The voice is unmistakable. As the video of a woman wading into the ocean during sunset played, a melodic tune was overlaid: “I woke up, woke up, woke up in a sunshine stattte, that’s livin’ up to me.”
The voice was clearly that of T-Pain, including his signature Auto-Tune eccentricities. The catch? The lyrics — and T-Pain’s singing voice itself — were created by generative artificial intelligence tech called “Dream Track” from YouTube. The AI wrote the song and re-created T-Pain’s voice so that a user could include it as a personal soundtrack to a video. YouTube also has signed John Legend, Demi Lovato and Charlie Puth, among others, for its Dream Track tech.

Jimmy Fallon has offered a mea culpa to his staff after a report highlighted a “pretty glum atmosphere” at The Tonight Show over the years.
Deadline understands that Fallon spoke to staff this afternoon after Rolling Stone published an article that called the NBC show a “toxic workplace”.
“I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. I never set out to create that type of atmosphere at the show. I think sometimes I’m working with the best of the best, you guys are the top of the game,” he told staff according to someone on the call.
He admitted to have done “embarrassing” things in the past. “I want this show to be fun, it should be inclusive for everybody, it should be funny, it should be the best show, the best people. I just wanted to… say I miss you guys.”

As the host of “The Tonight Show,” Jimmy Fallon’s on-air persona is one of relentless positivity. But off-camera, the star may not be so nice, according to a new Rolling Stone report that alleges the former “Saturday Night Live” star has created a toxic workplace at the storied late night institution.
The report, published Thursday, speaks to two current “Tonight Show” staff members and 14 former staffers who worked on the show since Fallon took over as host in 2014, all of whom remained anonymous. All of the sources portray “The Tonight Show” as a toxic, ugly environment, where staffers are intimidated and belittled by their bosses, including Fallon himself, and Hr complaints go unrecognized. Several of the sources said the environment caused negative effects on the mental health of themselves and their coworkers; it allegedly became commonplace on the show to joke about killing yourself, and guests’ dressing rooms became...

Chris Miller will take the reins of NBC’s venerable “Tonight Show,” stepping in as showrunner as the current one, Jamie Granet-Bederman, takes a step back.
Miller joins the program from “The Drew Barrymore Show,” where he served as one of the executive producers. He has ties to Fallon, having worked for Flower Films, the production company launched by Barrymore and her partner, Nancy Juvonen. Juvonen is Fallon’s wife, and she made some popular appearances on “Tonight” during the pandemic, when the show went into an “at home” production that featured its host and his family hunkering down away from the “Tonight” set at NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza headquarters.
Granet-Bederman is expected to focus on developing new projects for Fallon, who also has his own production company, Electric Hot Dog, which is one of the backers of the singing series “That’s My Jam.”

Exclusive: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is making some executive changes.
Deadline understands that showrunner Jamie Granet-Bederman is stepping down and will be replaced by The Drew Barrymore Show exec producer Chris Miller.
Granet-Bederman, who has worked with Fallon for 13 years, is transitioning to develop a number of new projects with the late-night host, who has been ramping up his non-Tonight Show projects such as musical gameshow That’s My Jam via his Electric Hot Dog shingle.
Granet-Bederman has been running the NBC show since November 2020, when she took over from Gavin Purcell.
“These last 13 years working with Jimmy have been such a gift. It’s been an honor to have helped him launch not one but two late-night shows, and I will be forever grateful to my amazing Tonight Show family,” Granet-Bederman told Deadline. “And as lucky as I’ve been to have had this experience, I’m even...

The showrunner is leaving, but the show must go on.
Staffers at CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” aren’t sure who the next top producer will be at the program, according to three people familiar with the matter, with top producers ready to take their time to examine the needs of the show after the departure of Chris Licht, who has been executive producer of the late-night mainstay since 2016. Licht’s decision to take a new role as the CEO of CNN once Discovery closes its acquisition of WarnerMedia leaked this weekend, well before the executive was able to formally inform George Cheeks, CEO of Paramount Global’s CBS operations, or Shari Redstone, chairman of the company, according to one of these people.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” has been renewed for five years — a longer term commitment from NBC to the host than the network had previously disclosed.
Susan Rovner, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming chairman, confirmed the renewal during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation Monday. Rovner noted it matter-of-factly her opening conversation with “Today” anchor Hoda Kotb.
Rovner didn’t elaborate on the Fallon renewal. She emphasized that NBCUniversal is working fast to generate content for its linear and streaming platforms. The company went through a massive restructuring of its TV operations last fall when Rovner signed on to lead content operations after more than 20 years as a top creative executive at Warner Bros. TV.
Rovner noted that NBCU’s new centralized TV content group has ordered 80 new series and special events.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” has found its new head writer in Colin Elzie.
Elzie has been a writer on the show since 2016. He has been in the head writer role since the end of last year, after Rebecca Drysdale left in November.
Deadline first reported the news of Elize.
“The Tonight Show” underwent several staffing changes behind the camera in the last year. Most notably, Gavin Purcell exited as showrunner, a role he only planned to hold temporarily, and was replaced by Jamie Granet-Bederman. “The Tonight Show” is produced by Universal Television and Broadway Video with Lorne Michaels as exec producer.
The show is coming off some of its worst ratings in Fallon’s tenure of hosting the show, which has plummeted during the Trump years. On Monday, Jan. 11, it drew the fourth-smallest audience ever for an original episode of the show, according to Nielsen’s final ratings.

