Sofia Coppola's Priscilla is now showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries.Priscilla.Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla (2023) is deceptively soft to the touch. In adapting Priscilla Presley’s 1985 Elvis and Me memoir, the filmmaker brings an astonishing life story to the big screen, but also all of the beautiful, enviable objects that line the cage of celebrity. From luxurious Cadillacs to a lush array of sparkly designer dresses, accessorized with equally shiny handguns, these markers of luxury hum with palpable allure. At the same time, a sense of foreboding looms large. The opening shot lingers on the perfectly manicured feet of Cailee Spaeny’s Priscilla as they gingerly step across a shaggy, coral-pink rug. The seductive, tactile tableau conjures pleasure and comfort, yet it also foreshadows how Priscilla will sink further and further into a gilded sepulcher throughout her turbulent relationship with Elvis, embodied here by Jacob Elordi. The ‘Priscilla’ costume designer says the movie tells the story of Elvis wanting a “whore in the bedroom” but a “lady in the living room”. Stacey Battat, 47, put together an array of more than 100 outfits for Cailee Spaeny, 26, who plays Elvis Presley’s wife Priscilla in Sofia Coppola’s critically-acclaimed biopic of the singer, and said the outfits reflected Elvis’ obsession with moulding her in his ideal image of how a wife should look. She told The Guardian: “Clothes are such an important part of storytelling. “Costume design has historically been underappreciated in Hollywood, connected to the fact that it has usually been a woman’s job in a man’s industry. “But Sofia values what costumes can bring to character development. “You know that saying – you want a whore in the bedroom, a lady in the living room? That was Elvis. “Priscilla was his ideal woman, and he wanted to keep her pristine.

It’s the apex of campaign season, which means prestige titles are hitting more digital platforms to boost their footprints as precursor nominations trickle in. Two summer releases have expanded to additional streaming services, and an A-list wild card still playing in some theaters is debuting on VOD.
The contender to watch this week: “Priscilla”
Cailee Spaeny picked up a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Sofia Coppola‘s even-handed biopic about Priscilla Presley‘s storied relationship with Elvis (Jacob Elordi), giving her a little extra juice in an extremely stacked Best Actress contest. Coppola’s movies haven’t received many awards since “Lost in Translation,” but this is her biggest box-office hit in years. Spaeny had to inhabit Presley from ages 14 to 28, and her efforts won her the best actress prize at the Venice Film Festival. A VOD release right in time for the holidays could be the boost “Priscilla” needs.

For a story about Priscilla Presley and her time with Elvis, simplicity and minimalism aren’t the words you’d use, especially when Sofia Coppola is at the helm. And yet Coppola’s “Priscilla” is a master in how to make a film on a budget and in just 30 days. “Every movie is a challenge, but the challenge was to shoot in six weeks a movie with so many scenes, different feelings and different textures,” cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd told TheWrap.
From the first minute everything was a blur. As Le Sourd laid out, pre-production required the script to be in perfect shape with at least 15-20 pages needed to be shot on the daily. And from the moment Le Sourd arrived on-set Coppola was already cutting and editing the movie. “She [Coppola] was struggling,” he said. “She was struggling with the budget and she tried to find solutions. How does one create a film festival during an actors strike? Middleburg Film Festival executive director Susan Koch explains she’s approached programming the Virginia fest in the same manner as she has always done. “We looked for the strongest films and a wide range of films that represent diverse voices and ones we feel will expand our view of the world,” she tells Variety.
Now in its 11th year, the festival continues to be a carefully curated weekend of films and conversations, including many of the year’s buzziest titles. “Rustin,” a Netflix biopic of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin that was directed by George C. Wolfe, will open the four-day fest. Wolfe will receive the festival’s Impact Award for his work in bringing the impactful civil and LGBTQ rights story to the screen. Searchlight’s “Poor Things” and A24’s “Priscilla” are also among films screening from Oct.

Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi did their homework when it came to portraying one of the most iconic couples in recent history, Priscilla and Elvis Presley, in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla.
The stars of the A24 biopic hit the carpet for the New York Film Festival’s centerpiece film on Friday, where they discussed their process for transforming into these characters for the project based on Priscilla Presley’s biography Elvis and Me. The story follows Priscilla’s life, starting when she met Elvis in Germany in 1959 until she left him in 1972.
Before production began, Spaeny, who plays the title character, sat down with Priscilla and asked her all the questions she had about the role in order to ensure she portrayed her properly.

Sofia Coppola’s latest film, “Priscilla” is the first to focus solely on the life of the queen of rock and roll legend, Elvis Presley. Now, audiences are getting their first look at Presley, played by “Euphoria” actor Jacob Elordi, in the first full trailer for the movie.
The film follows a teenage Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny) as she meets Elvis at the age of 14. The pair’s whirlwind romance culminates with their marriage and, as the trailer lays out, Priscilla’s struggles to maintain her own identity outside of being the King’s wife.
The aesthetic of the film is pure Coppola, with a lot of satins and pastel colors. Costume designer Stacey Battat’s outfits, particularly on Spaeny, are fantastic. If you’ve seen photos of the real Priscilla and Elvis, especially their wedding pictures, you’ll see the loving attention to detail.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)

Coppola’s behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Philippe Le Sourd, production designer Tamara Deverell, editor Sarah Flack, costume designer Stacey Battat, and music supervisor Randall Poster. The film’s score is by Phoenix.

