Described as “Zombeavers meets Godzilla,” the indie creature feature Crabs! is headed home in time for the holidays, available to watch on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Prime as of November 15, 2022. Bloody Disgusting has also learned this week that a bonus features packed Director’s Edition Blu-ray will be released next week, on November 22, 2022.
While you wait, check out an exclusive clip from Crabs! below, wherein the sheriff and his deputy discover the gruesome handiwork of the film’s man-eating crab monsters.
In the film from director Pierce Berolzheimer, “Mutated by nuclear runoff a horde of murderous horseshoe crabs descend on a sleepy California town causing Prom Night terror. As the deadly crustaceans claw their way through the disbelieving population, it’s up to a ramshackle band of students and police to address the increasingly ginormous crab menace in a love letter to such practical effects horrors as Gremlins and nostalgic Roger Corman classics.

Once upon a time, creature features dominated entertainment.
Pierce McDermott Berolzheimer hopes to find a spot in the hearts of genre fans with creature feature, Crabs!
As director, writer, editor, and producer, Berolzheimer's hands are all over this low-budget indie flick, and he should be proud.
Crabs! offers a lot straight from the features we love, like those from auteur Roger Corman to the plethora of creature flicks that once dominated Syfy's weekend lineup.
Berolzheimer set out to make a movie that is "pure, unbridled fun," and "excessive and over-the-top, but also genuine and heartwarming."
It sure sounds like a tall order, but the filmmaking gods were with him, and Crabs! carries viewers through a small town's mutated Horseshoe Crab invasion until an unlikely hero saves the day.
Crabs! is personal to Berolzheimer. Along with his specific goals, it is also a testament to his uncle's courage while living with muscular dystrophy.

Stupid, ridiculous, inept… Amazing! Yes, that’s director Pierce Berolzheimer’s Crabs! in a nutshell.
Feeling like a product of 50s creature-feature B-movies and the output of The Asylum, Crabs! plot is simple: a horde of murderous crab monsters descend on a sleepy coastal town on prom night, and only a ragtag group of outcasts – including Philip McCalister, a wheelchair-bound geek; his girl friend Maddy, who becomes more; her mom and his brother – can save the day. Yes, we’re in cliche-filled territory here but that’s not a bad thing, for Crabs! is actually an on-the-nose satire that plays with the conventions of the genre whilst conforming to them too!
On the surface it may seem like Crabs! is an inept mess but there’s so much going on...

Crabs! was originally announced back in 2015 so it's crazy how long the film took to come out. It is premiering at the UK's FrightFest this Thursday August 26th.

Our friends at Raven Banner Entertainment have given us the first look at Pierce Berolzheimer's debut feature film 'Crabs!'. A horde of murderous crab monsters descend on a sleepy coastal town on Prom night, and only a ragtag group of outcasts can save the day. Crabs! is premiering at the UK's FrightFest this Thursday August 26th. Short and sweet it gets to the point and it looks like we should expect lots of blood! Glorious. And there is no escaping the nod to a horror classic any time something like this happens in this clip. That is a-okay by us. "Does your mother know you're going down there on a Friday night?" Abramorama has released the first trailer for a hazy, indie drama titled Flock of Four, the feature directorial debut of director Gregory Caruso. We haven't heard much about this yet, but it actually seems like a nifty story for a film, and it looks pretty darn good. Set over the course of one night in 1959, the film follows four best friend teens who drive around Los Angeles searching for one of their music idols, legendary jazz musician Pope Dixon (a fictional character inspired by real musicians), as played by Reg E. Cathey (who passed away in February). The cast includes Braeden Lemasters, Uriah Shelton, Isaac Jay, and Dylan Riley Snyder as the friends, as well as Shane Harper, Coco Jones, and Nadji Jeter. I like the vintage look and feel to this. Take a look. Here's the first...

James Bond fans will get a kick out of the Season 3 premiere of "Kickin' It" -- the episode is based on 007 movies! "Kickin' It" star Dylan Riley Snyder tells KidsPickFlicks about the episode, "It's called 'Spyfall.' It's all secret agent, based on Skyfall the James Bond movie, so we know its like spy stuff and Jack does some amazing things, hanging off buildings. We have some cool gadgets in there and a pretty good story...it might involve some pudding!"
The episode also involves Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas.
It's so cool they're making an episode out of a movie! What movie does Dylan love? "My favorite movie for kids is probably Fox and the Hound. I think it's my favorite movie in general."

