Chatting with /Film's Max Evry over a recently released special edition Blu-ray of the 2015 documentary "Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini," the conversation turned, naturally, to horror and one of Savini's most well-known makeup fx contributions, George Romero's 1982 horror anthology "Creepshow." The classic October viewing staple hits its 40th anniversary this year and while many anthologies have followed in the EC Comics-inspired footsteps since, few have the lasting power of the Stephen King-penned original.
Filled with Tom Savini-engineered special effects for each of its five segments, "Creepshow" thrilled audiences with headless matriarchs, a creature-in-a-crate, a moss man, waterlogged ghouls, and cockroach kills. The fans love it, but Savini credits his longtime friend and the film's director George A. Romero for its legendary status. Savini tells Evry:
"George Romero. I mean, that's the simplest answer to that question. If you've seen "Night of the Living Dead...

All the way back in 1982, Stephen King and the late great George A. Romero colleborated on the first Creepshow film, an anthology-based homage to the horror comic books of the 1950s. It’s become a cult-classic, a film remembered fondly by most. It is, even all these years later, still a wonderful movie. 2019 sees Creepshow return, but this time as an anthology television show that will air on the horror streaming platform, Shudder. I was immediately excited about this, being a big fan of Creepshow (and Creepshow 2 for that matter), and had an opportunity to check out the very first episode of this brand-spanking-new series.

One of the many reasons George A. Romero's Creepshow continues to thrill and chill horror fans more than 35 years after its initial release is thanks to the makeup effects by Tom Savini (who also played one of the movie's garbagemen in the memorable wraparound segment). It's fitting, then, that Savini has been announced as the director of one of the episodes of Shudder's new Creepshow series, based on a story by Joe Hill, who played Billy in the film's wraparound segment.
Savini will direct an episode adaptation of Joe Hill's "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain," working from a screenplay by Jason Ciaramella.

Back in 2008, Liam Neeson went full ‘beast mode’ playing Bryan Mills in the action thriller Taken. He reinvented himself as a middle-aged father, loving husband, and retired CIA agent with a passion for brutally merking bad guys without hesitation. Ten years later, Neeson’s still in the ass-kicking business, and why not? After all he is one of the founding members of the geri-action genre and clearly age is just a number… And his age is slowly catching up with his on-screen bodycount. But there’s no shame in that, the Irishman’s right-hook is still as strong as ever.
The Commuter is the fourth team-up between Neeson and Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra, with their second outing being the similarly themed transportation nightmare on a plane Non-Stop (2014). But this time around, the boys are playing with a locomotive train-set in upstate New York, and of course mayhem ensues.
The setup is simple.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A lazy, insulting xerox of better movies about Liam Neeson growling into cell phones at enigmatic villains. Devoid of tension and mystery, and rife with plotholes that derail the trip. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
women’s participation in this film

Remember a few years ago, when Liam Neeson was on a Non-Stop transatlantic flight between New York and London and mysterious nefarious types texted him to say that they’d kill a passenger every 20 minutes unless $150 million was transferred to their account? And how he cares about stopping this because he’s law enforcement — the flight’s air marshal — and doesn’t want anyone to die?
Well, The Commuter is Completely Different. Here, Liam Neeson is on a Train traveling from New York, yes, but only up the Hudson Valley. And it makes many Stops at stations.

Chicago – Sometimes you’re just in the mood for a good old Liam Neeson ass-kicker… and “The Commuter” fits that bill. It asks, damn near requires, you to leave your brain safely at the station, but it moves too fast that you don’t have much time to think about it. It’s ludicrous, dumb and fun entertainment for January.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Neeson is an ex-cop this time, now selling life insurance to try to put his kid through college. But he’s just lost his job, and after putting away enough liquid courage he boards his usual train home to tell his wife. He’s accosted by a pretty and well dressed woman (Vera Farmiga) who offers him a proposition. Find a passenger on the train, and he’ll get 100 thousand dollars in cash. Otherwise, all bets are off and his wife and son might not live through his commute home.

No matter how senseless the plots of his movies, Jaume Collet-Serra can direct the hell out of them – and The Commuter is no exception. The Spanish filmmaker, who wickedly used Blake Lively as shark bait in The Shallows, keeps the tension on such a high burner that you won't realize the whole thing doesn't add up until after you leave the theater. It teams Collet-Serra with star Liam Neeson for the fourth time, following Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night. Given the title, you might think The Commuter is merely Taken on a train.

