On Sunday’s “American Idol,” three of the Top 20 contestants were eliminated: Kate Barnette, Cristina Corteras (Bumbly) and Shawn Robinson. They came so close to making the Top 14 who get to sing for America’s voters on the live shows starting April 14. But they didn’t make the cut with the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — who sent them home.
The seven contenders in Group 1 to get through are: Laci Booth,Walker Burroughs, Laine Hardy, Ashley Hess, Uché Ndubizu, Riley Thompson and Madison VanDenburg. (Be sure to vote for your favorite of these season 17 Top 14 artists.)
We asked you which of the three to be sent packing was most deserving of a place in the Top 14. Your overwhelming pick is Kate, a 23-year-old charmer from Kennesaw Ga, who captured 45% of the vote as of this writing. Bumbly, a 27-year-old from New York City, is second with a respectable 32%. The smoldering performance by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga at the 91st Academy Awards catapulted their single Shallow to the top spot on the latest edition of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, which was released today. Shallow, which soared up all the way from the No. 21 position on last week’s chart, had previously peaked at No. 5 on the chart back in October.
Cooper, who was a music novice before his experience on A Star is Born, now has a claim to fame that has eluded plenty of elite recording superstars, among them Bruce Springsteen, James Brown, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pat Benatar, the Backstreet Boys, Sheryl Crow, New Edition, One Direction, the Pointer Sisters, and Bob Dylan. Unlike Cooper, none of those artists has a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100, which has been charting America’s hit songs for six decades.

In an eclectic career spanning half a century, Wim Wenders continues to channel the zeitgeist: his romantic thriller “Submergence” recently opened in the U.S. and his documentary “Pope Francis: A Man of His Word” is set to premiere at Cannes.
Wenders helped define New German Cinema with his road-movie trilogy starting in 1974, “Alice in the Cities,” “Wrong Move” and “Kings of the Road”). Over the years, he has also brought to the big screen timely social commentary, a unique perspective on the American experience, and exuberant celebrations of music and dance in “Buena Vista Social Club,” “The Soul of a Man” and “Pina.” The filmmaker is also busy restoring past films, including 1987 classic “Wings of Desire.”
Variety first mentioned Wenders in an Aug. 26, 1970 report about financing for his upcoming project “The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick” (based on a novel and referred to as “Goal Keeper Frightened...

There is a lot of music in Suicide Squad. In the first few minutes, there's actually a different classic tune for each new scene. Characters are introduced through the soundtrack, and that's mostly jukebox staples in addition to the songs on the official compilation album released in connection with the DC Comics adaptation. We previously shared the track list for the soundtrack album, which does include some of the previously released material, like Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son." It also has Harley Quinn's intro song, "You Don't Own Me," though in the movie it's the Lesley Gore original whereas the version on the album is by Grace with G-Eazy. The list below of every song in the movie in the order of...

In his 1969 short film 3 American LP’s, the 24-year-old Wim Wenders, in the kind of feat of earnestness that can befit a young man, attempts to match his two greatest interests” America’s landscapes and its rock-and-roll music. If we’re to pick perhaps the most endearing eye-roller from this “rockist” mission statement, one can look no further than Wenders describing a Creedence Clearwater Revival album as being “like chocolate.”
But this isn’t necessarily an atypical moment in his filmography, as Wenders has always skirted the line of, for lack of a better word, corniness — if not just telegraphing his influences to at-times-obnoxious degrees, also with a kind of sentimentality both formally and politically speaking. Consider Wings of Desire‘s glossy look, which could so easily be reconfigured into a perfume-commercial aesthetic, or even just the title of one of his later, forgotten films; The End of Violence.

