Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have released the first photo of Scarlett Johansson as Major in their co-production live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Shooting has started in Wellington, New Zealand, and the press release came with this official synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “Ghost In The Shell” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
I've never read the original manga series or seen the anime feature, so I'm going into this one with very little context. Hopefully director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman) will focus more heavily on the story this time around; I'm still interested in seeing him put his visual skills to good use,...

“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Into the Woods” and “Inherent Vice” are among the nominees for the 16th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, the CDG announced on Wednesday.
So is “Selma,” which ended a 0-for-5 drought and picked up its first guild nomination of the year.
The guild chooses nominees in three separate categories: Excellence in Contemporary Film, Excellence in Period Film and Excellence in Fantasy Film. In recent years the Cdg has typically nominated three or four of the films that will go on to receive Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design – and in virtually every case, they’ve come...

The Costume Designers Guild joined the guild chorus Wednesday morning with a list of nominees across three categories: contemporary, period and fantasy designs. On the list, and finally joining the guild party, is "Selma" from legendary outfitter Ruth E. Carter. It's the first guild mention for the film so far and obviously a warranted one. Carter was joined on the period side by "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Inherent Vice" (yay!) and "The Theory of Everything." Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what makes "Interstellar" a contemporary film rather than a fantasy film (which is how the art directors classified it). Either way, I'm sure the team is happy to be included. I can't believe, though, that "Mr. Turner" has been excluded from both this list and the art directors'. Though it feels like this kind of thing has happened before, only to be righted by the Academy.

Japanese-Brazilian fashion designer Jum Nakao is fascinated by paper. He sees the material as both "very ephemeral, very fragile" and, with the right words scribbled across it, powerful enough to change the world. So when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences asked Nakao to create a piece celebrating the opening of its upcoming "Hollywood Costume," the artist naturally went back to the page. The assignment: Design and construct a dress inspired by the 2006 period drama "Marie Antoinette." The result: A lavish gown composed entirely of pages from Sofia Coppola's script. In the below video, Nakao slices, curls, frills, and stitches the basic Courier-imbued pages into something worthy of the big screen. Waxing poetic on the costuming art, Nakao says, "A costume is like a pixel in a picture. All of the pixels are important, not just the costume, the set or the lighting. When you are inside a perfect costume,...

In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! Costume design is perhaps my favorite below-the-line Oscar category to analyze. That's partly because the craft itself is so integrally tied into the development of narrative, character and performance, but also because this voting branch can get so frisky with their choices. This year's field contains two former winners, two first-time nominees and one recurring bridesmaid, and it's an attractive collection -- ranging from rags to riches, from 19th-century England to 1970s New Jersey. It is, however, a field that demonstrates the Academy's overwhelming bias toward period work in this category -- it's nice when they find room for contemporary and/or fantasy work,...

What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

Here is a brief extract from editor Chris Laverty’s third ‘Fabric of Cinema’ column for international periodical Arts Illustrated. The main reason for a plug is the subject matter discussed: colour, without doubt one of the most fascinating aspects of theoretical costume study. Colour is so open to interpretation that any occasion costume designers dare to use it with intentional meaning constitutes a brave move. One of the finest costume events of the year so far, Stoker, provides just such an example. Costumers Kurt and Bart deliberately incorporated colour as a form of expression to be read alongside the film’s similarly intentional production design.
A preview of the Arts Illustrated piece ‘Colour the Narrative’ is included below. To get the entire magazine either download the issue online or subscribe to the hard copy:
‘Artistic interpretation of colour is entirely subjective. Crudely, it is based on cultural, spiritual, or even religious beliefs.

I wasn't expecting Jean-Marc Vallee's Dallas Buyers Club to open the way it does. A skinny cowboy goes a round with two prostitutes under the rodeo grandstand just as a rider falls and is severely injured. The scene soon blurs into black, revealing the film's title. Next, the same cowboy, a brash, but far from intimidating Matthew McConaughey as Ron Woodroof holds court and a wad of cash as he takes bets on the next ride. It's 1986 and while this Texas electrician is concerning himself with bad bets and the next lady he's going to bed, he's about to be blindsided with a disease he attributes to "pole smokers" and a variety of other derogatory terms he can think of for the homosexual population. To say he doesn't make a great first impression, or come off as a man we're willing to care for, is an understatement, but this is...

Entertainment Weekly has posted an interview with Dallas Buyers Club star Jared Leto along with the new picture of him in the film as Rayon, offering a slight bit of visual evidence as to the transformation he went through for the role. He tells the mag he stopped counting how much weight he lost "somewhere between 30 and 40 pounds" and that he remained in character from the first day he stepped on set to the last. No surprise to me considering I moved him straight to the top of my Best Supporting Actor charts shortly after seeing, and loving, the film at the Toronto Film Festival. Leto has a supporting role in the film (though many will argue he steals every scene) opposite Matthew McConaughey who plays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. Ron's path to...
