episodes of Boardwalk Empire, which features Buscemi as Nucky Johnson (hey, it's the '20s!), a businessman turned rum runner during Prohibition. Also in the cast are Michael Shannon, Michael Kenneth Williams, Dabney Coleman (sorry, Dabney Fucking Coleman), Kelly McDonald and Michael Pitt. Whenever I mention Pitt I find that a lot of people hold serious ire towards the guy, but I actually like him. And to see him get the chance to develop a character in the context of a series like this should be really interesting. And...
