Exclusive: One of the most obvious but routinely encountered hazards for a growing distributor is over-reach: buying or marketing beyond your means. So far, that’s a pitfall UK outfit Altitude Films has avoided with aplomb.
Set up by former Optimum Releasing founder Will Clarke in 2012, the carefully managed integrated firm, comprising distribution, sales and production, is coming off its biggest year to date, despite the challenging UK landscape. Four movies crossed $1M for the distribution arm in 2017: Moonlight (which took a company record $6M), Loving Vincent ($1.4M), The Florida Project ($1.3M) and Lady Macbeth (1.1M). Six of the company’s top ten movies have been released in the last 12 months.
Much of the growing distribution slate is made up of rising UK talent (Michael Pearce’s Toronto drama Beast is released in around 70 screens this weekend), festival favorites and commercially-minded documentaries...

Satellite event planned live from Hockney’s Los Angeles studio.
Picturehouse Entertainment has acquired Randall Wright’s feature documentary on artist David Hockney and will open it across the UK on Nov 28.
The launch of Hockney will be driven by an exclusive preview at cinemas around the UK, followed by a satellite Q&A with David Hockney live from his studio in Los Angeles on Nov 25.
The 77-year-old artist granted unprecedented access to his personal archive of photographs and films for the documentary for the first time.
An important contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century and is perhaps most famous for his series of paintings of swimming pools, including 1967 work A Bigger Splash.

Having arrived from Glasgow the night before, and fresh from an early morning cast and crew screening of his latest movie, John McKay was set for a day of interviews when we met him in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.
The film in question, Not Another Happy Ending, was due to close the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival the following night with a star-studded closing gala at the city’s Festival Theatre.
Shot primarily in Glasgow, McKay’s film tells the story of a writer struggling to complete her second novel. Literally haunted by her impatient heroine, Jane Lockhart (Karen Gillan) is desperate to escape the two-book contract with her publisher, as she is still smarting from his decision to change the title of her debut behind her back.
Conceived almost five years ago by David Solomons, the original script was passed on to John McKay by the agent they shared. Alongside...

> Pulp storm second night at Brixton Academy
British Film Company founder Steve Milne said; "Music has been a big part of my life and we are delighted to be able to support this exciting project.
"It's the second feature documentary the new company has backed after BAFTA-nominated McCullin and the second music project after [Belle & Sebastian frontman] Stuart Murdoch's God Help The Girl, which is currently in post[-production]."
Despite previously hinting at plans for new material, Cocker more recently said that the band have no plans to record new songs.
"We haven't got anything planned after the New Year... we'll just be cruising off into the sunset. Seems poetic,...

Molinaire managing director Julie Parmenter has told Screen about how business at the UK post-production house has turned around since being placed in administration last summer.
When Parmenter took over as managing director at London-based post-production house Molinare in June last year, the ex-global head of sales and operations at Rolls-Royce was coming into a business in severe difficulty.
Molinare, the outfit that had posted such features as Moon, The King’s Speech and Man On Wire, had been placed in administration by previous owners, Indian outfit Century Communications, in the summer of 2012.
A consortium led by former owner Steve Milne and independent private equity group Next Wave Partners bought the majority of Molinare’s assets from the administrators and resurrected the company.
Renewed focus
Parmenter and her team immediately began slimming down the business.
“We took two of the buildings, not three, because we needed to prune back to make it stronger,” Parmenter told Screen...

While I've yet to see the doc myself (I reference Claire Denis' White Material when I think of what the film might hold narratively), when the Cinema Eye Honor Noms were released I was surprised to see that, despite the positive buzz, Lucy Bailey and Andrew Thompson's Mugabe and the White African only manage to grab one nomination. Clearly the film is a favorite for the 2009 edition of the Ida Awards - it picked up three nominations in the Feature Documentary, ABCNews VideoSource Award an the Pare Lorentz Award categories. - While I've yet to see the doc myself (I reference Claire Denis' White Material when I think of what the film might hold narratively), when the Cinema Eye Honor Noms were released I was surprised to see that, despite the positive buzz, Lucy Bailey and Andrew Thompson's Mugabe and the White African only manage to grab one nomination.
