Argentine director Martín Turnes, whose feature “Pichuco” snagged the Argentine Film Critic Association’s Silver Condor Award for best documentary in 2015, is bringing his first full-length fiction title, “El Agrónomo,” to Sanfic Industria’s Works In Progress.
Filmed in Marcos Paz, Argentina with the support of Marcos Paz Film TV, the project is produced by Fernando Romanazzo of Buenos Aires-based Aqueronte alongside Zebra Films (“Manifesto”) and Haz Cooperativa Audiovisual.
“’El Agrónomo’ won me over with the elements it combines. It intends to establish a critique of this agro-industrial, polluting production system, without falling into empty denunciation. Martín uses an unexpected tool for this: Genre,” producer Fernando Romanazzo told Variety.
“It also motivated me. Being a promoter of sustainable and multicultural production within the audiovisual sector, together with my partner Fabiana Bepres, this project offered the possibility of utilizing that type of production method in a medium-sized fiction film, with a noteworthy cast and technical team,...

Buenos Aires-based Meikincine, sales agents for Paula Hernández’s 2020 Argentine Oscar submission “The Sleepwalkers,” has closed an exclusive agreement with Barcelona’s Harpo Entertainment for distribution in Spain of the filmmaker’s follow-up feature “Las Siamesas,” recently nominated for the best Ibero-American film of the year at the upcoming Spanish Academy Goya Awards.
The news comes hot off the heels of a high-profile deal struck by Meikincine, which just scooped the rights to Mariano Biasin’s debut feature “Sublime,” a coming-of-age drama which screened this week at Buenos Aires’ Cinemark Puerto Madero cinema to sales agents, fest heads and buyers as part of Ventana Sur’s Copia Final section for films in advanced post-production.

"Is his life at risk without the bubble?" LuxBox debuted a fest promo trailer for The Dog Who Wouldn't Be Quiet, an Argentinian drama that just premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and next stops by the Rotterdam Film Festival. This wacky B&w drama is described as "a fable that is at once impressionistic and immediate." Sebastian, a man in his thirties, works a of temporary jobs and he embraces love at every opportunity. He transforms, through a series of encounters, as the world flirts with apocalypse. Sundance adds: "Rebelling against traditional plot & structure, Katz draws insight into what acceptance and humility look like in an increasingly chaotic world. The result is a bewitching work that 'hits different' in these perplexing times." Starring Daniel Katz, Julieta Zylberberg, Valeria Lois, Mirella Pascual, Carlos Portaluppi. The film is just premiering and likely won't be released for a while, but check out the footage.

The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be Quiet
Argentina’s Ana Katz will be premiering her sixth narrative feature in 2021, The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be Quiet (El perro que no calla), reuniting with actress Julieta Zylberberg (who worked with Lucrecia Martel on The Holy Girl and with Damian Szifron in Wild Tales). She’s joined in the cast by Daniel Katz, Valeria Lois, Mirella Pascual, and Carlos Portaluppi, produced by the director and Laura Huberman from a script by first-time scribe Gonzalo Delgado on a project that is being coined by the film’s producer as a “profound and political film”.

Shooting on her sixth feature film began sometime last year and gradually completed during the Covid. The Buenos Aires born Ana Katz began her feature filmography with Musical Chairs (2002), Un Certain Regard selected A Stray Girlfriend (2007), 2011 Los Marziano, Sundance winner My Friend from the Park (2015) and finally the big winner at Karlovy Vary Florianópolis Dream before hitting El Perro que No Calla – a black & white micro project featuring Daniel Katz, Carlos Portaluppi, Facundo Gambandé, Mirella Pascual, Valeria Lois and one of our faves in the versatile Julieta Zylberberg.

It looks like no coincidence that two of the biggest announcements concerning celebrated Argentine movie directors and producers this year were their moves into drama series creation. In February, Netflix announced that K & S, producers of “Wild Tales,” “The Clan” and “El Angel,” will produce a series adaptation of legendary Argentine sci-fi graphic novel “El Eternauta,” with Bruno Stagnaro directing.
In March, El Estudio announced two series with another founding father of the New Argentine Cinema, Pablo Trapero: a U.S. series remake
of his movie “Carancho” and bio-series “Galimberti.”
Appointed president of Argentina’s film agency Incaa in December, director Luis Puenzo does enjoy government backing, but he faces a perfect storm.
Even before Covid-19 struck, Argentina sustained crippling inflation: 50% last year and in 2018, plus a plunging peso, which lost 77% of its dollar value from April 2018 and studios’ lock on prime exhibition slots.
Last month, coronavirus had halted some 30 shoots,...

Argentine writer-director Paula Hernández likes to explore what happens when characters from different worlds are thrown together. In her latest, “The Sleepwalkers,” which world-premiered in Toronto’s Platform competition before moving on to San Sebastian, the focus is on a discontented mother and her sullen, newly pubescent teen daughter, as they spend a New Year’s holiday in close quarters with three generations of extended family from the patriarchal side. , this intense family drama should see extensive festival play.
Although his wife Luisa and 14-year-old daughter Ana (striking beautiful Ornella D’elía) would prefer something different, the domineering Emilio (Luis Ziembrowski), insists on returning to his upper middle-class family’s rural manse. Surrounded by forests and streams, it’s home to his imperious widowed mother Memé (Marilu Marini), who is also hosting his brother Sergio (Daniel Hendler) and sister Inés (Valeria Lois), along with their respective broods.

The First Time Fest was created by Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward as a way to showcase new upcoming filmmakers and their works, and to get them a head start in their industry. The festival occurred on March 1st to 4th at The Players Club in New York, which was a club started by some well-known writers and actors, including Edwin Booth (John Wilkes Booth’s brother), Mark Twain, and more.
While the festival does support new filmmakers in their journey, it also awards previous filmmakers who have made names for themselves. Being that this is the first year of the festival, the first ever John Huston Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema went to Darren Aronofsky. The award is named in honor of John Huston as he was a esteemed member of The Players Club, as well as considered to be one of the most influential writer, actor, director and producers of all times.
