If Rian Johnson’s 2006 film Brick proved anything, it’s that you can apply film noir tropes to almost anything as long as you believe in it. Director Ryan Andrews film Elfie Hopkins has no faith in this idea, it has no faith in almost any of the genres it attempts to encompass resulting in a confused, schizophrenic mess of a film which wastes so much of the potential of the central idea.
The film starts in a small village (possibly in Wales although accents are all over the place) where 22-year-old Elfie Hopkins (Jaime Winstone) lives a strange existence consisting of smoking weed and having strange detective fantasies with her best friend Dylan (Aneurin Barnard). Elfie longs for something, anything to happen in her hum drum existence which will make her weird noirish speech and thinking patterns gain weight because all she is doing at the moment is peeing off her step mum,...

Last week saw a great handful of international releases make their way onto our shelves, with Shion Sono’s Himizu and David and Stéphane Foenkinos’ Delicacy topping the list. And this week brings us another excellent set of international films for our enjoyment, along with a handful of classics getting the HD treatment.
We’ve also been enjoying the special Blu-ray Steelbook releases from Play.com over the past few months, in tandem with Universal’s 100th Anniversary, and now Paramount are entering the fray with two titles of their own getting a Steelbook re-packaging, for their own Centenary celebrations.
My picks of the week:
Morten Tyldum’s Headhunters.
And the Blu-ray releases of Shion Sono’s Love Exposure & the Steven Spielberg-produced Falling Skies – Season 1.

Elfie Hopkins is bringing her cannibalistic tendencies to home video for our friends across the pond, and we've got the skinny on what to expect when she takes a bite out of Blu-ray and DVD!
From the Press Release
Jaime Winstone (Made in Dagenham, Kidulthood) is Elfie Hopkins - an animal-loving slacker, stoner, and wannabe detective, living in a sleepy hunting village. Haunted by the death of her mother, Elfie seeks solace from the old school detectives in The Maltese Falcon and Chinatown. She entertains herself by investigating the villagers and upsetting everyone with her imaginative allegations.
Things get serious however with the arrival of trendy city dwellers, the Gammons, who weave seductive tales of adventure and entice the villagers with offers of exotic hunting holidays around the world. Elfie smells a rat - her mundane existence is about to be blown apart.

Low-budget horror flick Elfie Hopkins has little stomach for the terrifying potential of its flesh-eating subject matter
Brit horror flick Elfie Hopkins has found little favour but it does have one thing going for it. Cannibals. Anthropophagy in a present-day Welsh village may seem an impossibly unlikely premise. Not so. The practice is far from confined to primitive tribes in remote regions. It's alive and well in places at least as civilised as the principality. Last month, police in European Russia arrested a 24-year-old who admitted eating people. Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, a 35-year-old stabbed a drinking companion, cooked and ate part of the body and sold some of the remainder at a local market as pork. Matej Curko was shot dead by Slovakian police after eating perhaps dozens of victims. In 2009, gangsters in Madrid ate someone they'd murdered.

Marley (15)
(Kevin Macdonald, 2012, Us/UK) 145 mins
Authoritative to the point of exhausting, Macdonald's documentary compiles an awesome amount of footage, photos, interviews, etc – but then it's a big subject. Whether you really get to the man beyond the legend is debatable (this was made with Marley family backing), but there's much here you've never seen, from Bob's Rasta roots to his kick-around in London's Battersea Park.
Salmon Fishing In The Yemen (12A)
(Lasse Hallström, 2012, UK) Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt. 106 mins
An incongruous setting for a mushy fish-out-of-water romcom, with Blunt and her sheikh boss lured by McGregor's tackle.
Elles (18)
(Malgorzata Szumowska, 2011, Fra/Pol/Ger) Juliette Binoche, Anaïs Demoustier. 99 mins
Empowerment and eroticism mix uneasily when Binoche's enquiries into student prostitution affect her own life.
Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy (18)
(Rob Heydon, 2011, Can) Adam Sinclair, Kristin Kreuk, Billy Boyd. 99 mins
Rave-era yarn that's 15 years too late to be the Trainspotting of Mdma it wants to be.

Last week, I went along to a fancy hotel in London to sit down with two of the stars of new British indie movie, Elfie Hopkins. It stars Ray Winstone, Kimberley Nixon, Steven Mackintosh, Rupert Evans, Jaime Winstone, Kate Magowan and is directed by new up and coming director, Ryan Andrews.
The two people in question are Jamie Winstone and Aneurin Barnard who tell me about how their characters journey through the movie, what their experiences of adventure were growing up and how there was the possibility that the movie was going to be shot in 3d.
Elfie Hopkins is released in UK cinemas today, 20th April.

This Welsh-set comedy-horror noir doesn't quite work – but the director might still be one to watch
There are some nice moments in this debut feature, a comedy horror-noir, but it doesn't quite hang together. In a Welsh village, lonely Elfie Hopkins, played by Jaime Winstone, passes the time by affecting the mannerisms of a private detective – part Miss Marple, part Jake Gittes – and smoking weed with a mate ,who secretly has feelings for her. Then a very creepy family moves in to the village. It doesn't totally take off until the final act, but there's evidence here that Ryan Andrews will become a force to be reckoned with.