A24 has released the first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla.”
Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the biographical film follows her life and relationship with the King of Rock ‘n Roll. Cailee Spaeny stars as Priscilla, with Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.
Spaeny and Elordi are the latest stars to play Priscilla and Elvis Presley on screen. Olivia DeJonge and Austin Butler played the lead roles in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biographical music drama “Elvis,” which scored two Golden Globe nominations and one win for Butler’s performance as the iconic singer. The film went on to earn Oscar nominations for best picture, best actor and more.
“Priscilla” marks Coppola’s third collaboration with A24, following 2020’s “On the Rocks” and 2013’s “The Bling Ring.” A series adaptation of Edith Wharton’s “The Custom of the Country” is also in development between A24 and Coppola.

Jacob Elordi is just a hunk of burning love as Elvis Presley.
The “Euphoria” breakout star transforms into the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Sofia Coppola’s adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, “Elvis and Me.” Simply titled “Priscilla,” the A24 film stars Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis.
“Priscilla” marks Coppola’s third film with A24 since “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.” The writer-director reunites with collaborators like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell for the period piece.
Coppola recently compared “Priscilla” to her 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” calling Priscilla herself a “quintessential glamor icon” of Americana style.
“I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland,” Coppola said. “She was going through all the stages of young womanhood...

It’d take approximately zero effort to supersede Baz Luhrmann’s dreadful Elvis but it’s nice that Sofia Coppola, of all people, chose to train her lens on the King. But from an aslant angle, obviously: she’s adapted Priscilla Presley’s tell-all memoir Elvis and Me, which showed the man at some of his most-complicated and least-palatable––drugs, infidelity, insecurity, which is to say a human contra the cartoon Luhrmann found more compelling.
A brief-even-by-teaser-standards teaser, cut to Spectrum’s “How You Satisfy Me,” has arrived before Priscilla‘s October release, giving first look at Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as (of course) Priscilla and Elvis, respectively. Avid Coppola fans might begin seeing where here interests lie, and the return of key creative collaborators––Philippe Le Sourd behind the camera; Sarah Flack on editing; costume designer Stacey Battat; production designer Tamara Deverell––point towards some general design.

Sure, “Marie Antoinette” and “Priscilla” are set 200 years apart, but writer-director Sofia Coppola can’t help but compare the two historical women ahead of her upcoming Priscilla Presley biopic.
Coppola’s 2006 film “Marie Antoinette” starred Kirsten Dunst as the iconic royal who reigned amid the French Revolution. Now, the “Bling Ring” helmer adapts Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me” with Cailee Spaeny (“Mare of Easttown”) and Jacob Elordi playing married couple Priscilla and Elvis. Priscilla serves as an executive producer of the film.
“I’m excited to do something rooted in that Americana style for the first time. And Priscilla is a quintessential glamor icon,” Coppola told Vogue. “I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland. She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world — kind of similarly to Marie Antoinette.

Step aside Austin Butler, there’s a new Elvis in the building.
Hot off of Butler’s turn as the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Baz Luhrmann’s mind-bending biopic “Elvis,” Jacob Elordi will play the “Jailhouse Rock” crooner for A24 drama “Priscilla.”
Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the film will be directed by Sofia Coppola and star “Mare of Easttown” breakout Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis. Coppola also adapted Priscilla’s New York Times bestselling memoir for the big screen.
Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. The film marks Oscar winner Coppola’s first feature since “On the Rocks” starring Rashida Jones and longtime collaborator Bill Murray. Coppola also produces the film, along with Fremantle Company, American Zoetrope, and Sony’s Stage 6 Films will finance the film.

It’s nice, every so often, to find yourself squinting and emitting a tiny what the fuck at a production item. I couldn’t help—really couldn’t help; forgive the language otherwise—doing so at news, per Variety, that Sofia Coppola’s next feature is an adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, whittled down to a punchier Priscilla, and will be led by Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as (of course) Priscilla and Elvis, respectively. With A24’s backing, production begins this fall.
A cursory glance over Presley’s memoir would profusely suggest Coppola’s film will center the spouse far more than Baz Luhrmann’s abysmal biopic—a troubled, drug-dependent, jealous, unfaithful man. Avid fans of the director can start to envision where Coppola’s interests lie, and the return of her primary creative collaborators—Philippe Le Sourd behind the camera; Sarah Flack on editing...

The Elvis comeback tour continues.
With Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis proving its bona fide hit status by crossing the 150 million domestic mark, another Elvis feature project is heating up.
The story of Priscilla Ann Presley, who married Elvis Presley, is getting the biopic treatment courtesy of filmmaker Sofia Coppola and A24.

The project is based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir, Elvis and Me. Presley was only 14 and living in Germany when she met Elvis, then 23, at a party in 1959. He was smitten, and a multiyear courtship began, with her strict parents reluctantly giving in to the persistence of the star,...