Midnight Special
Director: Jeff Nichols // Writer: Jeff Nichols
Jeff Nichols has been a steadily rising director since his excellent 2007 debut, Shotgun Stories, which first united him with star Michael Shannon, who has gone on to appear in all his features since. 2011’s Take Shelter, starring Shannon and Jessica Chastain, premiered at Sundance before hitting Cannes, while 2012’s Mud played in the main competition at Cannes before heading to Sundance. Each film has seen a significant increase in production value, so we’re not surprised to find Nichols finally working on a studio financed production with Midnight Special, starring Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, and returning cast members Shannon and Sam Shepard. A sci-fi film concerning a father and son that go on the run after discovering his child has special powers, this recalls a heyday of adult studio genre films from the 1980s, perhaps Stephen King’s Firestarter (1984)? The Cool Ones (1967). Directed by Gene Nelson. Written by Nelson, Joyce Geller, Robert Kaufman.
Nothing ages more quickly and more embarrassingly than a movie or TV show which had worked so hard to be cool in its time. You disagree? Feathered hair, big lapels. Oh, God – mullets! You gonna honestly tell me that stuff still works for you as anything but a laugh-getter?
Lead times for some movies are so long, some crazes burn out between the pitch meeting and opening weekend. Roller disco was dying (if not dead) by the time Roller Boogie (1979) and Xanudu (1980) hit theaters, and did anybody still care about The Village People when Can’t Stop the Music (1980) had movie-goers wishing they could?
The only thing even more embarrassing is a movie that’s lethally uncool even before the first frame of film runs through the camera, not because it’s late to the party,...

Former Creedence Clearwater Revival front man John Fogerty is ready to tell his story in book form. Little, Brown announced yesterday that the singer-songwriter's memoir will come out in 2014 and, according to Fogerty, "tell the story of how I fought — hard — to maintain my artistic integrity in the face of opposing forces." We're just hoping to find out what's going on in that bathroom on the right.

Little White Lies (Les Petits Mouchoirs) is a uniquely French ensemble film that thinks it.s the Gallic version of The Big Chill. Those who love French films will be entertained, but I couldn.t get past one early improbable scene that buttresses one of several plot lines. Tant pis.
The movie follows a group of middle-aged friends who follow through on their vacation plans after one of them, Ludo (Jean Dujardin, who has about as many lines as he did in The Artist), is critically injured in a car crash. Their dilemma is very inconvenient and quickly resolved. They rationalize that a beachside toast to Ludo will have a greater net benefit than keeping vigil in Paris so off they go.
Regular fellow Movie Snobs know I don.t write book reports so I.m not going to break down each character and plot point.

Everywhere we go music follows us. We should never overlook music’s role in our lives, and even more so in film. Listen and you’ll learn and experience a great deal more. Sunday Soundtrack takes a look at movies that feature memorable sounds that could be heard on the original soundtrack release or in the film itself.

East Rutherford, N.J. — Bruce Springsteen celebrated his 63rd birthday onstage until nearly 2 a.m. Sunday, joined at the end by his hearty mom.
Adele Springsteen danced and sang background to "Twist and Shout," walking offstage with her son and his band at nearly 2. Her only concession to age was a pair of hastily made earplugs.
She watched as her son cut a giant cake in the shape of a guitar, passing out pieces to some audience members.
His show in the open-air MetLife Stadium was delayed three hours Saturday by authorities because of a downpour and worries about lightning. Thousands of fans clustered on indoor ramps waiting for the rain to stop.
When it did, Springsteen and his E Street Band took the stage at 10:30 p.m. to the strains of Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour," a song they performed when the clock hit that mark.

"The Voice" is back for Season 3 and it really does look like three's the charm for the NBC reality singing competition. Christina Aguilera graduated from leather diapers to leather daisy dukes and with that, she's tuned down her "woo's" and irritating factor. Cee Lo upgraded from mohawks and latex to some silk. With that, he kept his creepy underage lady pick-up tricks to a minimum and his weird new show pet -- in this case, Lady, a Moluccan cockatoo -- was only exploited once. And in general, there was less catty bickering, car salesmanship and the sob stories weren't forced.
But, of course, some things never change -- Christina Aguilera's boobs were out in full effect, Christina Milian was wearing a horrendous dress and talking about "trending worldwide," Carson Daly was sufficiently awkward and there was also a gender ambiguous singer and a "I'm so pretty, but it was...

Jennifer Hudson and John Fogerty have collaborated on a new version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's hit 'Proud Mary'. Fogerty enlisted Hudson for his upcoming duets album Wrote a Song for Everyone, which sees the the legendary rock vocalist recording new versions of his classic hits. Hudson is believed to have met with the legendary singer in New Orleans earlier this month to commence work on the 'Proud Mary' remake. 'Proud Mary' was originally released by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1969, but the track became a hit for Tina Turner a year later. Foo Fighters, Kid Rock and My Morning Jacket will also guest on Fogerty's new record. Wrote a Song For Everyone is due for release on October 9, three years after his last album The Blue Ridge Rangers Ride Again (more)...