The humdrum life of an aspiring teenage detective takes an interesting turn when a new family move into the quiet neighburhood and before long Elfie Hopkins is convinced there is more to their new neighbours than meets the eye.
If you missed the recent trailer for Ryan Andrews’ feature debut it’s well worth taking a look, if only to enjoy the strange tone evoked. It put me in mind of Jeunet & Caro’s Delicatessen shot through with a Nancy Drew vibe by way of The Wicker Man. And if that fever dream of a sackful of influences isn’t enough to get you interested then, gosh Jed, I don’t even want to know you.*
Jaime Winstone leads the film and is joined by her Dad Ray, recently seen troubling capital scum in The Sweeney trailer, and Kimberley Nixon, Rupert Evans, Kate Magowan and Steven Mackintosh join them in the mix.

I’ve had my weird little lazy eye on director Ryan Andrews’ forthcoming cannibal opus “Elfie Hopkins” for a while now, and I’m pretty excited that the flick is headed to theaters in the UK this April. Of course, living in the States, that doesn’t do me much good. However, I’m hoping that the movie does well during its theatrical run, giving North American distributors incentive to pick it up for release on DVD and/or Blu-ray. My fingers will stay crossed until that happens. Here’s hoping I don’t have to have one surgically removed between now and then. Check out this synopsis if you’re curious: Set in a sleepy hunting village, Elfie Hopkins is the story of twenty-two year old slacker and “wanna-be” detective. Hot on the heels of its Tribeca announcement, CinemaBlend has nabbed the first American poster for Frédéric Jardin‘s reportedly thrilling actioner Sleepless Night. The simple, kinetic design on display won’t tell you a single thing about the film’s plot, or what makes it so interesting — i.e., the predominant use of one location for most of its runtime — but I’m happy to trade that in favor of something amusingly brutal. (This could almost be an alternative poster for Step Brothers, really.) Fitting for a movie that breaks the mold, isn’t it?

If this new Elfie Hopkins quad poster is anything to go by, all is assuredly not well in the Winstone household. Dad Ray and daughter Jaime have their hands full dealing with the film's sinister woodland goings-on. The last time Winston Sr. looked this focused he was being sucked into the space between spaces in The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. At least this time he's armed, which is more than it looks like Elfie herself (Jaime Winstone) is boasting. The 22 year-old wildlife-loving amateur sleuth has to get by on wits dampened by a spliff or two as she sets to work uncovering bloody work afoot in her dormant hunting village. Well, wits and probably some shotguns. Written and directed by Ryan Andrews, a previous collaborator with Jaime Winstone, Elfie Hopkins promises to showcase the younger Winstone's skills. Her character is inspired in her crime-solving mission by noirs like Chinatown...

I don’t know, folks. Maybe it’s the complete lack of sleep talking right now, but I think writer/director Ryan Andrews’ upcoming cannibal flick “Elfie Hopkins” looks ridiculously badass. The teaser art we posted a while back was impressive, but this is something else altogether. Like I said, the effects of last night’s revelry might be creeping into my better judgment, but at the moment, “Elfie Hopkins” is the bee’s knees. The presence of Ray Winstone and his daughter Jaime are definitely a selling point, as well. In short, I’m super pumped, though I’m sure that’s pretty obvious. Unfamiliar with this one? Let’s correct that problem right now: Set in a sleepy hunting village, Elfie Hopkins is the story of twenty-two year old slacker and “wanna-be” detective. Elfie is a stoner and an animal lover in a village populated with hunters. Haunted...

The actress on playing opposite father Ray and her lead role in dark fantasy drama Elfie Hopkins
The tan may be Ibiza, but the accent, and particularly the machine-gun laugh, are unmistakably London. Jaime Winstone, the 26-year-old actress, is talking about her hair, which is currently Gwen Stefani blond and swishy, but which she changes dramatically at least four times a year. "I need to get it back to dark for a role," she says. "But I've been told I can't put any more colour in it."
What, ever again? "Nah," she cackles. "This month."
We are in the Wagamama noodle bar on London's South Bank, where Winstone is promoting Art and Eat, an art-and-dining initiative that will put the work of 10 up-and-coming artists on the walls and placemats of the restaurant chain from next week. The canvas of graffiti pioneer Remi Rough, however, is somewhat overshadowed by the petite...

It's been a long wait, but Elfie Hopkins and the Gammons is finally shooting in Wales.
The independent horror feature film stars Jaime Winstone as a grungy wannabe detective who attempts to uncover the human flesh-eating truth about the close-knit Gammon family.
The film is directed and co-written by Ryan Andrews who told Shock Till You Drop
"After meeting Jaime I knew she could become the main focus [for] something really special and unique in British horror fantasy terms. Elfie is a finely tuned representation of my own childhood memories growing up in rural Wales. I often used to imagine myself as a vampire hunter let loose on a community of surreal country folk. Riyad and I have taken those already magnified experiences and transformed them further into a combination of British twee and American grunge – a weird mash-up of two worlds with a heightened reality comic-strip feel informed by everything...

Jaime Winstone (Donkey Punch) will star alongside her father, Ray Winstone (Beowulf) in Ryan Andrews‘ cannibal thriller Elfie Hopkins and the Gammons.
Elfie Hopkins and the Gammons might sound like a new animated adventure for under the 12′s. This is just so wrong. Hot chick, cannibals, blood, fighting, violence, and flipping Beowulf himself, do you really need more to get you excited. Jamie will play the title role, a quirky wannabe detective investigating the Gammons, a weird new family who make move into the village. Ray will play the local butcher. This is the first time both actors have worked together.