Best Male LeadRonald Bronstein"Daddy Longlegs"Beginner's luck? Ronald Bronstein is an award-winning writer-director of indie films. But in writer-directors Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie's film "Daddy Longlegs," he makes his film acting debut. Here he plays Lenny, a divorced father of two young boys who has little grasp on parental responsibility and skill, and even less good judgment. When we first meet Lenny, he pompously mouths off to the school principal in a juvenile defense of his two boys. That scene sets our teeth on edge for what's to come. Lenny takes his sons on vacation with a woman he first met at a bar the night before. He brings the kids to his job as a projectionist, then lets them run wild and even operate the projector—badly. Told he can't bring them again, he gives them a wee dose of sedatives that sends them into Stage 4 sleep for days on end.

Best DirectorDarren Aronofsky'Black Swan'In many ways, Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" is similar to his previous film, "The Wrestler." Both lead characters are dedicated artists struggling with inner demons. To express themselves, they have only their bodies. Their age, injuries, and mental stability threaten to undermine their art. However, in "Black Swan," Aronofsky masterfully adds another layer. He parallels the journey of Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) with the tale of "Swan Lake," the tragic ballet in which she performs. The astute viewer will notice his use of black and white in the set pieces of almost every scene, alluding to the contrast between the white and black swans. He adds elements of horror, drama, and paranoia, all of which exist in "Swan Lake." He directs the actors in such a way that you aren't ever sure what is fantasy and what is reality. All of these elements add...

Life During Wartime Written and Directed by: Todd Solondz Starring: Shirley Henderson, Dylan Riley Snyder, Ciaran Hinds, Paul Reubens Todd Solondz might be the most polarizing comedy director no one’s ever heard of. The reputation of his films precede them and a shroud of controversy seems to surround his work, which frequently depicts explicit sexuality, including pedophilia and rape, not to mention murder, exploitation, and ridicule channeled through a pitch-black misanthropic irony. And yet you might as well be speaking another language bringing up his name and filmography with a mainstream crowd. Even in the circles in which he’s known, his sense of humor is a decidedly acquired taste. So specific, in fact, that his latest film, Life During Wartime, may come as a shock to his fans. And not the sort of shock they’re used to. A direct follow up to probably his most well known film,...

Life During Wartime
Directed by: Todd Solondz
Cast: Shirley Henderson, Paul Reubens, Alison Janney, Dylan Riley Snyder, Chris Marquette
Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: August 6, 2010 (Limited)
Plot: Twelve years after their father (Hinds) is sent to jail for child molestation, two brothers (Snyder, Marquette) struggle with the idea of forgiveness while suffering through the pain of remembering.
Who’S It For? While this film can stand on its own, those who have already seen Solondz’s Happiness would be at great advantage to re-familiarize themselves with that film’s characters, so that the actor switch-up of this “quasi-sequel” to that 1998 film makes a bit more sense. For those new to Solondz, Life During Wartime is for those who appreciate dark comedies that can plunge into the heaviest shades of black in order to test one’s potential to sympathize with characters of various serious flaws.

Chicago – Todd Solondz’s 1998 masterpiece, “Happiness,” is the darkest American comedy ever made. It’s so brutal and uncompromising that it calls into question the very definition of comedy. When one character explains to her sister that she isn’t laughing at her, but with her, the sister responds, “But I’m not laughing.” Solondz isn’t laughing either.
Like many provocateurs, Solondz has been accused of resorting to cheap shock tactics and stereotypes when attempting to portray his distinctively disturbing worldview. Yet Solondz is nothing if not sincere. His films directly confront the puritanical and judgmental instincts embedded in the human psyche that prevent us from identifying with others. He forces us to acknowledge the humanity lying within society’s most reviled creatures, particularly those suffering from arrested sexual development. The riotous laughter that “Happiness” elicited from audiences was undoubtedly caused by extreme discomfort rather than unbridled hilarity.

Chicago – With his unique and sometimes divisive career, writer/director Todd Solondz is something of a controversial figure in the world of independent cinema. Some people love him, others hate him, and very few fall in the middle. His new film, “Life During Wartime,” is unlikely to change his polarizing reputation.
As Solondz says, “I go for the cojones. That’s what I want.” A filmmaker who has never been shy of any subject matter tells me, “My ideal response is one that is two-pronged. On the one hand, there’s an emotional response to what I put out there and I’ve taken you someplace that’s provoked you in some way and made you feel alive. And it doesn’t mean there’s not an intellectual component but all of these interpretations are interesting because I can learn something – “Ooh, I didn’t think of that.” And that...