Ryan Seacrest is in a tux - and American Idol has a winner! Season 11's finalists, Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips, both had a big night on Wednesday. In addition to seeing their fellow top 12 contestants (and future tour mates) perform with the likes of Chaka Khan and Neil Diamond, they heard performances by some of the biggest names in music today - Rihanna, Reba McEntire, judge Jennifer Lopez. They also shared the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live stage with legends: Phillip sang "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and "Bad Moon Rising" with Creedence Clearwater Revival's John Fogerty.

Unlike the actual "American Idol" results show, we don't intend to keep you in suspense about the winner with two hours of filler. After 132 million votes cast last night (really, people?), the 11th winner of the juggernaut reality competition is ...
Phillip Phillips.
The White Guy With Guitar strikes again! Looks like that stereotypical streak on "American Idol" isn't being broken any time soon. Whatever else you might say about P-squared (and I fully expect you to in the comments section), the ladies seem to love him. He's got a radio-ready sound -- especially with his Mumford & Sons-esque winner's song, "Home" -- and he probably has the greatest chance of making an impact on the charts, as so many previous "American Idol" winners have failed to do.
Did he have the best vocals, an impressive range or the ability to work the stage? No. But that doesn't preclude him from being a successful artist,...

“Why so serious?”
This iconic question, delivered by the late Heath Ledger in his astonishing inhabitation of The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s smash super-hero epic, The Dark Knight, could aptly be posed to the new breed of “Summer Movies”.
There was once a time, before the days of Ipads, Twitter, and the Dorito-shelled taco, that films released in the summer were synonymous with terms like, “fun”, “cheesy”, and “light-hearted”. They didn’t reinvent the wheel, but they didn’t need to. Yeah sure, the dialogue was pretty corny, and the plot was more often than not ridiculous, and there was also no denying the whole formulaic, rote nature of the affair, but all this was acknowledged at the outset.

Battleship
Directed by: Peter Berg
Cast: Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Hamish Linklater
Running Time: 2 hrs 15 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: May 18, 2012
Plot: A naval lieutenant (Kitsch) must use strategy to defeat invading alien watercraft on the ocean.
Who’S It For?: The articulate fellow who called me a “ferry princess” for my negative Act of Valor review is going to l-o-v-e Battleship; this is the military pride parade that moviegoers have only been peppered up for by Michael Bay’s Transformers films. The only people this movie is bound to offend are those who are “Battleship” purists.
Expectations: It’s no small task to be the latest military-focused Hasbro toy movie of the summer. I was curious to see how big director Berg was going to take this board game adaptation.
Scorecard (0-10)

Say what you want about Ryan Seacrest, but dude has impeccable timing. For a brief moment during American Idol‘s Season 11 Top 4 performance telecast, I feared the hardest-working host on TV was about to propose to girlfriend Julianne Hough (and merge the powerful Idol and DWTS royal houses in the process).
But nope, Seacrest was just kidding around — and simultaneously promoting Hough’s new movie, Rock of Ages (so no hard feelings, okay?).
I, for one, was relieved. Not only would popping the question during Idol have been tackier than a Randy Jackson accessory — honestly, dawg has to stop trying...

Joshua Ledet performs on "American Idol"

Wednesday night's episode of "American Idol" offered definitive proof of what happens when you give the kids the keys to the Lambo: they crash and burn.
On an evening when the themes were as vague as any we can recall (California Dreamin? Songs You Wish You'd Written?), the top four either went obscure or doubled-down on the most obvious choices possible, which made for an uneven night.
A few things became crystal clear, though: based on the girl squeals, Phillip Phillips could win this thing in a walk-off without singing another note as long as he loses his razor, smiles and keeps clothes shopping at J.C. Penny. Similarly, Joshua Ledet pretty much has it in the bag, while Hollie Cavanagh...

We're down to the final four "American Idol" contenders, so close and yet so far (two whole weeks) away from discovering which Coke-swilling, Ford-driving hopeful will take the prize.
This week, in addition to a pair of duets and a cringeworthy "Rock of Ages" promotional tie-in performance of "Waiting For a Girl Like You," our contestants tackled songs (mostly tangentially) inspired by or related to California, and tracks they wish they had written (even though the actual songwriters got little-to-no credit in favor of the recording artists who made them famous).
Without further ado, here's our rundown of the Top 4's performances.
Phillip Phillips
"Have You Ever Seen the Rain"
If "Idol" follows its four-year trend of white boys with guitars taking the top spot, "Idol" might as well hand Phillip the crown now, though it's vastly undeserved when his competition includes vocalists as talented as Jessica and Joshua. This...

