We're sure by now you've heard of the wondrous show known as Monsterpalooza. Simply put, it's pure magic. This gathering has the uncanny power to turn any fan, regardless of how jaded he or she may be, into an instant child experiencing the glory of monsters for the first time.
To say it's an experience is an understatement. So powerful is the show that even Hollywood legends show up just to wander around and have a great time. Case in point: genre royalty and Oscar winner Dick Smith. Smith rarely, if ever, makes appearances like this, but he, too, cannot resist the allure and fun of Monsterpalooza. Luckily there was a camera on hand at the last show to capture part of the man's surprise visit. It's just heartwarming stuff.
Mad genius and showrunner Eliot Brodsky has decided to treat fans to even more mayhem with (what else?) Son of Monsterpalooza!

Emce Toys is teaming with Monsterpalooza horror convention in Burbank on a new series of handcrafted Mego-style exclusive Jack Pierce action figures, set for release at the event in April. The limited edition figures are 8″ tall, and arrive with a cloth barber’s tunic and “likeness-accurate” head sculpt. A small run of mini replicas of Pierce’s famous barber’s chair will also be produced for the show.
“With six, going on eight Mego-scale Universal Monsters we’ve designed for Diamond Select Toys, this is the perfect unique addition to any collectors’ Mego Monsters display,” said Joe Sena, president of Fourth Castle Micromedia, the parent company of Emce Toys. Diamond Select Toys has released four Emce-designed Mego monsters: Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Mummy and Dracula. Two more, the Bride of Frankenstein and the Creature from the Black Lagoon, were recently unveiled at the New York Toy Fair. Prototypes of the...

Emce Toys, the brand that revived the classic Mego style 1/9-scale “retro cloth” action figures of the 1970s, is partnering with the Monsterpalooza convention to create limited edition handcrafted Mego-scale exclusives for the April 2012 event in Burbank, California.
To honor legendary Universal makeup maestro Jack Pierce, Emce is creating a very small number of 8” tall figures of Pierce, complete with barber’s tunic and likeness-accurate head sculpt. An even smaller number of Mego-scale replicas of Pierce’s famous makeup chair will be created as well. Pierce’s head was sculpted by Mike Hill, world renowned portrait sculptor and artist whose career runs the gamut from privately commissioned work to Hollywood blockbusters.
Monsterpalooza fans know Hill from his hyper-realistic statue of Boris Karloff being made up in Jack Pierce’s chair (on display

For our money there's no greater convention in the entire world than Eliot Brodsky's incredible Monsterpalooza, is held each year in Los Angeles. What sets it apart from the rest is that it isn't about meeting celebrities (though there are plenty on hand both signing and just walking around enjoying the show) and getting autographs. This show is about one thing and one thing only: Monsters! Which is why we're nothing short of ecstatic that Brodsky is looking to expand his universe with Monsterpalooza Magazine.

In a departure from my long-standing and hopefully generally objective approach to genre journalism, in regard to this past weekend’s Monsterpalooza 3 (see our extensive photo gallery below), I’d like to comment, “Omfg this show is the most fucking amazing horror convention anyone has ever attended!”
Orchestrated by Eliot Brodsky, La’s premier horror convention Monsterpalooza ran April 8-10 at the Marriott Burbank Convention Center in Burbank, California, and, given the word of mouth generated by last year’s fantastic show, continued to increase its horrific momentum. The annual celebration of make-up effects again featured its fan-favorite monster museum, which showcased the practical works of dozens of fx artists, as well as a packed and extensive dealer room, in-depth makeup demonstrations, appearances by myriad notable artists (including Glenn Hetrick, Mike Hill, Jeff Yagher, David Whitford, The Chiodo Brothers, John Goodwin, Mike Westmore and dozens more) and the inclusion of...

Few things things remind us why we love La as much as Monsterpalooza. Founder Eliot Brodsky's annual celebration of all things monster and makeup-effects related hits Burbank at this time every year, prompting fans, dealers, creators, journalists, and the plain old curious to hit the Marriott Burbank Hotel & Convention Center. The show runs throughout this weekend, so if you haven't hit it yet, and you live anywhere near Burbank, you should check it out on Sunday. I'll tell you why after the jump. In addition to the tons of horror movie toys, models, artwork, and posters for sale and on display, this year's Monsterpalooza boasts a rare U.S. appearance from the first man...

Kevin McCarthy
February 15, 1914 – September 11, 2010
Best known for his portrayal of Dr. Miles Bennell in the film adaptation of Jack Finney’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Seattle-born Kevin McCarthy’s film and television career spanned more than five decades. As both series regular and guest star, McCarthy was familiar on television throughout the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. His genre roles included (among others) the title character in Twilight Zone’s Long Live Walter Jameson.
I knew Kevin, as did many of us who love horror and science fiction. He loved attending conventions across the country and meeting and greeting his fans. It was at one of these many shows that I was able to ask him about my favorite role of his; that of campaign manager Dick Jensen in Gore Vidal’s The Best Man. He was truly astonished that a “horror chick” like me would know that film,...

When it comes to horror conventions, we here at Dread Central are pretty damned jaded. We always make it a point to show up to party and even give away tons of free stuff at events all over the country. Speaking personally, during my convention going tenure I thought I had seen it all. I don't think I've ever been happier to be wrong.
This past weekend the 2nd annual Monsterpalooza show was held at the Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel in Burbank, California. Having heard unbelievably good things about Monsterpalooza's debut show last year (which I sadly missed), I was more than geared up to drink in the con's sights and sounds. There was no amount of preparation that could have gotten me and the Dread Central gang in attendance ready for what we were about to experience.

The eighth annual Rondo Hatton Awards have come to pass, and we have all the results for you, including one winner who we're kind of shocked about ... us!
That's right, kids, your love has carried us over once again, and we're both proud and humbled to announce that Dread Central has won the Rondo Award for "Best Website". Honestly? We were honored just to have been nominated. Being up against twenty-nine other quality sites, we never thought we'd win. You guys have no idea how much this means to us as we've always considered the Rondos to be reserved only for the very best in our genre. To be revered as one of "those" for even just a fleeting moment is something we consider to be prestigious in the highest regard.
But make no mistake ... even though technically we are the actual recipients of it, this award belongs very much...

With the second annual and highly anticipated horror convention Monsterpalooza – The Art of Monsters returning Friday, April 9–11, 2010, to The Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel in Burbank, CA (get your tickets here now, and how could you not, when they’re only $20 a day?), Dread caught up with the con’s creator, Eliot Brodsky, to talk about the F/X and monster-heavy event.
“Monsterpalooza was a glimmer of an idea back in 2007,” Brodsky told us of the show’s conception. “I actually did a very sized-down version of the show on the East Coast in 2008. It was in conjunction with Monster-Mania as a display museum.”
While other horror conventions seem to primarily focus on the stars of the genre (and this year’s Monsterpalooza isn’t slacking in that department by any means, as Brodsky’s organized a Return of the Living Dead reunion panel with the principals from that classic), the...