From the moment Pierre Morel’s Taken unlocked a very particular set of skills in Liam Neeson, the actor’s résumé has been a roller-coaster ride of triumphant highs (The Grey) and disappointing lows (Takens 2 and 3). But a patchy record has in no way cooled Neeson’s interest in the action genre, as he’ll soon be back, back, back, as an unassuming insurance salesman for The Commuter.
Pitched as North by Northwest meets Strangers on a Train, Jaume Collet-Serra’s high-speed thriller was originally slated for a release in October, but we now have confirmation that The Commuter‘s journey won’t begin in earnest until January 12th, 2018. That’s a date it currently shares with Paramount’s animated flick Sherlock Gnomes, White Boy Rick and The Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which was hit with a delay of its own following Dylan O’Brien’s serious set accident.

Patrick Wilson has climbed aboard Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Commuter, joining both Liam Neeson and The Conjuring co-star Vera Farmiga.
The action-thriller, which is already lensing in London, marks the fourth collaboration between Collet-Serra and Neeson, following a relatively hot streak that covers Unknown, Non-Stop and last year’s Run All Night. StudioCanal and Lionsgate have pledged support to The Commuter, appointing Philip de Blasi and Byron Willinger to hash out a script that will surely have Neeson back in ass-kicking mode.
Indeed, out of the three collaborations, Collet-Serra’s latest is reminiscent of Non-Stop in that it appears to compress much of the high-octane action into a single location where Neeson, embarking on his usual 9-to-5, is pulled into an intense situation out of the blue by a mysterious stranger (Farmiga).
It’s one that involves Neeson’s insurance salesman scrambling to identify a select passenger before the train reaches its last stop.

It’s easy to carry a debate on the pros and cons of adapting 1984 yet again — questions about timing, relevancy, and such all serve as the backbone — but, debate though you may, Imagine Entertainment seem to be taking this all the way forward. Deadline reports that, this time around, George Orwell will have his iconic story of oppression and rebellion translated by Noah Oppenheim — writer of Gary Ross‘ potential Houdini film, the pending WarGames remake, a remake of Snabba Cash, and the Spielberg-produced Jackie Onassis biopic. Or, in other words, nothing you’ve yet to actually see.
It’s a good step for the project, sure, though not necessarily one that means a whole lot; frankly, I’d like to hear about a director or its stars before getting a better idea of what 1984 may bring forth. While all the work being thrown at Oppenheim‘s feet is something of...

Variety are reporting the Casey Affleck may be be the second Affleck brother to don angel wings. Affleck is talks to play the angel Gabriel in the big screen adaptation of John Milton’s 17th Century poem Paradise Lost, which comes from director Alex Proyas.
If Affleck does sign on the dotted line he’ll join Bradley Cooper (pictured above) and Ben Walker who play archangels Lucifer and Michael respectively, and Djimon Hounsou who is set to play Abdiel, the angel of death.
Lucifer and Michael, God’s greatest archangels, share the bond of extraordinary friendship until God produces his greatest creation: Man. Unable to remain subservient to God if it means bowing down to humanity, Lucifer begins his dark descent and is cast out – only to plot his revenge.
Paradise Lost has been throught numerous re-writes, Stuart Hazeldine penned a draft from the original script by Byron Willinger and Philip de Blasi.

Strong casting continues as The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford and The Killer Inside Me's Casey Affleck is joining the fight for good, as he's in negotiations to play the angel Gabriel in Legendary Pictures' Paradise Lost, says Variety. Alex Proyas (The Crow) is directing the heavenly epic, which is a big-budget adaptation of John Milton's 17th Century poem. Bradley Cooper and Ben Walker star as warring archangels Lucifer and Michael, while Djimon Hounsou co-stars as Abdiel, the angel of death. Rufus Sewell, who starred in Proyas' underrated Dark City, also stars. A six-winged angel, Gabriel was created by God to serve as a messenger. Stuart Hazeldine developed the primary draft of the screenplay, originally written by Byron Willinger and Philip de Blasi. Lawrence Kasdan provided a polish as well as Ryan Condal, who delivered the most recent draft. Project will fall under Legendary's overall agreement with Warner Bros.