Sofia Coppola has set her sights on her next film as the Oscar-winner is set to direct the feature film Priscilla, which is based on the memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Beaulieu Presley with Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi set to play Priscilla and Elvis Presley. Published in 1985, Presley’s intimate account of her life with Elvis became a New York Times Bestseller and an international sensation. Coppola adapted the script as well.
Insiders say Coppola had been eyeing this film for some time as her follow-up to On The Rocks and began putting the pieces together to the film off the ground by this fall. While she met with a number of actors for the Elvis role (with Elordi ultimately landing the highly coveted role), Spaeny has been her top choice from day 1 for the role of Priscilla.

The costume designer Stacey Battat has, to date, worked mostly in female-oriented contemporary indies. That's quite a perfect niche to build a design career from. Or at least it is when the women who've visually helped define your early work are such stylish talented icons themselves. Battat first made her mark on two Parker Posey features in the late Aughts (Broken English, Happy Tears). Soon after she was deep in the Julianne Moore business (Still Alice, Freeheld, What Maisie Knew). Other credits include The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her and Him and Mozart in the Jungle but it's been her partnership with writer/director Sofia Coppola that's come to define her young career.
The two began working together on the La dreamy Somewhere (2010). Battat proved invaluable to all the fashiongasms of Coppola's arguably most underrated feature The Bling Ring (2013). Then came an atypical challenge: a forgotten girls...

As usual, period dramas are the dominant genre when it comes to Best Costume Design. Jacqueline Durran is competing with herself with the extravagant Disney live-action blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast” as well as World War II drama “Darkest Hour,” which features elaborate costumes to add weight to Gary Oldman as Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Also needing some padding was Dame Judi Dench as the aging monarch in “Victoria & Abdul.” Kenneth Branagh’s new take on “Murder on the Orient Express,” featuring himself as mustache-twirling detective Hercule Poirot as well as a slimmer Dench, features a colorful assortment of characters on the mythic train from Istanbul.
Two rural southern war-time dramas are competing this year: Michael Boyd took on the period costumes for Dee Rees’ “Mudbound,” set during World War II, while Sofia Coppola’s Civil War melodrama “The Beguiled” is another strong entry from Stacey Battat.

Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, a perplexing script, and, of course, magnificent costumes—what more could you want from a film? The Beguiled, a Sofia Coppola remake based on the 1971 Clint Eastwood classic, takes place at an isolated southern girls' boarding school during the Civil War era giving you a taste (and so much more) of what it would be like being a woman of that time. There's a protective headmistress, a romantic teacher and a rebellious teen who all wouldn't be able to fully convey the female experience if it weren't for the movie's costume designer Stacey Battat. So to tie you over until the movie's release on June 30, we sat down with Stacey...

Many promising films will likely get a release in 2017, but near the top of our most-anticipated is the latest feature from Sofia Coppola. After 2013’s The Bling Ring, she has now begun production on her remake of the 1971 Don Siegel thriller The Beguiled. With Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Colin Farrell, Angourie Rice, and Addison Riecke rounding out the main ensemble, Coppola has also found a cinematographer.
After working with Edward Lachman, Lance Acord, Christopher Blauvelt, and the late Harris Savides, it’s been revealed that she’s chosen Philippe Le Sourd (The Grandmaster) to shoot the film. The Civil War-era story follows Farrell as a Union soldier held captive by the Confederates in a girls’ boarding school, where he begins to con his way into their hearts. Thanks to a handful of Instagram posts, we can now see production has kicked off in Louisiana.

Julianne Moore as Alice in Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland's candid Still Alice: "She welcomed the role without any trepidation."
Alec Baldwin's character, Julianne Moore's connection to Robert Altman's Short Cuts and Lyle Lovett's If I Had A Boat sung by Karen Elson, fame for Errol Flynn in The Last of Robin Hood, starring Kevin Kline, Dakota Fanning and Susan Sarandon are remembered. James Keach's Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me, The Time of the Harvest, Elizabeth Bishop and Bruno Barreto's Reaching For The Moon, Rita Hayworth, Marcel Proust, and Stacey Battat's costumes come into our conversation about Still Alice. Alice's children are played by Kate Bosworth, Hunter Parrish and Kristen Stewart.
Anne-Katrin Titze: You quote Elizabeth Bishop's The Art Of Losing. It's beautifully used by Alice.
Kristen Stewart as Lydia: "Lydia is away on the other coast and becomes very significant in the story.

Still Alice co-director/writer Wash Westmoreland on Julianne Moore: "She has that way of acting that has a mystery to it." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
In Still Alice, Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland stage an entrancing battle around the power of remembrance, a form of detective story on memory loss, starring Julianne Moore, who gives a mesmerizing performance as a linguistics professor diagnosed at age 50 with a rare form of Alzheimer's disease. Kate Bosworth, Kristen Stewart and Hunter Parrish play her children, who all weather the storm in their own way. Alec Baldwin, as her husband, wants to flee and stay, he fell in love with her mind and can't bear to see it go.
Julianne Moore as Alice: "Alice is terrified of her deterioration but tries to act as normal as possible. She is spinning a lot of plates."
