Exclusive: Sony Pictures Television’s TriStar is adapting Laurie Fabiano’s bestselling 2010 historical novel Elizabeth Street for television, with Edoardo Ponti (The Life Ahead) attached to direct and executive produce. Tyler Hisel has written a pilot for the project, based on Fabiano’s own great-grandmother’s epic struggles.
Elizabeth Street is set in New York’s Little Italy at the dawn of the 20th century. It follows Giovanna Pontillo, an Italian immigrant reeling in the wake of personal tragedy. Arriving in America, her survival and success on the streets of Old New York soon draws the unwanted attention of the notorious Black Hand, the earliest form of the Italian-American Mafia. As the stakes grow higher, Giovanna desperately fights to save what is important above all else – family.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Rlj Entertainment. Director: Jack Heller. Writer: Tyler Hisel. Cast: Steve Agee, Nick Damici, Kevin Durand and Heath Freeman. Dark Was the Night is the latest film from rookie director Jack Heller (Enter Nowhere). The film, from the promotional material, appears to be a creature feature. But, Dark Was the Night is centrally a family drama; the creatures lurk around the edges of the central setting, Maiden Woods. Though, they do make a late CGI appearance. Starring horror vet Nick Damici (Late Phases) and Kevin Durand, the film offers three mediocre themes: the male protection of femininity, the Devil as evil and a minor one involving hunting, or the creature(s) being a hunter. All of these themes could have been forgotten for a more important one, involving humanity's encroachment on nature. As it is, Dark Was the Night is a fairly standard horror outing.

“Dark Was The Night received an overwhelming response at ScreamFest and the Lincoln Center’s New York Film Festival Sidebar Scary Movies Series and is now in theaters across the country and available Day and Date on VOD, and Digital platforms including ITunes and Amazon instant video.
Kevin Durand (The Strain) and Lukas Haas (Inception) star as local policemen who go to battle against an ancient evil. The script, from Tyler Hisel, appeared on the 2009 Black List of best un-produced scripts, a rarity for the monster genre, under the title The Trees. Something goes bump in the shadows of the small-town setting of Dark Was the Night, the new horror film from Jack Heller (Enter Nowhere) that stars Kevin Durand and Lukas Haas. With Dark Was the Night now in theaters and on VOD from Image Entertainment, we caught up via Q&A with director Heller, who discussed blending creature-centric scares with psychological tension and much more.
Dark Was the Night seems to offer horror in both physical and internal doses. What elements of Tyler Hisel’s screenplay intrigued you the most when this project first came to your attention?
Jack Heller: The script Tyler crafted laid the foundation of opportunity to explore characters dealing with both external horrors and internal ones. When I came onto the project I was excited to work with Tyler to bring these elements to the surface of the script and ultimately the film we made.

Into the Woods: A Creature Was Lurking in Heller’s Rudimentary Sophomore Film
If it’s nifty poetic title manages to reel you in, you’ll discover a much less memorable narrative at play in Jack Heller’s sophomore effort, Dark Was the Night (if the title sounds familiar, you may be thinking of the 2013 indie Cold Was the Night with Bryan Cranston or the gospel blues song by Blind Willie Johnson). A creature feature filled with familiar scary techniques melded to tangential familial stressors, Tyler Hisel’s screenplay (a writer making a jump from found footage to traditional thriller narratives following the South African flick Safari, 2013) feels rather primitively conceived. A mysterious, mythical beast is unleashed in the woods while the rural townsfolk become terrified as animals disappear and the body count mounts, and the unloved outsider sheriff must contend with stopping the creature from decimating a community...

Whenever darkness falls upon a cast of horror movie characters, you know it’s go-time. Whether it be in nightmares, during the 3:00Am witching hour, or cloaked under the moon’s pale glow, darkness allows for the most vile beasts to enjoy a little after-hours tormenting. Werewolves, vampires, boogeymen and monsters alike use the dark for cover, which makes for a proper introduction to Jack Heller’s Dark Was The Night. Yes, it’s about the darkness of night, evil figures that lurk between the shadows, and, of course, the perils of deforestation! What, you didn’t see a forest-friendly message coming?

Monster films seem to be having a nice little comeback. We seem to be venturing away from the “Grindhouse” homage films, the torture porn films and the other tropes the genre got stuck in. A film that is on my radar is Dark Was The Night, which was adapted from a screenplay that was on The Blacklist a few years back. We just got word that we shouldn’t have to wait too long to see this flick starring Kevin Durand (The Strain) and Lukas Haas (Lady in White, Inception, Brick). Read below for the official word. We’ve also included a trailer that was posted last year for the film.

Robin Williams’ final feature film, Dito Montiel’s domestic drama Boulevard, has been picked up for international distribution by Inception Film Partners and will be sold during the American Film Market next month in Santa Monica. Kathy Baker, Bob Odenkirk and Roberto Aguire co-star in the pic, which stars Williams as a lonely married man who begins to confront the emptiness that permeates his life. Williams officially joined the project in January 2013. Douglas Soesbe penned the script. Camellia Entertainment produced. “Robin Williams’ performance as a man in a heartbreaking struggle to find his place in the world is both heroic and poignant and Boulevard is an extraordinary coda to an indelible performer’s life,” said Inception partner Andy Reimer. He and Jim Harvey negotiated the deal on behalf of Inception, with Preferred Content and Wme on behalf of the filmmakers. Preferred Content and Wme are handling North American rights.

Things are definitely going bump in the night in Jack Heller’s new creature feature. A highly anticipated entry in this year’s Screamfest, the foremost horror film festival in the country, “Dark Was the Night” will feature Kevin Durand (“Lost”), Bianca Kajlich (“Rules of Engagement”), Lukas Haas (“Inception”), Nick Damici (“Stake Land”), and a decidedly creepy something lurking in the woods. Previously titled “The Trees,” the script by Tyler Hisel appeared on the 2009 Black List of best unproduced screenplays. That year’s list, compiled and voted on by over 250 film executives, included “The Social Network,” “The Spectacular Now,” and “Prisoners.” Dylan K. Narang, Stefan Nowicki, Dallas Sonnier, and Heller himself began production in 2012, filming in Southampton, N.Y. Hisel’s first produced script is poised to thrill and terrify audiences with its homage to the classic monster genre. The story, which is reportedly—and frightfully—based on true events,...