Rebecca Drysdale is leaving as head writer for “The Tonight Show” after only 6 months.
Drysdale announced the news in a private Facebook message, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. A rep for the show did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
Drysdale said the decision was mutual.
In her note, which was shared by the Sun-Times, Drysdale swore off of writing any jokes about Donald Trump, who is currently vying for a second term as president against former vice president Joe Biden. She told TheWrap her distaste for writing Trump skits did not play any role in her exit.
“I am making the decision for myself to never work on, write, or be involved with, another Trump sketch ever again,” she wrote, according to the paper. “I have landed in several jobs and situations over the last few years, not just ‘The Tonight Show,’ where the project of making fun of Trump,...

This comes just over six months after she was named head writer on the NBC late-night show and follows a busy week for the Jimmy Fallon-hosted show, which earlier this week saw showrunner Gavin Purcell leave, replaced by Jamie Granet-Bederman, and Fallon himself extend his contract with the network.

Jimmy Fallon is sticking with The Tonight Show. The comedian has signed a contract extension with NBC to continue hosting the late-night show.
His current contract runs through to the end of 2021 after the network extended the deal in August 2015 for an additional three and a half years.
This comes after a showrunner change on The Tonight Show with Jamie Granet-Bederman taking charge of the show and Gavin Purcell stepping down to return to his development deal with Universal Television.

The late night talk shows and their hosts are blazing the trail for TV production in this time of Covid-19. Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien, Seth Meyers, James Corden and Samantha Bee are all delivering their comedy from home — and let’s not forget the paycasters: Bill Maher and John Oliver. The show goes on even without a set or an audience.

Purcell admits Fallon “initiated the idea.” So, with the consent of his wife and NBC, he began shooting from his Long Island home beginning in mid-March.

Vox Media, the proprietor of popular websites including The Verge, Recode, and Eater, has named its first-ever COO as the company is poised to focus this year on expanding its online video audience and its native advertising offer -- in terms of both video and text. Trei Brundrett, who has been at Vox for more than 10 years and led the development of Vox’s company-wide publishing platform, Chorus, has just been appointed COO, Bloomberg reports.
Brundrett will report to Vox CEO Jim Bankoff in his new role, and will be succeeded in his former position as chief product officer by Joe Alicata, who was most recently VP of revenue product and operations. Last October, Vox also named Gavin Purcell, who previously served as a producer for The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, its new head of video. The company counts a total of roughly 800 employees.

On the air, it's business as usual for Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. But behind the scenes, the NBC late-night leader is adapting to the exits of two longtime power players in as many weeks. First, producer-writer Gavin Purcell, a force on Fallon's digital team, jumped to Vox Media. Then, on Oct. 24, showrunner Josh Lieb, who had been with Fallon since his move to 11:35 p.m. in February 2014, left for a Universal Television deal. Filling Lieb's shoes are three Tonight producers: Gerard Bradford and Mike Dicenzo, who will handle creative efforts, and supervising producer

Vox Media controls a network of well-established, category-specific brands and has hundreds of millions of dollars of venture capital in its coffers. Now with those assets in play, the digital media company has hired an experienced executive to help continue its push into the online video world. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gavin Purcell, who previously served as a producer for The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, is Vox Media’s new head of video.
In his new position, Purcell will oversee the video productions undertaken by Vox’s brands, which include sports hub Sb Nation, food destination Eater, and the eponymous news source Vox. The resources Vox has invested in video have risen considerably since the March 2015 launch of a programming division called Vox Entertainment. In particular, the main Vox channel has rode a series of slickly-produced explainer videos to more than 1.3 million subscribers.

Matt Damon is running toward the rooftop railing of an L.A. building, and people are afraid he's gonna die. James Corden is not one of them. Damon is reprising Jason Bourne, walking fast and looking over the right shoulder of his scuffed brown leather jacket. He then runs into a plump Brit who's dressed exactly the same. Damon smiles. It's Corden, the host of CBS' The Late Late Show, and the proud son of Hazlemere, Buckinghamshire, in England's unfashionable Home Counties. It's an hour before the taping of Corden's show,...

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...