Whatever you say about the films of Todd Solondz, and people usually have a lot to say, his posters are often something special. Whether by coincidence or design his films have now racked up three of the best illustrated posters of recent years: Daniel Clowes’ iconic comic book portraits for Happiness (1998), Kathryn Rathke’s fairy-book illustration for Palindromes (2004) (see both below), and now Akiko Stehrenberger’s whimsical painting for Solondz’s newest film Life During Wartime (2009).
Readers of this column should recognize Akiko’s name. She was the designer of my favorite movie poster of the last decade, Funny Games Us. The new poster, designed under the auspices of Mojo design studio (also responsible for the poster for The American) actually developed out of an initial photographic composite design and, despite the fact that Life During Wartime is a sequel of sorts to Happiness, it wasn’t the distributor's intention to use another illustration.

So here I am. Having just finished watching Todd Solondz latest mind fuck through warped Americana I am staring at my laptop. An empty word document in front of me. I can’t for the life of me figure out how I’m going to review Life During Wartime at all. It’s not that I didn’t like it as such and yet I can’t articulate exactly what I did like about it. I wasn’t shocked by it either.
Solondz isn’t anywhere near as brave enough as Gaspar Noé or early Lars von Trier (before he sold out and went all Hollywood). What Todd Solondz can do quite well is discuss depressing adult themes with a thin sliver of dark humour running through it.
The characters and feel of Life During Wartime will be very familiar for anyone who has seen the director’s previous effort Happiness.

This is the Pure Movies review, written exclusively by Garth Twa, for Life During Wartime, directed by Todd Solondz and starring Shirley Henderson, Michael K. Williams, Roslyn Ruff, Allison Janney, Michael Lerner, Dylan Riley Snyder, Ciarán Hinds and Renée Taylor. In Todd Solondz’s new film, Life During Wartime, he revisits his 1998 film Happiness. Happiness is a breathtaking and singular film with a humour so dark and ghastly it leaves one gasping, not laughing. It gave us a suburbia that belonged in a side panel of a Bosch triptych, surreal and troubling, heightened by its garish mundanity. Seared into our collective cinephilic consciousnesses are scenes like Kristina (Camryn Manheim) scarfing a cheeseburger and fries while explaining to her date, Allen (Philip Seymour Hoffman) how she chopped up the doorman and put him Ziploc bags and stored him the freezer; a psychotherapist (Dylan Baker) pragmatically discussing erections and masturbation with his...

New York's IFC Center played host Wednesday night to the NYC premiere of Todd Solondz's latest, "Life During Wartime," with stars Ally Sheedy, Dylan Riley Snyder and others among the attendees. "When we first saw it at Telluride, we knew we wanted it but we tried not to get too excited," IFC's Ryan Werner said prior to the screening, introducing the feature along with colleague Arianna Bocco. Solondz himself waltzed up ...

Part of the fun of the whole film festival experience is discovering new talents, both in front and behind of the camera. Since I'm an avid fan of the top ten list format, I thought I'd go at this again. Cannes gave us two break-thru perfs in acting from A Prophet's Tahar Rahim and Fish Tank's Katie Jarvis (both were mentioned once again in IndieWIRE's Tiff poll), I featured the both of them in this apres Cannes' piece. - #10. Is Welcome to the Dollhouse auteur Todd Solondz a misanthrope, or a humanist whose characters just happen to engage in ugly, perverse, cruel behavior? For me, the answer has been made clear with Life During Wartime (screening Saturday, Oct. 10 at 9pm), Solondz's quasi-sequel to 1998's Happiness, in which all of the characters are now played by different actors: Todd Solondz starts his latest and finest film to date by introducing us to Joy (Shirley Henderson), whose husband Allen (Michael Kenneth Williams) is not quite cured of his peculiar "affliction." Joy's sister Trish (Allison Janney) is hoping to stabilize her family life by marrying the recently divorced Harvey (Michael Lerner), but her soon-to-be bar-mitzvahed son Timmy (Dylan Riley Snyder) isn’t sure he wants another man in the house—especially as it seems his dead father, Bill (Ciarán Hinds), might not be dead after all. His portrait of these and several...

Here are a few last, random thoughts on the Toronto film festival, which came to a close yesterday: It Was a Very Good Year. In the week I spent there, almost everyone I talked to seemed to agree -- as did I -- on the generally exciting quality of the movies. The fact that so many of those films connected with the anxious urgency of the moment lent the programming (intentionally or not) a certain seductive coherence. At times, coming out of a movie like Collapse or Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, it was almost like attending the Whole Earth on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown film festival -- and I mean that as a compliment. Best Film I Saw. Hands down, Up in the Air. An exquisite reminder of everything that a Hollywood movie can still be, Jason Reitman’s sublime comedy about a jet-setting down-sizer...