The Top 4 hit the 'Idol' stage with one thing in mind -- getting closer to the finals. Who deserves to make the Top 3? The Top 4 took on songs with a California Dreamin' and Songs You Wish You Wrote themes. With such a wide-open second theme, the Idols had a plethora of songs that they could choose. But with the notoriously bad song choices the Idol hopefuls often make, did it turn into a great episode of performances or was it a bust? And why did they sing so many songs that were just on The Voice? Phillip Phillips: “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” by Creedence Clearwater Revival The death spot this week has been given out to the one and only Phillip Phillips. Do the producers really want to see him go home? This performance was leaps and bounds better than anything he did last week, but it wasn't spectacular.

The first theme for "American Idol" this week is California Dreamin', which means songs from artists/bands from California or songs about California, which is kind of weird, but then the back half is Songs The Idols Wish They Had Written, so basically Anything We Have the Rights To.
Tonight, J.Lo looks sparkly, Steven Tyler looks Vegas-y while showing off his old-man chest and Randy is missing the other three voice parts from his barbershop quartet. Seacrest is looking quite dapper in a gray suit with a striped tie and yellow pocket square. It's better than the disco-ain't-dead-no-tie-big-hair look he sports sometimes.
1. Phillip Phillips, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," Creedence Clearwater Revival
Ok, now if anybody should be doing Ccr, it's Phillip. This week, he's actually got a handle on the melody. It's not pitch-perfect, but it's much closer than that "Time of the Season" debacle. Also, the...

This week’s American Idol performance show was a little like a Michael Bay action movie. There were explosions (courtesy of Jessica Sanchez). There were laws of nature and logic being defied (hi, Joshua Ledet). There was a sly, winking heatthrob and a damsel tied to the train tracks (played by Phillip Phillips and Hollie Cavanagh), as well an unspeakable villain — code name: Dr. Yo! — hellbent on leading everyone and everything on a path to ultimate destruction.

For the "American Idol" Top 4, Phillip Phillips took on Creedence Clearwater Revival and Damien Rice. His call for Ccr was "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and it went really well. It's not a song that has you jumping out of your chair, but his vocal was solid and he had no trouble staying on the melody line, so that's good.
The judges liked it, with Jennifer Lopez praising his "Joe Cocker quality" that she claims she hasn't heard before - but we think he has sounded quite a bit like Joe Cocker all along. Either way, his first song went really well.
The second song was "Volcano" and it was a wonderful choice for Phillip, but we fear it's a little obscure for Idol voters at this stage of the game. Steven Tyler summed it up perfectly with, "I heard the musician that time, man. You just sang like...

Thank heavens for Ray Chew and his penchant for leaking song spoilers. Earlier today, the American Idol bandleader revealed the 10 tracks that will comprise tonight’s Top 4 performance show, built around the dual themes of California Dreamin’ (Songs by Arists from the Golden State) and The Song I Wish I Wrote (er, presumably a track each contestant really, really likes?).

Randy Jackson isn't as infuriating when I think of him as less of a person, and more as a fountain of nonsense. Oh, look at the fountain! Spitty spit spit! Nonsense aplenty! Great party, Diane! But mysteriously, Randy abandoned his love of nonsense for a split second during last night's results show when he noted one truth: This may be the best final five in Idol history. Think of it. Season eight? Had Danny Gokey. Season three? Had George Huff. Even season six, which featured my candidate for the greatest American Idol contestant history -- Ms. Melinda Doolittle -- featured Blake Lewis in the Top 2. In other words: Season 11, you're the top.
And that makes this week's elimination damn difficult. Which of the five remaining troubadours shuffled on out of the Idol murderdome? Was it Phillip, Jessica, Hollie, Skylar, or Joshua? We reveal all below.

This week’s American Idol theme of Brit Pop produced some of the strongest vocal performances of the season. Alas, after 60 million votes cast -- according to host Ryan Seacrest -- one of the Top 5 got the boot. Los Angeles (AP) — It was an unfortunate night for Skylar Laine (far right) on "American Idol."The 18-year-old country rocker from Brandon, Miss., added her twangy sensibilities to Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son" and Dusty Springfield's "Say You Love Me" on Wednesday's show.It was revealed Thursday on the Fox singing contest that she received the fewest viewer votes.Laine was joined at the bottom by Hollie Cavanagh. The 18-year-old balladeer from McKinney, Texas, opened Wednesday's installment with Ike and Tina Turner's "River Deep Mountain High," and later dialed it down with the Leona Lewis hit "Bleeding Love."The other singers remaining in the competition are Joshua Ledet, of Westlake, La.; Phillip Phillips, of Leesburg, Ga.; and Jessica Sanchez, of San Diego. The four remaining finalists will return to the stage next week. There was some dissension in the American Idol ranks of TV Fanatic regarding last Thursday's elimination of Elise Testone. Some of you were quite fired up about Hollie vs. Elise. I like that kind of passion!
This week, the remaining five contestants have vowed to bring their "A" games to the dual-themed night. We'll hear music from the 60s in one round and Brit Pop in another. Jimmy has called in his friend Steven Van Zandt to mentor the contestants.
Here goes Round One: The 60s
Hollie Cavanagh is up first singing "River Deep Mountain High." Steven and Jimmy tell her to stop trying to please people when she's performing, which is exactly what J.Lo's been telling her for weeks. Stop thinking so much! It's definitely a nice, uptempo way to open the night. Steven said "thank you, Lord." J.Lo said she bit into the song and attacked it.

The theme this week on "American Idol" are two-fold - the first song is the 1960s and the second one is Brit pop. It isn't our favorite week for the Idols, though Jessica Sanchez does show once again how she's head and shoulders above the rest of them talent-wise.
1. Hollie Cavanagh, "River Deep, Mountain High," Tina Turner
This is a nice choice for her because it's a big song, like she always shines on, but it's up-tempo, so it's not just another stand-there-and-sing ballad. Hollie also looks to be having (gasp!) fun, which is not something she always comes across as having. The sparks of personality should really help her out. The chorus is particularly good for her and then she's kind of breaking it down like a go-go dancer, straight out of the 1960s. Fabulous. Also, we really dig the horn section.
Other than "Rolling in the Deep," that might be Hollie's best performance,...

The finish line is in sight - and as the final five contestants fight to be the winner of American Idol, the competition is fierce. Just like last week, the contestants brought top-notch performances, tackling classic songs from the 1960s and the British pop songbook. No one seemed to fight harder than Hollie Cavanagh. After another appearance in the bottom last week, she delivered Wednesday with a high-energy version of Ike and Tina Turner's rock-soul rave-up "River Deep-Mountain High," which found her shimmying and shaking across the stage while wearing sky-high heels. For her second tune, she brought tender...

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 7, Episode 16 of The CW's "Supernatural," "Out With The Old."
What initially appeared to be a typically humorous, filler episode of "Supernatural" actually gave us some big developments on the mythology side of the show, as one of the leviathans dropped their master plan (or at least their PR-friendly master plan) on Sam and Dean at the end of the episode. So what do these ancient, terrifying, people-eating monsters want to do now that they're out of their cage?
Cure cancer, apparently.
Yeah, I'm not buying it either, and I'm fairly sure there are easier ways to go about solving one of mankind's biggest problems than snacking on us and surreptitiously buying up obscure pieces of real estate to use as research labs. So, what's their real agenda? I'm wondering if paranoid Frank uncovered the truth and brought the wrath...

Chicago – The developers of “Rock Band 3” have surely heard the bell-ringers who claim that the music game genre is dead and have accepted the challenge presented to them. People have been proclaiming rock to be dead for decades only to be proven wrong by an amazing new release. Does “Rock Band 3” disprove the naysayers and reinvigorate the oversaturated genre?
Video Game Rating: 4.5/5.0
It’s hard to see those who have given up on the “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” games being dragged back to the genre by a title that is essentially founded on what made music games popular in the first place. In other words, if you’ve given up on rock to the point that you don’t even like the sound of a guitar any more, there’s no new album that’s going to change the sound to your ear. “Rock Band 3” is an expansion of...

There are plenty of movies that depict drug use, but often it's just a prop, a shortcut -- a character does drugs on screen because he or she is bad, or out of control, or doomed, or simply not to be trusted. The effects are exaggerated, the consequences over the top or unrealistic. And so we felt driven to make this list, to sort through countless films to find drug scenes, some famous, some not, that have a ring of authenticity to them. The 30 scenes we picked are funny, sad, outrageous and sometimes awful, and they're certainly not all depictions of drug use as fun, but we feel pretty certain of their legit greatness. In other words? No "Reefer Madness" here.
